Game 2 of the NBA Finals eked out an increase over the past two years and hit a five-year high.

Sunday’s Mavericks-Celtics NBA Finals Game 2 averaged 12.06 million viewers on ABC, per Nielsen fast-nationals — making it the most-watched Game 2 of the Finals since Warriors-Raptors in 2019 (13.89M). Ratings were not immediately available

The Celtics’ win, which peaked with 14.11 million in the 10 PM ET quarter-hour, increased 1% from both Heat-Nuggets last year (11.91M) and Celtics-Warriors in 2022 (11.91M).

It took last year’s Finals until the clinching Game 5 before any game hit the 12 million mark. The 2022 Finals, a higher-profile series that featured Stephen Curry and the Warriors, did not hit the 12 million mark until Game 4.

Game 2, which was close in the final minutes, increased 10% over Thursday’s Game 1. Notably, the Game 2 peak was not only later than in Game 1 — which peaked in the first half — it was higher by 16% (vs. 12.11M).

Overall, Game 2 tied the fifth-largest NBA audience since the league went on hiatus nearly four years ago — trailing Games 5 and 6 of the 2022 series, last year’s Game 5 clincher and the clinching Game 6 in 2021.

It should be noted that prior to the COVID hiatus, 12 million would have been considered low for the Finals. Every Finals game from 2008-19 averaged more viewers than Game 2.

Not at all. I can still laugh at the boston haters, not being able to see through their hatred.

I think the Celtics should trade Tatum for a kings ransom and re-sign Holliday and white.

I didn’t put a second of thought into that “prediction.”

You’d probably like basketball more if you watched it. At least your takes would be better. Trade Tatum? 😂

He is going to want a supermax. Brown has proven to be the better player, who already has a supermax.  Averaging 17 points in the NBA finals. Please show me one time ever in the history of history the "best player" on a NBA team averaged 17 points in the finals.

Tatum is 25 years old and arguably a Top 5 players in the NBA. But they should trade him because he’s averaged 17 PPG in the Finals, a sample size of 2.

Great plan Ed.

Edit: Btw, Brown got absolutely roasted for playing like trash in the ECF against Miami last year, many fans blaming him for the loss. This is why you don’t form an opinion based on a handful of games. And by “you” I mean smart NBA execs. Obviously you form your opinions based on whatever happened yesterday.

You think Boston should trade a 25-y/o All Star because he averaged 21.5 ppg in a Finals two years ago and hasn’t been great in 2 games this year. The Celtics should can Brad Steven’s and hire you to right the ship, Simple Jack. 🤤 😂

I am more excited the Red Sox beat the filthies and spankees this week (not that I watched). NBA sucks.

Should have been Holiday.

in the finals:

Jrue 14.8 ppg, 7.4, 3.8 apg

Jaylen Brown 20.8 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 5.0 apg

Both played great defense.

I'm happy, but more because I'm $575 richer thanks to a Fanduel bonus bet back in October for the Celts to win it all

1998 Finals.   Bulls vs Jazz.    36 Million viewers tuned in to watch Michael Jordan.

2020 NBA Finals, while most of the country was deemed "non essential" and told to stay in their home and watch TV,  drew only 7.4 million viewers.

Population had increased by 30%, but NBA had lost 80% of their viewers in that time.     Game 4 of the '24 Finals drew just over 9 million this year.

With its focus on China and progressive politics, the NBA has now relegated itself to a small niche, similar to badminton or frisebee golf.

Funny I don't recall Frisbee golf or badminton finals catching 9m viewers...
