When you start that I know you're just making stuff up again. “Virtually all economists think that the impact of the tariffs will be very bad for America and for the world,” said Joseph Stiglitz, an economics professor at Columbia University and a winner of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. “They will almost surely be inflationary.” https://tcf.org/content/commentary/economists-agree-trump-is-wrong-on-tariffs/ Economists have long known that tariffs on imports not only reduce the demand for imports, they also discourage exports. This effect arises because as more domestic resources are used to produce goods that were previously imported, those resources are drawn away from export industries. https://www.piie.com/blogs/realtime-economics/2024/what-populists-dont-understand-about-tariffs-economists-do Economists across the political spectrum oppose these ideas, saying the most likely outcome would be higher prices for consumers. Here’s a look at how tariffs work and why they’re so critical in an election in which living costs are front and center. https://www.nbcnews.com/business/economy/tariffs-economists-dont-rcna176164 Why do most economists think tariffs are a bad idea? https://www.afhwm.co.uk/news/why-do-most-economists-think-tariffs-are-a-bad-idea/ Are tariffs bad for growth? Yes, say five decades of data from 150 countries https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7255316/ Leading American and Chinese economists answer one question: name one way the U.S.-China trade war has affected the American economy and global trade over the past two years. Despite the signing of a phase-one deal on January 15, until all tariffs are lifted many of these adverse impacts will continue. https://www.ncuscr.org/podcast/economists-explain-trade-war/ Thus, tariffs result in less efficient production, leading to reduced economic output and lower incomes over the long run. This is the standard analysis of tariffs going back to Adam Smith and the classical economists, who recommended keeping tariffs as low as possible (tariffs were a primary source of government revenue at the time). https://taxfoundation.org/blog/trump-tariffs-impact-economy/

Jobs are more influential on inflation than tariffs are. Don't get me wrong, I love job creation. But just note that high employment has some teeth when it comes to rising inflation. That was my take-away from college economics. They create production inefficiencies and leave everyone - nations and consumers, poorer. I wondered if Trump was just threatening tariffs as a diplomatic bargaining chip, but wouldn't actually employ them unless necessary. Guess not. I'd like to believe Trump knows what he's doing and it'll be good for America, but yeah... we know that ain't right.

It is a big deal, but it didn't happen because of tariffs. 1) Trump never announced any tariffs on Taiwan. 2) TSMC already began a huge investment in US manufacturing in 2022 thanks to incentives by Biden's Chip Act. This current investment builds on that.
