Muhammad Ali - What am I missing?

Recommended Posts

I thought it was crappy in his later years when he opened an ice cream parlor but turned out he only sold shakes.

Wisely?

I wouldn't call someone who dodged the draft with a falsified medical condition (like bone spurs) wise. That is not to be praised or admired.

You also have no understanding of any nuance.

Bone spurs are often caused from joint damage. I have a friend who has joint damage and when he tried to join the military years ago they at first accepted him (the recruiter hid his condition so he could get credit) and then later found he had joint damage and they kicked him out of the military because of it.

Do you simply just love being this dumb? And oh, "Ali is a hero for dodging the draft". 😆

Was a good dude out of the ring as well. Save a dude from jumping off a building and got hostages out of Iraq, Death is right about the feeling you got about his and all those other heavyweight fights back in the 70's and 80's! just sold my Auto pic of Ali last month on Ebay.

Wow, this thread really took a turn---shocker.

Pre-suspension Ali was a heavy-weight with the defense and reflexes of a middleweight. Watching his early fights are great just to see him dodging punches nearly as they thrown. He was so impossibly fast and guys would just completely whiff and leave themselves totally defenseless to his counters. His left jab was incredibly accurate and the overhand right was deceptively powerful. Also you can't forget about his stamina, he looked fresh even in the late rounds. IMO, pre-suspension Ali might have been about as perfect of a fighter as you could put together.

After the suspension though is when he fought some some wars and maybe the deepest heavyweight era of all-time, Frazier, Norton and Foreman, Quarry, Shavers and Patterson.  Except for Quarry, all those guys won at least one championship belt.  He wasn't the same fighter physically after the layoff, but he was still a brilliant tactician, and he just had so much will power to keep fighting.  And yeah, it took it's toll on him as seen in his later years, it was tough to see him like that.

Based on the pre-suspension dominance of his early career and then the post-suspension comeback where he beat so many great fighters and beat them all(until the very end) I have him ranked as the best ever.

Not interested in thr political banter.  But this basically.   But at least in my opinion hes probably not best ever.  Boxing goes back a ways and many different eras so arguing whos the best is rather tough.  Hes up there but not the best.

He may have been as great as the hype.  I'll never know.  One thing I know is the media latches on to narratives and the public gets programmed by it and repeats it.  I mean look at all the people in here espousing the greatness of a guy that retired before they were old enough to even watch him in real time.

So I have no idea if Ali's greatness was a media creation or was based in pure substance.  I'm sure it was somewhere in the middle.

Ricky Hatton, I cracked up.

My era was basically Mayweather.  I still follow boxing but was more about it in my youth.

Mayweather, Manny, old man Hopkins, Klitchkos was basically my era.  Im old enough to watch Rory Jones get knocked out by Tarver live.  Only experienced the tail end of his prime.

Of course I grew up rooting against Mayweather.   In time I have learned to appreciate his career more than I used to.

I would recommend the book Muhammad Ali: His Life and Times by Thomas Hauser. Available on Kindle. One of the best and most fascinating biographies I’ve ever read.

I read it in college. Very long and it was a fascinating biography.

Billy Crystal did a great impression of him.Billy was invited to be a guest at a fund raiser if I remember it right.  He and Crystal were sitting at a table and Ali leaned over and they whispered something. Ali bends backward and says “did you just call me a nigg…?”  Crystal was mortified. He was stuttering and saying he did not. Of course he didn’t. People are now gathering around them wondering what and why it happened. Then Ali starts laughing and gave him a hug. And said something along the lines of, just kidding. Everybody laughed and Crystal couldn’t laugh. Just pure relief.

Ali was an entertainer in an entertainment industry. The difference between him and someone like DeNiro is Ali was about the his job as an entertainer where DeNiro was a self proclaimed politico activist because he was popular as an entertainer.

Because he wasn’t part of the decision making that got us involved in the Vietnam War.

The fact that you support Trump's decision to do this speaks volumes about you and where you are coming from.

I hope so. I am terrified of war and don’t want to die. That being said, I would have enlisted in the Civil War and World War II, because both involved issues I believed in. And if this country is ever attacked, toss me a rifle. But the Vietnam War didn’t involve any of those things. It was a pointless, awful struggle and just like Afghanistan in the end we gained absolutely nothing. I detest Donald Trump generally but in this specific case I support his decision and would have done the same.

Ali was against interracial marriage and believed those that were in one should be lynched.

You're a 70 year old hippie virgin that trolls for dudes on the internet.  You couldn't/wouldn't fight if your life depended on it. You look up sissy in the dictionary and there's your photo.
