Patriots Land WR Stefon Diggs

Recommended Posts

Per ESPN...

"Four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Stefon Diggs and the New England Patriots reached an agreement Tuesday on a three-year, $69 million deal that includes $26 million guaranteed, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter."

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/44406785/sources-stefon-diggs-agrees-3-year-69m-deal-patriots

Diggs was the WR20 on weekly basis in Half-PPR leagues last season with Houston but only played 8 games due to an ACL injury.

just curious, wasnt his contract 24 M when he was traded to Houston.   in return for a renegotiation both sides agreed to void the deal and live with only the 1 year at 22M.

now hes signing at virtually the same (ok a bit less) at 23M per.

He lost money on this in the end.   granted not a lot but I guess he gained in the long run because if he had to wait another year to renegotiate he might not have gotten the contract he did.

He’s another year older, and returning from an injury, might have something to do with the money.

I’m not surprised he took less money to leave Houston (if it is less) for a really bad team where he can be the #1 guy because he’s all about him, and not the team.  This is great for fantasy owners who know to pass on his inflated ADP - he’s a fantasy WR3 at best and will be drafted as a WR1 based on name only if he looks healthy.

Same guaranteed.  But 1 more year and 1 more mill per than Adams.

Pats had to do something to help a young QB.  Diggs is meh these days and off injury.  But Maye gets it out of his hands so maybe he and Diggs can develop a nice underneath game.

Diggs played 53% slot with Houston, which made sense with Collins going deep. Even his last year in Buffalo, Diggs was terrible at the long-ball.

Now with Nabers, he's definitely slot... which usually isn't great for fantasy barring massive volume, which I doubt Diggs sees.

Hes been a slot for years...generally.  has been able to go outside but his best position is slot especially as hes aged.

He went to thr Pats not Giants.

Must've been thinking of Polk.  Now that I'm looking at Patriots wr depth... rather barren. Douglas, Boutte, Polk. Perhaps Diggs gets more volume than I figured.

If he stays healthy I can see a lot of receptions.   As for real football....meh.  But they needed some help for Maye to develop.  So I get the move.

Last year in PPR, Diggs ranked 44th overall (late 3rd) or Wr 21. That was with high-flying Houston and Dell hurt to start the year.

Without looking.... I'd guess about mid 5th this year. :dunno:

And the answer is per Fantasy Pros: 101st overall (mid 8th), or Wr 44.  A bit later than I figured.

Mmm that’s higher than I was hoping to see, I’m not very interested in Diggs, but at that price I would be, i was hope 5th rd or lower,  that someone would pay that price for him

I really would have preferred the Pats to sign Allen, rather than Diggs, but beggars can't be choosers. I'll take Diggs as long as they draft Hunter, or Tet still in the first round. Even healthy, Diggs is not the #1 WR that Maye needs to progress. He's a nice complimentary piece, as long as he feels properly motivated. I don't think that will be an issue, since most of Diggs problems in the past were due to being almost too motivated.

yeah I think given his age and diva attitude, he has a shelf life of 2 years tops.

long enough to develop someone to replace him.   I guess this is all they truly need.    its a band aid solution but I agree with a young QB you need to have at least one reliable target for him to continue along his development curve.

I have no problem with the move.    Team likely doesnt have enough draft picks to address all of their needs so this move allows them to address another area that is on fire at the draft.

He’s going to go postal.

As a Drake Maye keeper owner, I'm very happy they did something to get Maye a weapon.

If you mean a distraction in the locker room when he figures out he’s on a terrible team that he can’t produce stats on, I agree!

You can pretty much write IN INK - Pats take LSU OT Will Campbell.

well, I wouldnt argue with that If I was a pats fan (which I am not)

I assume the signing of Diggs was to give a weapon to Maye, and to allow them to address other needs in the draft.  OT likely being one of those needs.

if this is the path they are taking.... I dont mind it.

I think that the Pats are pretty much keeping all options open at this point. I think that right now it's #1 - Hunter, #2 - Carter and #3 - Drop back and take a Tackle, or Tet/Tyler Warren. Regardless of what happens, I firmly believe that they will trade back into the backend of round #1 and take the best available Tackle.

well, if building a team this is what I like to see.    you cant have your young QB operating without a good line.   Ideally a great line.     thing is, you can get by with a lower talent RB if your line is good.   so many good things can happen in the offense when the line plays well and does what it needs to do.   I'd argue its the most important area to win the battle on the field.   If you control the LOS, you control the game (for the most part)

Ray - I completely agree. The only reason that I want them to take a WR first is because I think that the distance between Hunter/Tet and the other WR's that can be had at the end of the first round is MUUCH bigger than the distance between the first Tackle taken and the 2-3 that will be available at the end of the round. I want them to double dip at Tackle early in this draft. The Pats had BC's left tackle Trapilo in for a visit last week, so I would not be surprised to see him drafted in the 4th/5th by the Pats.

They need a starting running back too. Ashton Jeanty or Travis Hunter are the best players in the draft.

If they can build on their oline making it better, I think they can wait on a rb, Stevenson with an improved oline can get the job done.
