Trump Proposes Major Tax Change For Workers Who Get Tips

Former President Donald Trump said Sunday that if he was reelected to the presidency in November, he wanted to change the tax code to exempt tip income from federal taxes, prompting loud cheers from a Las Vegas crowd.

Trump, who stopped in Sin City after a whirlwind tour of the west coast, told the audience that he wanted to push Congress to act, saying that he’d ask them to eliminate taxes for tips earned by restaurant and hospitality workers.
“So this is the first time I’ve said this, and for those hotel workers and people that get tips, you’re going to be very happy because when I get to office, we are going to not charge taxes on tips, on people making tips,” Trump said. “We’re not going to do it, and we’re going to do that right away, first thing in office because it’s been a point of contention for years and years and years — and you do a great job of service, you take care of people.”

“And I think it’s going to be something that is deserved — more importantly — popular or unpopular, I do some unpopular things too, if it’s right for the country, I do what’s right,” Trump continued. “But — so those people that have jobs in restaurants or whatever the job may be, a tipping job, we’re not going after it for taxes any more, that will be ended.”

“This is a long time Ron Paul proposal. His argument is that tips are gifts not wages. Always a crowd pleaser in Nevada,” Phil Kerpen pointed out.
“Tips are a financial thank you to show appreciation for good service and it makes sense they should not be taxed. That folks, is just one way to stimulate the economy & put $ back in the people’s pocket,” another noted.

Darn that evil OMB just helping his rich buddies get richer.

I think that’s a very good ideal, just imagine trump can be president from a jail cell. Oh the shame to America, I also think Churches and all related religion meeting places need to be taxed.   But a tip is indeed a gift, they don’t need to be taxed on that.

Thanks.

I'm not sure I agree with this one.  Have to think about it more but when the economics of the job dictate that the pay is split between an hourly rate/salary and tips, the tips are part of the compensation package and therefore should be taxed.  It'd be like saying an executives bonus isn't part of his base pay and therefore shouldn't be taxed.

If tips are not to be included as income, then restaurants and bars will need to pay at least minimum wage. That whole tipped employee minimum wage will go away. This  will have a lot better service in restaurants until the general public slowly catches on and starts tipping less in general. Then who knows. Because tipped jobs like waiting tables is a bltch overall. Can be flexible and fun but definitely has it's ups and downs on a daily/hourly basis.

This is interesting for sure.

Since you’re for this I assume you’re in favor of college loan forgiveness.

Dumb assumption. Taxpayers being required to pay off other people's loans is the same as people giving tips freely? 😆

"Trump to eliminate taxes on tips"

You mean he mentioned it in a long rambling incoherent speech where he talked about sharks and batteries and read a snake poem.

He also is going to repeal and replace Obamacare, build the wall, and pass an infrastructure bill in 2 weeks.

  • Thanks 2

Why would you be ok with just a subset of the country being positively impacted while the rest of us fund it.

Oh yea, you’re an idiot.

Who's funding what?

If I stupidly take out a loan that I can't pay back you are ok with the government telling you to pay it off for me? But if I give someone 10 bucks you want the government to get a share of it?

Liberals are so stupid.

Only CC tips are claimed. Just get rid of taxing tips cause many ghetto people tip like shlt anyway.

25% is a reach. I don’t think it’s close to that.

One thing maybe some of you don’t know. They raised minimum wage for servers here in taxachusetts. It is like 6 now instead of the 2.25 it was for 20 years

Well at actual busy places I worked, we got audited, because we actually made good money. We needed to claim all credit card tips or we could get screwed.

I'd bet at least 80% of tips are captured as income now since almost all come on credit cards.

What a pandering, unthinking jackass your master is.

Dumb as the day is long.

You think people tip on credit cards at bars and fast food type places?

Lets pretend it is 80%. What is the IRS and your master doing now to collect it? 🦗

So it doesn't just benefit a subset of people?

So it doesn't result in an increased deficit for the country?

I know no one is as smart as you Jerry with your 50 patents but this is very much like loan forgiveness.

Pandering to one group of people by absolving them of their responsibilities and shifting the burden to the rest of us.

Explain how that's wrong Mr. Genius.  You do consider yourself the smartest person in the room.

Not only let illegals work UTT, also bypassing the owners from paying taxes on that as well.

Guy I know that runs a sub shop in town, pays everyone up to 40 hours and all overtime in cash

Of course.  What percentage of people do you think carry cash?  Let alone tip in cash?

They collect it by servers declaring it.  They declare it because there's a paper trail.

Why is this confusing to you?

Nice to see him prioritizing this instead of offering up ideas on immigration, inflation, the national debt, energy, foreign policy and other insignificant issues.

I accept your surrender.  I laid out several salient points that you can't possible dispute so you deflect and run away like always.

Odd behavior for the self proclaimed smartest guy in the room with 50 patents.  The dude who just had to tells us how many patents he had because he's so uber secure with himself...

LMFAO

Why just this subset of people?

The federal government wouldn't have money for moon landings, Holocaust museums and nuclear testing if income taxes were eliminated.

For that reason, I think this idea sounds great in theory but is unworkable in practice as it would involve an overhaul of compensation in the hospitality industry.

Your false equivalency is stupid.  Every tax other than a pure flat tax targets one group over another.  From that you conclude we should forgive student loans.  Jeebus.
