I think it was more he realized that the perception was that he was no longer mentally fit (even though I am not sure that was the reality).

And has Trump ever in his life done anything that did not benefit him directly? No matter badly he continues to mentally deteriorate (and it is getting progressively worse) he will never voluntarily end his campaign for the good of this country.
