SpaceX US threatens to shut off Starlink if Ukraine won't sign minerals deal, sources tell Reuters

Recommended Posts

Damn right!!! Good luck without American munitions, GPS for them and Internet. 🏆 💪 🇺🇸

The United States has threatened to cut off Ukraine's access to Starlink satellite internet terminals if Kyiv does not reach a deal with the U.S. regarding critical mineral resources, Reuters reported on Feb. 21, citing three sources familiar with the negotiations.

U.S. and Ukrainian officials are currently negotiating the terms of a revised minerals deal after President Volodymyr Zelensky refused to sign an initial proposal. U.S. President Donald Trump said earlier on Feb. 21 that the parties are "pretty close" to an agreement.

U.S. negotiators have warned that Ukraine would lose access to Starlink terminals, owned by billionaire Elon Musk's company SpaceX, if Kyiv did not sign the deal, sources told Reuters.

Starlink internet terminals have played a crucial role in securing communications in the war in Ukraine. Last year, Ukraine said that approximately 42,000 terminals were in operation across the military, hospitals, businesses, and aid organizations.

This is outrageous. To coerce Ukraine to sign over its natural resources, Elon Musk is threatening to cut off Starlink. I guess the appropriate response from the EU would be to ban sale of Tesla’s if he does that.

Did you know that the money Europe has given Ukraine is in the form of a loan?. Ours is just a gift.

That stops under Trump. We'll own Ukraine before this war is over.

How are we going to extricate these resources (which, BTW, Russia also covets)? Are we going to have American engineers and workers over there? Who will guarantee their safety?

Up to this point we were simply aiding a small country invaded by a big country with money and arms, but we weren’t ourselves involved. Now we’re becoming involved long term. If this goes through there will be an American presence in Ukraine. Are we sure this is what we want?

"Ukraine is a country in Europe. It exists next to another country called Russia. Russia is a bigger country. Russia is a powerful country. Russia decided to invade a smaller country called Ukraine. So basically that's wrong."

But you guys aren’t responding to my point. Here is what Richard Grenell, Trump’s point man, said yesterday:

I can’t think of a better security assurance than private equity forces on the ground, American businessmen on the ground…we will have a bunch of Americans in Ukraine…

I think he’s right about this and if I were Zelensky I would agree to this deal based on this point alone. What I’m NOT sure about is that it’s good for the U.S. in exchange for these minerals we are basically guaranteeing Ukraine just as we would under NATO. And isn’t Russia going to be threatened by this?

It’s not like we haven’t tried this before. In the 1960s we made a deal with the shah of Iran in which we would extricate their oil (they didn’t know how to do it themselves) in exchange for a percentage of it (I don’t think it was 50% but close). Thousands of Americans went to work and live in Iran and we set up everything for them. That story didn’t end well.

Let a bunch of Republican donors get access to dig some coal up, it’s what they pay those ballbags for. Put Ukraine into NATO, let Russia have the land they stole. This should be an easy deal to make.

The appropriate response from Europe is to give Ukraine its version of Starlink. Oh wait... they don't have that do they?

Most of the $ were giving Ukraine is for the purchase of US weapons. So the real transfer of $ is from US taxpayers to US military contractors.

Ending the war will probably be the one thing Trump does that I like.

This is way worse than anything Biden was ever accused of doing.

Extorting Ukraine to profiteer off minerals.

Unbelievable.

Hopefully Don Jr and Eric can get a job overseeing the mineral operations in Ukraine. Perhaps a position on a board?  🇺🇦

Musk denies US threat to cut Starlink over Ukraine minerals deal

Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has denied reports that the United States threatened to shut off Starlink in Ukraine unless Kyiv agreed to a minerals deal.

Responding to a report by Reuters, Musk called the claim "false" and accused the news agency of lying. He offered no evidence to back up his statement.

His response came after the Kyiv Independent shared the news, which cited anonymous sources alleging that Starlink's continued operation in Ukraine was being tied to an agreement over mineral resources.

I don't know exactly what rare minerals are in/under Ukraine, but I believe that we are too reliant on bad hombres like China for some of the ones used for solar panels, EVs, semiconductors, etc.  It would be to our strategic benefit to get access to them.

OK. That’s a reasonable argument if true. I haven’t heard anyone on the news, including Trump defenders, make it. I still wish it were being done in a less coercive fashion because I don’t think that aspect is good for us- I prefer the old Theodore Roosevelt strategy of “talk softly and carry a big stick” over “talk harshly and carry a big stick”. But if those minerals are truly vital to our interests then we should pursue obtain them, obviously.

You actually walk around believing that the Obama/ Biden foreign policy was the superior one, despite all evidence to the contrary.

There's millions of gallons of oil and coal that's there for our taking. With this we can provide Europe with affordable energy and basically control the region. Not to mention the trillions of dollars in precious metals they have
