The economy is fine, stupid.

Walgreens is closing approximately 1,200 stores across the United States as the pharmacy chain struggles with slumping consumer spending.

Unpossible.   We have been assured that the economy is just fine.

Its a shame. I can't think of a better symbol at the moment to represent poor blue inner cities than Walgreens. We'll other than graffiti, homeless, drugs and chit on the street.

We have 1 Walgreens in my city and I think 4 or 5 CVS'

We have 3 dunkin donuts, 1 starbucks, 1 mcds, 1 dominoes.  I think that is all for 'fast food'

For the past 20 years it seemed like a Walgreens and a CVS was going up on every corner of America.  Looks like that wasn't the smartest plan.

So much easier to buy this stuff online.

Without reading the article, I can make a good guess on where most of these stores are located. Definitely the ones that have products behind locked cabinets.

This is probably true.

There is one of these in a bougie outdoor mall near my place. Place always looks like it is about to close out, shelves empty, one checker. The Red Lobster of drug stores.

& amazing you didn't mention covid as the reason.

nice job

Amazing that the Biden-Harris America gets blamed for closures attributed to people going online instead. Amazing that people politicize fundamental economics that have nothing to do with who is president. Amazing that Red Lobster and Walgreens get singled out as economic failures while those who do so turn a blind eye to the record-setting stock market, low unemployment and other positive economic indicators.

Truelly amzing!

It must be a bad economy and not competition from other various places(price clubs, online...).

Businesses always close during a booming economy :dunno:

Seriously.  If i need toothpaste, why get in my car, drive to Walgreens, wait in line, deal with "the public" when I can just go click, click, click and it's on my porch tomorrow.

Not always. but it does happen if they can't stay competitive or make bad business decisions.

They opened in 1901, I am sure they had no idea how to run a business.

When your kid needs medicine or aspirin or anything of that nature. waiting till tomorrow is a solid plan.

Then they should rebrand as Pharmacy only.  The Target's around me have CVS and Walgreen's pharmacies in them as a subsection.  They don't need a whole store.

F.W. Woolworth and Sears had been in business about that long too but Woolworth stores have been shuttered and Sears is down to 9 locations in the US.

Saw this on the Twitters, but have not verified the truth of the claims:

Quote

Walgreens just wrote down 3 billion on a bad clinical investment and got lapped in its core px business...

Sears was pretty famously mismanaged too leading to its demise. It's a shame that people are so beholden to businesses anymore that a business declining has to be the politician's fault and not the fault of bad management.

There is a certain % of the country who blame all their troubles "on someone else" and want to vote for a guy who "blames all his troubles on someone else".

It's a sickness.

LOL article date, October 22, 2020.  What a maroon

Right, because Trump still was president at the time. I could post dozens of links regarding all the businesses that closed under Trump pre-COVID, and you'd still turn a blind eye to supply-and-demand economics and only focus on the negative aspects of today's economy because it makes you feel all warm and toasty inside.

Businesses rise and fall regardless of who is president, thanks to consumer trends and management.

Of course Subway locations were going to close due to overpopulation, the inability to find employees in this economy, the lingering effects of their greatest spokesman being a pedophile and crapass sandwiches.

But go ahead and blame it all on a president!

Aspirin?  Who buys Aspirin?

I buy everything in bulk online so you don't need to run out for something very often.  Once or twice a year.

They are only good for prescriptions.

And again- Walmart has a pharmacy. Target has a pharmacy. Costco has a pharmacy. Wegmans does. Hell Giant does. I can go into Giant, give them my refill stuff, go grocery shopping, and grab my script on the way out.

Long gone are the days of "Go to Walgreens, drive a half a mile down the road through traffic to go grocery shopping. Drive a half mile back and cut across traffic to grab my script." Americans want convenience and the system has given us that. Unfortunately a byproduct of that is some places becoming relics.

I can grab an Aspirin, a 6 pack of beer, some beef jerky and some Pepto Bismo at the gas station a block from my house.   Why do I need a Walgreens?

Exactly....and that gas station might at some point give way to the Walmart that will open another mile down the road which allows you to do all that as well without feeling like you might need to be hyper cognizant of your surroundings.

I have Walmart a Mile down the road. I rarely go.  I'll pay a extra buck to go to the Target next door.   Walmart people (shudders).

Target could've been used in my example as well.

From my house- Walmart is a 5 minute drive. Target is a ~12 minute drive....I'll take the 5 minute drive even if Target is a nicer store in general.

Fair enough. The Walmart near me is Gross.  The Target is at least clean. But every store will vary.
