MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow claimed Monday that former President Trump's re-election pitch is that he will be a strongman leader who will end politics in the U.S. if given the chance.

"Donald Trump is not leading the Republican Party and leading the Republican field of candidates because of his youthful vigor or because of his eloquence. None of that is going on," Maddow told Jen Psaki, the former White House press secretary for President Biden and her current colleague at MSNBC.

Maddow argued that Trump is increasingly being honest about his dictatorial ambitions to his base.

"What he's offering is what he both inherently offers and now, more and more, explicitly offers, which is that ‘if you pick me, that’s the end of politics,'" Maddow said. 

The MSNBC anchor summarized the deal that American voters would get in the scenario that Trump wins the 2024 election and causes, in her view, the collapse of the American political system.

"You won't have to deal with politics anymore. You won't have to deal with contested elections. You won't have to deal with contests or divisions when it comes to power. You'll have a strongman leader, and I'll just do what I want. Won't that be a lot simpler?" Maddow said, paraphrasing Trump's re-election pitch.

I think Trump will be a terrible President if he wins, far worse than last time, because he won’t have the guardrails around him. Specifically he is determined to appoint people based on personal loyalty rather than competence. I believe Trump’s stated policies on the border, on trade, on Ukraine, on drilling, will all be awful for this country (and on Ukraine and our international commitments it may lead to decades of misery.) Add that to his apparent determination to punish his enemies and his indifference to the Constitution, and I see very troublesome  times ahead. 

I don’t, however, see an end to our form of democratic republic. And here Maddow and many others go overboard. They’re overstating the case. The case, IMO, is bad enough.

My oh my. Biden hires people based on everything but competency, and here you are projecting that on Trump. I will say that Trumps biggest issue was who he surrounded himself with, but if you think Biden is hiring the best and the brightest, I give you Kamala Harris. She’s a disaster.

Putting aside the drilling issue, it suggests that he intends to put a stop to migration from our southern border in a way that would violate existing laws protecting civil liberties and perhaps violate the Constitution. No doubt some of his supporters, and some here, approve of such thinking. For me it’s enough all by itself to reject him as a candidate.

I’m not going to get into the weeds on this stuff. Like all Presidents, some of Biden’s appointments have been great, others not so much. But he didn’t appoint them with personal loyalty as the main concern, like a mob boss would. Thats what Trump intends.
