**2023 British Open (Open Championship) Thread**

Recommended Posts

The British Open (or Open Championship) is now just a little more than a week away. Per my usual custom, here is my list of my top ten favorties and other possible contenders. Picks are subject to change a bit also depending on what happens during the next week or so, but probably not much. It's a return to Hoylake this year, and while that isn't one of my preferred courses on the rota, it should be an exciting tournament if the elements flare up. The British is tied with the Masters as my favorite major, so really looking forward to this year as always.

Top Ten:

1. Rory McIlroy- I know I'll get ripped for this pick, but all those knocks on the door have to eventually open it, right?

2. Tommy Fleetwood- Almost a co-favorite for me. I think Tommy is the verge of breaking through and he has played good golf this year no doubt.

3. Rickie Fowler- Impossible to ignore Rickie's transformation and I like him to contend at Hoylake as well. Was close at the US Open.

4. Scottie Scheffler- Can finish top-5 at a major right now with four days of his "B" game. Just seems to know how to score and get into the mix each and every time out.

5. Collin Morikawa- Was down on him for awhile, but recent form really looks good. Would not surprise if he contended on the back nine on Sunday.

6. Viktor Hovland- Again, you've got to consider all the guys who have been best at the majors so far this year. That list has Hovland near the top.

7. Brooks Koepka- Didn't like his overall demeanor at the US Open this year, but has played these kinds of courses a lot and should find his way into contention.

8. Cameron Smith- I usually don't like defending champions to do well in majors for whatever reason, but leaving Cam out of the top ten completely seems foolish.

9. Adam Scott- Going with two veterans to round out my top ten. Scott and Rose continue to push for a second major win and that push should result in good results.

10. Justin Rose- Ditto from above. Again, Rose and Scott both believe their careers would best be defined as multiple major winners. Don't sleep on either of them.

Obvious omission here is Jon Rahm. I just haven't liked his body language on the course of late and I think he's destined to finish outside the top ten...but, we shall see.

Guess time to make a pick: Scheffler……and bcoz it’s a major, Brooks as well.

Continue to count me out on Rory or Fleetwood - wake me up when they do something in a recent major.

This is a pool where everyone picks golfers from a tier.  Pick one from tier 1, two from tier 2, two from tier 3 and three from tier 4.  The golfers are ranked by their odds to win that tourney.  Scores are based on the best 5 golfers on your team.  My team is -8 after day 1.

Hit the 100% boost on DK.  HOV to win boosted to +4400.   He started well today and then just stumbled.   Still a chance I suppose.

Any guesses as to what the winning score will be?

Betting stops being fun when I'm not comfortable with the amount I can lose.  I usually place about five $1 bets every major.  My usual bet is $5 and I make about 10 of them each weekend during football season.

You aren't comfortable with losing $20 to win $2400?

Sometimes.  It depends on my confidence in the pick.  I'm not comfortable placing five or more $20 bets for one event.  That adds up pretty quick and next thing I know I'm adding more money to my account.  That's not fun for me.

I have about $400 in my account right now and I plan on making that last through the football season and beyond.  My largest bet will probably be $50.

Unlike Ed and me, you mustn’t have an addictive personality.

If I’m willing Tom lose 400 I find zero pleasure in making that excitement last. I’d find 2 beats and drop 200 a piece. That’s me tho.

I do but I hate losing money much more than I like winning.  As much as I like winning, that feeling goes away quick for me.  Losing that money eats at me and I hate it.  It has to be an amount I don't care about.

When I'm out in Vegas I place a lot more $50 and $100 bets on games btu that's vacation.

If I am making a 1 to 240 bet. $240 doesn't do it for me.  10 would have been the bet.  $2400 sounds nice.

From what little I know you, a $20 might even be your play.

Maybe not one that will go down in the ages, but an Open I totally enjoyed.... Even before his win, I would have put Harman on the RC team for sure. He's a left-handed K. Kisner.

Speaking of Harman, the dude went somehing like 36-36 on putts inside 5 feet and 14 for 15 on putts from 10 feet and in............ This is exactly why (imo) guys like Fleetwood, Cantlay and Schauffle will never win a major - they flat out don't have the putter and what it takes over 4 days to pull it off.
