Wifi vs Ethernet

Recommended Posts

I got unlazy and ran ethernet to all rooms . Getting damn near the 1GB I pay for now to all computers and video game consoles. Wifi I was gettiing around 50mb and would geting spotty and laggy. Wifi to TV's only and it's much improved. I know, I'm old and should've known this a long time ago. :banana:

You could have just upgraded your wifi.  You can get over 200mb over WiFi which is more than enough for regular use.

Good move, use a hard line whenever possible. Especially for gaming and streaming.

👍

But 900mb is better than 200mb

200Mbps is plenty for posting on fantasy forums all day long, especially when you're too busy looking up the definition of racism trying to outsmart everyone to have time to run cable.

Oh, do you mean "the traditional definition of racism"?  Or the real, actual definition?

My kid and I both have PS5s

My connection is wired, his is Wi-Fi (everything at my work desk is wired)

Couple weeks ago we had to update Fortnite.

Was like 12 gigs or something obscene. Mine took 30 minutes, his took over 3 hours.

This is the only instance.  Usually the once a month or so this happens, we'll just fire it up before going to bed, or run an Ethernet from the kitchen to the Xbox.  Otherwise it's not needed.

Yeah he's an idiot

Guy suggests upgrading to a router that has 200mb.  You can't buy a router that slow if you tired.  The router I had 10 years ago had 450mb per channel.

No I didn't.  I suggested he upgrade his wifi.  He's probably using his providers router with the built in WiFi on an old protocol, and that's why he was only getting 50mb.  If he went to a newer mesh wifi unit, he'd get a newer protocol with faster speeds than 50mb, up to 200 which generally more than enough for everyday use.

50mb    2005 called and they want their IT technician back.

I'm sure mesh wifi systems are great and their technology greatly improved from when they first came out.  [completely stupid to suggest that as a solution to get wifi speed up to 200mb tho ]

But, talk about lazy.  If you have a large house just put the router at the end where the cable comes in and a WAP at the other.  That's just one cable the length of the house in the attic. If you have a mega mansion just map it out like office buildings do.

What’s the best WiFi option if you don’t want to run cords all over your house?

Mesh router?

I don’t know sh1t about this stuff but basically 3,800 sq ft house where a couple rooms in the basement are only getting a so-so signal with a supposedly good router and 300mbps service (don’t gave the gigabyte availability in my area :( )

And your only variable is the router, not it's location or size of the house.

I'm with strike, main computer and home theatre are best hardwired.

But hey, I do have a question maybe you can help me out with.  Seriously.  I haven't built a computer for 10 years now which is wild because hardware didn't used to last that long. I think I've finally hit the technology bubble because I'm not able to process 4K plus video in H.265 coding.  I have to convert to H.264 first.  What's the minimum hardware specs for handling HVEC for video editing?  I skimped on my last computer because I wasn't into video much back then and didn't buy a video card, just used the on board CPU graphics:

Intel Core i7-3770K - Core i7 3rd Gen Ivy Bridge Quad-Core 3.5GHz (3.9GHz Turbo) LGA 1155 77W Intel HD Graphics 4000 Desktop Processor

A- With the CPU above is it possible to just add a video card to offload the HVEC processing to?  If so, what's the minimum spec card?  I've briefly read some people say you need the CPU to be capable of 4K HVEC too, if so:

B- What's the minimum spec CPU and GPU to handle the processing?

TIA

What daily activities do you need more than 200mb for?

Streaming 7 live football games at the same time on sunday ticket when 2 ps5's and 5tvs are going all pulling off wifi.

Get a mesh wifi system.  Google makes a good one.  I have a tp link deco system works great.

You turn off the Wi-Fi on your router since it's crap, hook up the mesh unit.  One plugs into the router, and then you put the other units around the house.

I have a 4500 sq foot house, have 6 units, which might be overkill, started with 3 but signal was weak in the hot tub and one of the bedrooms so I added 3 more.  Now I have full strength fast wifi everywhere, without having to worry about dragging around wires with devices.

I have FiOS gigabit but 300mb is probably fine for what you're doing and how many devices you have.  The bottleneck is probably the wifi, not the service speed
