CNN doing everything they can to block the debate fairuse

Recommended Posts

I will likely watch some of the debate on CNN. I dont know how these youtube channels work, in regard to would they pull viewers from the CNN broadcast, and therefore hurt their numbers. why is this a problem for you?

no CNN gains viewers, because they would be embedding the live stream from CNN, meaning their add revenue climbs by more viewership

How much of someone else's work can I use without getting permission?

Under the fair use doctrine of the U.S. copyright statute, it is permissible to use limited portions of a work including quotes, for purposes such as commentary, criticism, news reporting, and scholarly reports. There are no legal rules permitting the use of a specific number of words, a certain number of musical notes, or percentage of a work. Whether a particular use qualifies as fair use depends on all the circumstances. See, Fair Use Index, and Circular 21, Reproductions of Copyrighted Works by Educators and Librarians.

I read the article as CNN was trying to block other sites livestreaming the debate and commenting while it was happening.   That doesn't fall under what you just posted.  At all.

So under the fair use, I can live stream a NFL game on my platform and monetize that streaming?  That's legal?

First paragraph:

On Monday night's episode of Timcast, host Tim Pool revealed that CNN, which is hosting the first presidential debate of the general election season on Thursday, has warned any YouTube channels that intend to live stream the debate while providing commentary for viewers that this would not be permitted under copyright. The debate will be hosted by Jake Tapper.

Raiders is now an expert on Fair Use.

I work in video production and anytime we come close to a Fair Use issue, we are on the phone with an attorney to make sure we are in the clear.  I have some experience with this, but live streaming someone else's content and talking over it, doesn't seem to clear the normal Fair Use bars.

The big takeaway as I understand Fair Use is to use something in a transformative way.

For instance, if I host a YT show on editing techniques and grab a 30 second of Heat diner scene to explain the wide shot, cutting, j and l cutting---that would fall under fair use.  I'm not monetizing the movie by showing the movie, I'm making money based on teaching people editing techniques and I'm using the clip to educate how those techniques are used in practice. If you watch Honest Movie Trailers, they use clips of movies and but they are making their money by making parodies of movies and movie trailers.  IMO---videos like that are the ones that are going right up to the line on the fair use laws...

Showing a debate and offering commentary isn't a enough---you aren't transforming the show into something else.

not saying I am an expert, I am saying I have been watching debates with other people streaming over with commentary since live streaming has been a thing

also not allowing this is racist cause poor black people don't know how to use the internet and its not on tv's with antennas which is all the blacks have

Sure seems, you were claiming some knowledge here of how it works.  And just because you saw it happen-doesn't mean it's legal.

And playing the race card..

🤣

I am just using the democrat playbook, if Fox was doing this, that would be the narrative

I am not claiming knowledge, just sharing an article, and knowing how I have watched every single presidential debate since 2012

I figured, raiders posted it. :D The story though seems fine, mostly a here is what Tim Pool said article. Unlike most geeks, I can read an article with a timeline or series of quotes and can pick out the pertinent points even if its from a biased source. Our righty geeks cant have their safe space encrouched upon. @Voltaire just a few days ago questioned that Magas had a beef w TSwift, I shared a Rolling Stone article that covered the timeline. He could only whine about RS being biased..real snowflake stuff.

Raiders is just your standard trumptard that wants to whine and cry about CNN and claim that they’re somehow shadowy and maybe it’s all some big conspiracy to silence his fellow trumptard podcasters and such

I feel like it would be very distracting watching the debates with commentary over it. fact check after and discuss your opinions, but over it while its going on, just seems like its more leading propaganda

It sounded like Fox had the similar copyright objections then changed their mind at some point. Watching the debate commentary after you have watched it without commentary seems useful.

Tim Pool isn't as smart as he thinks he is and even with that he still is smarter than Raiders so Pool is worshipped in this instance

Wow..gee..You would think that might be why CNN copyrighted it.   To get people to possibly GET CNN if they really wanted to watch the debate.  Over letting some schmo livestream it on youtube.

Damn capitalists!!

I do not give CNN views. I will be able to find clips of it online. CNN only has one schtick. White people are bad. All day every day.

Sort of like ManningCast on MNF....

ETA: only on the distracting part.  Not sure they're adding any propaganda on the NFL content
