The Young Turks: Gallup Polls Indicate America's Trust In Media At Historic Low

Recommended Posts

Americans' trust in media plummets to historic low: poll

American's trust in media has fallen to a historic low, according to new polling from Gallup.....Why it matters: Trust in media had previously dropped to 32% in 2016 before rebounding slightly. Those gains have essentially been wiped out, according to the poll.....Details: Only 32% of the population reports having "a great deal" or "a fair amount" of confidence that the media reports the news in a full, fair and accurate way....The only other time in recent history that trust has fallen to 32% was in 2016.

A record-high number of Americans (39%), say they don't trust the media at all. That number has steadily increased since 2018.....Be smart: Much of the sentiment dip is driven by Democrats and Independents, whose collective trust in media has plummeted 18 and 13 percentage points, respectively, from their 2018 peaks. Younger Democrats, in particular, tend to be much less trusting of the media, according to Gallup data....Republicans' trust in media is still near an all-time low.

Trust in media is so low that half of Americans now believe that news organizations deliberately mislead them

.....Half of Americans in a recent survey indicated they believe national news organizations intend to mislead, misinform or persuade the public to adopt a particular point of view through their reporting.....The survey, released Wednesday by Gallup and the Knight Foundation, goes beyond others that have shown a low level of trust in the media to the startling point where many believe there is an intent to deceive.....Asked whether they agreed with the statement that national news organizations do not intend to mislead, 50% said they disagreed. Only 25% agreed, the study found.

Similarly, 52% disagreed with a statement that disseminators of national news “care about the best interests of their readers, viewers and listeners,” the study found. It said 23% of respondents believed the journalists were acting in the public’s best interests.....“That was pretty striking for us,” said Sarah Fioroni, a consultant for Gallup. The findings showed a depth of distrust and bad feeling that go beyond the foundations and processes of journalism, she said.....

“Americans don’t seem to think that the national news organizations care about the overall impact of their reporting on the society,” .....In one small consolation, in both cases Americans had more trust in local news.....The ability of many people to instantly learn news from a device they hold in their hand, the rapid pace of the news cycle and an increased number of news sources would indicate that more Americans are on top of the news than ever before.....Like with many other studies, Knight and Gallup found Democrats trust news more than Republicans. Over the past five years, the level of distrust has particularly spiked among independents. Overall, 55% of respondents said there was a great deal of political bias in coverage, compared to 45% in 2017.

In a picture of how people get their news, 58% said online, 31% said television, 7% said radio and 3% mentioned printed newspapers or magazines.....For members of Gen Z, aged 18- to 25-years-old, 88% said they got their news online, the survey found....

Hamas’s Hospital Lie and the Laws of War

....The jihadists directly target civilians, which is a war crime. But they want to deny Israel the right of self-defense by claiming any incidental civilian casualties in Gaza are a crime.....At first the media took Hamas at its word: 500 dead from an Israeli strike. The BBC explained on air that the Israelis “said they are investigating, but it is hard to see what else this could be, really, given the size of the explosion, other than an Israeli airstrike, or several airstrikes.”...Headlines have since changed, but the world received the story essentially as Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D., Mich.) put it on Twitter: “Israel just bombed the Baptist Hospital killing 500 Palestinians (doctors, children, patients) just like that.” She also blamed Mr. Biden for not coercing Israel into a cease-fire, as Hamas would no doubt like to see.

We can now have confidence that the initial story was false. A White House National Security Council spokesman confirms that its “current assessment, based on analysis of overhead imagery, intercepts and open source information, is that Israel is not responsible for the explosion at the hospital in Gaza.” Israeli drone footage and an intercept of a call between Hamas members add to the evidence. “I am telling you this is the first time we see a missile like this falling, and so that’s why we are saying it belongs to Palestinian Islamic Jihad,” one Hamas member began.....“It’s from us?” the other answered....“It looks like it. They are saying that the shrapnel from the missile is local shrapnel and not like Israeli shrapnel.”

Hamas blamed the attack on Israel, but its story doesn’t add up. Any observer can now see the hospital is still standing. Instead, the parking lot outside has been hit, with much evidence of fire damage but not the impact crater typical of Israeli airstrikes. The signs point to a long-range rocket from Gaza that fell before using up its accelerant....Hamas may still call this a success: Its propaganda held up long enough to set the Middle East ablaze. An angry mob took to the Ramallah streets to protest Mahmoud Abbas, president of the Palestinian Authority, for not doing enough to help Hamas. A mob tried to storm the Israeli embassy in Jordan....Mr. Abbas and Jordan’s King Abdullah, who receives more than $1 billion in annual U.S. aid, canceled a meeting with Mr. Biden over the hospital blast. On Wednesday the U.S. intercepted two attack drones targeting an Iraqi air base where U.S. troops are located.

Multiple synchronized videos show a projectile, previously identified by Israeli officials as a Palestinian rocket, launching from Israel and detonating near the Israel-Gaza border.

The video shows a projectile streaking through the darkened skies over Gaza and exploding in the air. Seconds later, another explosion is seen on the ground....The footage has become a widely cited piece of evidence as Israeli and American officials have made the case that an errant Palestinian rocket malfunctioned in the sky, fell to the ground and caused a deadly explosion at Al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza City.....But a detailed visual analysis by The New York Times concludes that the video clip — taken from an Al Jazeera television camera livestreaming on the night of Oct. 17 — shows something else. The missile seen in the video is most likely not what caused the explosion at the hospital. It actually detonated in the sky roughly two miles away, The Times found, and is an unrelated aspect of the fighting that unfolded over the Israeli-Gaza border that night.

