But I will miss my chance to make the news as the jackass who got himself gored and stomped. Yeah, not oplanning on petting bison or feeding marshmellows to grizzlies. Also, I plan to stay on the paths. I do have a fresh knee replacement so I probably don't want to hike any futher than 2 miles at a time. That will limit my visit but maybe next year i can hit what I miss on essentially a car tour this year with just a bit of walking thrown in.

Do day trips to the park, drive the loop and see what you want to see. Then go back to Jackson and take a boat across Jenny lake and hike the Tetons instead. It's been decades since I've been there so maybe it's changed, but, you have to go to Yellowstone to say you've been and it is gorgeous. But, the Tetons are way more intense to me in the summer with lots of beautiful hiking and fishing with a lot less people. Glacier is the most amazing park in the country though, despite all the people, imo. Tons of fishing the rivers, whitefish and flathead lake.
seafoam1 2,802 Posted August 20, 2024 Just go there and learn how to do it yourself. That's how you learn things. You will find things you like and dislike and find things that others haven't. Just because some lliberal online says to vote for the kameltoe doesn't mean it's a good thing.

I have been all around the west hunting, fishing, and rafting but I thought I should visit Yellowstone proper one time and glcier proper one time. Maybe also a return to Yosemite as I was 4 when I visited there and certainly would have a different perspective 61 years later. There are some things I want to do in my retirement before I am unable. I have Ankor Wat and Machu Picchu on the list as well. Also I have never been to New Zealand and would like to get there. Nice, same. We're going to give up the Caribbean for a while and start doing Europe then Thailand.
IGotWorms 4,057 Posted August 20, 2024 Must sees: - grand prismatic - upper geyser basin (do the whole boardwalk loop) - lower geyser basin (awesome in the evening) - mud volcano area - Lamar valley - west thumb geyser basin - artist point Tips: - go to the main sights early in the morning or late afternoon/evening to avoid crowds (grand prismatic, upper geyser, artist point especially) — may not be as critical if you’re going in September - three or four days probably sufficient if you pack em with sightseeing - trout lake and storm point were my two favorite hikes we did there, and not too difficult Can’t say much on where to stay. We had campgrounds reserved, but I think you’re gotta do that way in advance if you want to stay in the park. Otherwise probably gotta look for places right outside the park

Gotta hike out to Taggart Lake but it’s easy

JuneJuly 193 Posted August 20, 2024 I was at glacier maybe 5 or 6 years ago and the amount of people was unreal. Parking lots packed at the top, but the beauty was still breath taking. I go and find a nice fishing spot shaded by an overpass and within minutes two jabronies stomp out in waders 50 yards downstream and scare away all the fish. They throw out flies for 10 minutes and leave. I'm afraid parks can't be enjoyed anymore like they used to be.

If you PM me an e-mail address, I can send you detailed recommendations that I sent to my mom and stepdad when they went several years ago. It's an incredible place, but planning is a good thing to maximize the experience.

Still, we work with what we have. There is still solitude and wide open spaces in Alaska and Canada.
thegeneral 2,910 Posted August 20, 2024 I worked there for the summer in college so been awhile and I’m sure much has changed… But if you like hiking pick the area that you are interested in and once you get a mile in trails are empty. If you stay in the park personally remember Lake Hotel being less crazy than the Old Faithful one and Yellowstone Lake is a nice setting. A few days could easily be filled as the variety in the park is wild and all interesting in its own right. Outside of the park I agree Jackson is prettier and a better town to visit than the ones up North and East and West entrances. Nothing to offer on what it’s like getting into the park these days or if there are limits on how many peeps they let in, def look into all that.
