McCaffrey Hurt Today

Recommended Posts

Calf injury and will not play this preseason. Aiyuk replacement Ricky Pearsall left practice injured as well.

Shaping up to be the dreaded Super Bowl loser syndrome. McCaffrey in my mind is a real risk at his number one adp. Lot of wear on those tires.

Hope he's healthy enough by draft day for one of my competitors to risk an early pick on him.  I sure as hell won't.

Coaches excuse to limit McCaffrey without catching flack from the media/fans.

Seems in recent years... fewer and fewer starters are playing pre-season games. It all started with the Rams hiring Sean McVay who hated his starters playing pre-season games and proved they could just roll into the season ready to go. Most teams are starting to follow suit.

Doubt coaches or starters get much out of it anyway. Can't blame them.

Especially veteran RBs. Why play them at all in pre-season?

There's a good chance that's what's happening.

Although a calf injury like this concerns me when it comes to a guy with a heavy workload the past couple of seasons.

That could be the precursor to an Achilles tear...

I hadn’t been considering McCaffrey at all until I recently landed the #1 pick in a new league.  Last year he handled 339 total touches.  329 in 2022.  Prior to that he eclipsed 300 touches in 2019 with a whopping 403, and we all know how 2020-2021 went.  He’s now 28 with a lot of mileage the past two years.  It has me concerned, especially with this injury.  Not the slam dunk at #1 I thought he was a week ago.  I think you have to consider Bijan, Hill, “insert your favorite here” etc. if you have the #1 pick.

Calf injury was the excuse they used to keep him out of Week 18 last year.  It's the only time he's "ever had one".  I'm not concerned.

Be interesting to see analysis of how Rbs fair after 650+ touches over two years. I have a sneaky suspicion it ain't good. The recent two that come to mind...

McCaffrey himself totaled 731 touches in '18 and '19...  missed 13 games in '20.

Derrick Henry totaled 718 touches in '19 and '20.... missed 9 games in '21.

Last time McCaffrey had back to back seasons with 300 plus touches was 2018&19, he played in only 3 games in 2020.

Last year David Montgomery was on a roll when he injured his calf. I didn’t think it was a big deal at the time but his production dropped off significantly. Love MCM but buyer beware

David Montgomery?  You're sure?  His first 2 games were fine, 13+ and 12+, then he got hurt (reported as a thigh bruise).  He missed 1 game and had 2 big weeks, then hurt again (reported as a rib bruise), then the rest of the year was fairly consistent with his first 2 games.

His week ten game was real good, I played against the person that owned him in ff last season, that person benched him, uncertain of how he might fair.

No. He was my #1 rb and suffered several injuries along the way. After a thigh injury, you’re correct it wasn’t the calf, he was no where near a number one rb from week 6-13. Check his stats. I know because he killed me late I’m the year.

Week 6 was the week he got hurt and missed the next 2, then had a bye week.  His next 4 games were 17.6, 17.8, 15.1, and 12.5.  Obviously if a guy is out he's not going to help you, but those last 4 weeks?  Averaging 15.75 fpg shouldn't "kill" you.  Last year, Mixon was RB11 averaging 15.7 fpg. :dunno:

Well he didn’t play week three due to a thigh injury which he sustained in week two that hurt his productivity but I guess we’ll ignore that.

Move on

Agreed that those averages shouldn’t kill you.  But I don’t think I want to live with that kind of doubt with the #1 pick….thats all I’m saying.

If I get the #1 pick - Tyreek Hill.  McCaff would have to fall to 5th. Hall and Bijan even later. Which ain't happening in any draft in the world.

Early draft capital is too valuable to bet on bit-coin. Might pay off, but it's a risky investment.

Don’t believe he was talking about the #1 pick,   He was talking about D Montgomery

Yes, sorry about the confusion there.  He was using Montgomery as an example.  I was simply saying I’d rather not use that pick on any player with potential red flags even if they may be minor red flags.

I wasn't doing that either.  My original point was that the Niners are using calf injury as an excuse to keep McCaffrey out or preseason nonsense without catching flack.  They did that last year too, in Week 18, in a meaningless game.  McCaffrey has never had a calf injury that lead to missing games in his career.

Then, @wolves111 said that a calf injury is what derailed Montgomery's season.  Montgomery never had a calf injury and then he [wolves111], went on some weird tangent.

In 7 seasons, McCaffrey has missed games due to injury in only 2 of them.  This "calf injury" doesn't concern me.  That's my point.
