KSB2424 3,148 Posted June 28, 2023 It’s my family’s beach week at our condo in NC. All the beach flags are red, big time rip currents. My kids are at the coast all the time and I’ve drilled into their heads what to do if caught in a rip current. “Don’t panic, let it take you out, then swim parallel to the beach until out of the current, then swim back in”. Mallett was transported after the incident from a beach in Destin, Florida to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. How do ya drown in Florida's Gulf Coast? Of course, I had a surf board to paddle on and was too young and stupid to even notice anything. Though friends I used to surf with have all said the same. Guess the board makes all the difference. But that's east coast where people do frequently drown. The Gulf just looks like a giant lake with ripples. I don't know if there's rip tides or not, but I doubt it. Especially near the panhandle. Yes, quite a few people dieing in the gulf coast this year, just a few days ago there were people complaining about the number of drownings along the gulf coast. JustinCharge 2,397 Posted June 29, 2023 the coast guard said there were no riptides in the area. this happened in the afternoon. the rumor im hearing was that Mallet was with a group of 5-7 people who wanted to swim out to a second sandbar 150 feet further out to sea from the first one for fun. however, they couldnt find it and started to get tired from swimming. panic ensued, they all tried to make it back to shore but Mallet didnt make it and went under. A calm Gulf beach on a sunny afternoon... "oh no, I can't find the sandbar.... ahhhh!" At the very least ya float a while and catch your breath. Clearly Mallet wasn't much of a swimmer.
