SUXBNME 1,503 Posted March 11, 2024 Nothing against Bird at all, but he prolly couldn't hack it in todays NBA. Give me Domantas Sabonis

Other than the general issue that athletes are always getting bigger/faster/stronger, so generational comparisons are difficult. He had a special combination of inside, outside, and passing skills. I had been in Boston in the late 80s so had nothing against him. In 1992 (looked it up) he moved to the Suns; we were dating and had both become Suns fans by now. She said, and I paraphrase: "there is no focking way I'm rooting for that piece of shiot Ainge$#@!" By halftime of the first game, she was rooting for him. We still talk about that whenever there is talk about the Suns acquiring some d1ckhead. You hate those guys... until they are on your team.

I think it was seinfeld that did a bit on rooting for a jersey and not a person. This fits that to a tee.

I used to go this bar, Parkway Tavern to watch games during the playoffs. The owner was originally from Boston. He loved everything about Boston, and LOVED his Celtics with a passion. Had many nights of some seriously fun drinking and trash talking. A few Wemens were Lakers fans and their effeminate mens. A few Pistons, Knicks, and me, da Bulls fan. So many great nights there. I stopped going there when I went to college. I went a couple of years later just to say hi and and buy a few rounds. When I sat down and ordered, the place was empty as it was early. I look and see this etching on the large mirror behind the bar. “I quit watching when Bird retired. 33 Forever.” I asked the bar maid if the owner was around? BM: He died a couple of years ago. You want another shot? Me: A Jameson. And a few years later, Magic and MJ retired. I’ve had zero interest since.

But even then, watching him become yhe best boundary WR in the league and loving his skills, I knew I'd hate his guts if he played for another team. Guy was a complete dbag on the field. Yeah, I hear ya. Possibly the most hated guy in AZ sports lore is Robert Horry, a cheap shot POS who hip checked Steve Nash into the scorer's table during a key playoff game with the Spurs, then Stoudemire got ejected the next game for taking two focking steps onto the court and stopping, and the Suns got eliminated. I wouldn't piss on that guy if he were on fire.
