Google says Gulf of Mexico will change to Gulf of America in Maps app:

USA Today

"We've received a few questions about naming within Google Maps," the company said on X Monday. "We have a longstanding practice of applying name changes when they have been updated in official government sources."

"For geographic features in the U.S., this is when Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is updated," the company said. "When that happens, we will update Google Maps in the U.S. quickly to show Mount McKinley and Gulf of America."

"Also longstanding practice: When official names vary between countries, Maps users see their official local name," Google said. "Everyone in the rest of the world sees both names. That applies here too."

You know who really has to be jazzed about this change-geography textbook makers.

This has to be one of the dumbest things I've ever heard of.  Of course there is a grift involved.

Of all the things our country needs to work on, this is not it.  Feels like more of a joke than anything.

Google can change the name of the Gulf of Mexico on their maps all they want, they're Google's maps...

But it's still the Gulf of Mexico😀

Similar to a man that "identifies" as a woman.  He's still a man.

Are there still such things as textbooks?  If so that makes me happy and nostalgic.

I find it odd that the communist regime known as Google, would do this.  My guess is to keep adding fuel to the liberal fire that burns and destroys our country.

I miss the old place names even when new names may be better.  I miss Ceylon even though Sri Lanka sounds much cooler.  Same with Bombay as Mumbai rocks.  As for these two new changes, well the new names, or in the case of Mckinley the returning name just don't sing.  They are not zazzy.  I propose the Gulf of drowned Cubans who tried to escape Castro, and Mt. We will not recover your frozen bodies until springtime your dilettante mt. clinbers.  The names are a bit long, perhaps, but they have a certain undeniable appeal.

Oh noes, The Netherlands might laugh at us$#@!  You just don't get it.

The world was laughing at us when paid a shiot-ton of money for NATO, WHO, Green New Deal, and apologized for not paying more.

Now they see that the era of them being second-hander leaches on our dime is coming to an end.

Any one rando citizen of these worthless countries may laugh, because their government has lied to them and convinced them that their country is relevant.

But I assure you, the leadership of these countries is not laughing.

One can argue the relative value of the changes, but the message is clear:  For McKinley, no more apologizing for our manifest destiny.  For the Gulf of America:  Speaking of manifest destiny, we've got more coastline and do way more with this water, so let's just take that name as well.

My last name is Slovakian.  Only, when I was growing up, it was from the Slovak section of Czechoslovakia.  And before I was born, I think it was like it is today, with separate Czech Republic and Slovakia.

I don't even know who I am any more.

No, the world has thanked us for our partnership and our leadership when it comes to NATO, the WHO, etc.  This narrative that the world laughs at us for our aid was made up by Trump.  It's hilarious that you believe this.  Have you ever talked to anyone around the world?  Traveled?  NATO countries have been grateful for our strong military.  They don't laugh at us for that. 🤣🤣🤣

World leaders are laughing at Trump specifically for his childish ego driven policies.  They are however concerned that the US will no longer be a player in international affairs.  China, Russia, Brazil, India and other BRICS countries will look to fill that void.

And you're fully drinking the Kool Aid.  You're actually defending the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Your opening paragraph is laughable.  In the past 18 months I've been to Scotland, England, Italy, Canada, 5-6 weeks total... where have you traveled?

How long does it take to swap a name? It's the simplest of simple program changes.Change a universal variable reference then create a transport and add that change number to the list of production pushes.

Does it? Who really cares? Countries, cities and names change periodically but I don't ever see the left losing their s*** when that happens.

For Christ's sakes, Mumbai in India used to be called Bombay but no liberal here was complaining about that.

It's only when Trump suggests it that suddenly it's a big deal.

I believe the point of it was Trump wanted to hit a round number of EO's he wass going to issue.  He was just a bit short of his desired round number so he went right past the low hanging fruit to the fruit rotting on the ground.  It was an easy EO to fashion.

That's a lot of traveling for a person who works from home for medical reasons... and for a person who didn't provide this laundry list of countries the first time I asked. :dunno:

Well, we all know liberals have to support because they support the changing of boys names to girls names. :dunno:

And it's a world stage thing. And an educational thing. If it's no big deal then why care?

I like it.

Wait, is this some unadvertised feature of a Viking river boat cruise I have not heard about?  Sounds interesting.

I find this to be different than renaming a city.  I don't really care that much but I still find it kind of dumb.

1) It's an international body of water, we don't own it.

2) Bombay was renamed Mumbai after they took back control from the British so there was a symbolic meaning

3) Trump did this for his ego only.

That was an optional excursion.  I was interested in paying to rape some of the local women, but my wife wanted to go see how they make cheese instead.

I've been married long enough to know when to pick my battles.

The city is within the country.  That city belongs to the country.  The Gulf does not belong to us.  Regardless, what's the point of doing it?  I feel like Trump is doing it to piss off people and pander to his base.  Not really something I want my President to be doing.
