I haven’t really changed my stance as far as the overall homeless issue goes. It’s a serious problem and it requires serious, thoughtful, humane solutions. I really wanted Rick Caruso to be mayor of Los Angeles because he appeared to have some of those solutions. But instead the leftist Karen Bass was elected so I doubt anything will change. 

It’s really bad in every big city I’ve been recently: LA, New York, San Francisco, even Austin Texas. You can’t walk down the street without folks lying at your feet. And they can be very threatening. 

I feel sorry for most of them. I want to see them helped. But it’s no good for anyone that they’re there. As a society we can do better.

Isn’t this kind of silly? It’s not like the marine was studying the dude’s rap sheet beforehand so what difference does any of this make? 

The point is the guy appeared threatening, and he said threatening things. That’s why the marine got involved. Whatever took place prior to this incident strikes me as irrelevant one way or the other.

I get accused of bringing up race a lot in these discussions. And I don’t shy away from that because I believe that we still live in a racist society, better than it was but not as good as it could be, and it’s important to point out when racism occurs. And I really don’t care who gets pissed off about that. 

However in this case, based on what has been reported, I don’t think race played a role. The homeless guy could have been white, brown, or purple and if he was threatening the same thing would have happened IMO.

1. According to what I’ve read, yes. There were plenty of witnesses. I don’t believe a stranger (the marine) would have done anything if he hadn’t been threatening. 
 

2. No of course not. But I don’t blame the marine for subduing him, and I can’t blame him for using a technique he knew how to do (the chokehold). Possibly he used it too long but that’s a judgment call. It’s not one that I feel comfortable making after the fact.

Yeah I can’t go this far. He doesn’t deserve to be dead. I don’t blame the Marine but you’re out of line here. It’s an unfortunate incident. I’m pretty sure the homeless guy was mentally ill. Stop acting like he’s some sort of villain.

This is a sad story all the way through. I think that under the circumstances the marine behaved appropriately. I admire him for subduing the guy. But I’m quite sure he had no intention to kill him and anybody who is celebrating this poor guy’s death really should take a look at the mirror. 
 

Mentally ill people shouldn’t be on subways and wandering the streets. They shouldn’t be hungry. They should be in hospitals being cared for. And yes those of us more fortunate should be taxed to pay for this. At least that’s the sort of society I want to live in.

it’s reported what happened and why 3 dudes subdued him.  The white dude had him in the reverse choke hold but a black dude and a Hispanic guy were helping.  There were witnesses on camera stating they were scared.  Do live under a rock?