The Times’s finding does not answer what actually did cause the Al-Ahli Arab Hospital blast, or who is responsible. The contention by Israeli and American intelligence agencies that a failed Palestinian rocket launch is to blame remains plausible. But the Times analysis does cast doubt on one of the most publicized pieces of evidence that Israeli officials have used to make their case and complicates the straightforward narrative they have put forth.....

The Al Jazeera video footage was shared three times by the Israel Defense Forces on X, formerly known as Twitter. In the posts, the Israeli military identified the moving aerial object as a “rocket aimed at Israel” that “misfired and exploded” at nearly the same time as the Al-Ahli Arab Hospital blast. Spokesmen for the Israeli military also explicitly identified this munition as the misfired rocket that caused the explosion in interviews with CNN and the BBC on Oct. 18 and in an interview with India Today on Oct. 19.....Numerous media outlets have shown the video footage and several have cited it as evidence that a Palestinian rocket hit the hospital....But The Times concluded that the missile in the video was never near the hospital. It was launched from Israel, not Gaza, and appears to have exploded above the Israeli-Gaza border, at least two miles away from the hospital....

68 percent realize the news is nothing but corporate-government propaganda.

Why 32% still hasn't yet given up on the lack of impartiality in corporate is media is more concerning. How deliberately stubborn and clueless do you have to be?

I’m neither.

I am one of the 32% and I’m convinced I’m right and that the majority is wrong. Furthermore I think you and many others are being manipulated by folks who make money and gain power by attacking the media.

Maybe you'll trust Cenk's insight since he is of the left and has personal experience working in the MSM. It's only 6 minutes and his 2nd point in the OP is right on the money.

This is most likely the least shocking post in the history of this bored.

I don’t agree with him. I think he has strong motives to attack the media. I have no reason to doubt his poll numbers however.
I always found Cenk to be a likable, stand up guy, but I strongly disagree with his politics. I feel much the same way about you.

It shouldn’t be shocking for anyone. Have you ever allowed majority opinion to change your view?

Occasionally, when presented with enough evidence to make me reconsider my position.

It's rare, of course, because I'm almost always right about everything based on my initial observations.

Of course you should change your mind if evidence warrants it. Everybody should. But never simply because a majority disagrees with you.

Can't argue with that. There are plenty of times where the majority is wrong.

Yeah if you trust the folks that derive 70% of their ad revenue from big pharma, you’re a retard. It’s no surprise that totalitarianTim puts trust in these fascist bastards.

I like the effort of “totalitarianTim” but it’s too long to roll off the tongue well. Also highly inaccurate but who’s keeping track?

If you want to see the danger of rejecting the mainstream media look no further than the Middle East. In most Arab countries they simply don’t believe that Hamas attacked Israel. They believe Hamas did nothing wrong and that Israel is evil to attack Gaza. They are 100% sure that our media, controlled by Jews, is lying to us.

Nah. I don’t consider the opinion  of those backwards cave dwellers at all, about anything.  Not an apt comparison.

You’re arguing with someone who believes someone ineligible to purchase a firearm in Illinois can drive over the border to Indiana to purchase a firearm.

The reality is all media has an agenda usually to support a narrative of the government they are under.  Our media has become nothing but a mouthpiece of the establishment elitists to control the narrative and information available to the masses in order to control elections and promote fears and division to increase their power and wealth.  The media has ceased to be the protector of the people many decades ago.  Stanley Kubrick in his many films was well ahead of his time in his thinly veiled attacks on the corruption and evil of the corporate-government establishment and how technology is used to control and brainwash us.   For some reason you are a unicorn who is outside the establishment but yet worships at its alter.

Indiana’s gun laws are much weaker:

https://everytownresearch.org/rankings/state/indiana/

But the main point is that they have gun shows in which a person who would normally fail a background check can purchase a firearm in a private sale without any background check. Which is why all private sales should be forced to conduct background checks. And all firearms in this country should be registered.

Hey Tim! Since you are right on every topic, even when in the minority of a topic or issue, why have you not ran for a political office? With your knowledge and always correct on every topic, surely you could fix all the nations problems. I've never seen someone who's always right on everything do so little with that knowledge. Every dang topic you and almost always you alone are correct. It's almost Trumpish level of narcissistic behavior. Congrats 👏

I don't know what Tim does for a living, I've known him for months not years, but I always pegged him to be a willing cog in the wheel with an insider corporate/government job. A mouthpiece on behalf of the left-wing power structure machine.

To think of him as outside the establishment doesn't seem to jibe, he seems way more partial to the Pelosi left than the Bernie left.

ABC’s ‘biased’ coverage on Israel-Hamas conflict sparks ‘dozens of complaints’

....Sky News host Sharri Markson has criticised the ABC’s “biased” coverage on the Israeli-Hamas conflict....ABC’s latest 'Behind the News' tried to explain the Israel and Hamas war to primary and high school students....Ms Markson said there was only just “one mention of terrorism” in ABC’s coverage.....“That one-sided coverage has sparked dozens of complaints,” she said.
