There used to be an expression:  those who can't, teach.  The idea was that those who struggled physically understood the work that went into to achieving excellence better than those who were naturally physically gifted.  I guess that isn't true anymore.

Yes, playing football helps you become a better coach, which is why pretty much every coach was a former player on some level.

And that old expression meaning was that those that failed at a discipline had no other choice than to teach it.  Had nothing to do with physical talent.

It helps, but it’s not a requirement.  Overall I wouldn’t say we should be comparing against either the % of the total population or the % of players.  Probably somewhere in the middle.
