British racing driver Katherine Legge told CNN Sports that she has been inundated with thousands of hateful messages, death threats, vulgar and inappropriate comments across multiple social media platforms since she entered NASCAR in March.

One direct message on X said that she should hang herself, the same account adding in a separate, public, post, “You need to be assassinated.” Another advised her to “swallow a shotgun.”

This makes no sense.  There have been plenty of women in NASCAR previously and they haven't gotten death threats.  And No Katherine, you are not the only woman competing in NASCAR.   There's either more to this story or it's being embellished.

i don't follow nascar very closely but how do we know previous female drivers didn't receive death threats?  I would also imagine that internet tough guys and bullying is more prevalent now with the social media landscape than it was back in Danica Patricks era.

Non story. Every popular person in their public facing field gets bad comments and even death threats. It's just that a few of them who aren't good at what they do try to get attention out of it.

To be direct, she really doesn't belong in Nascar. She's only allowed to race here because of a new rule Nascar implemented this year. She runs at the back of the pack and in 5 races(?) crashed into faster drivers and taken them out. That's what generating some of the animosity, and tweeting at her she sucks, you are slow, you don't belong, whatever, all drivers deal with that.  Obviously though some people have gone way past that line.

  The new rule allows drivers with limited NASCAR experience, but relevant experience elsewhere, to race in the Cup Series under certain conditions.

like I said, I don't follow it closely. I vaguely remember when she started and I would assume that was more during the time period where facebook was cool but before  twitter/X, IG, tiktok, etc.  

 

edit: apparently she started in 2011? So I am right in regard to facebook still being cool.... although twitter and IG were around, I don't think they were nearly as popular yet.

Yeah, I feel like all "athletes" should be able to handle criticism. I think it's still fairly gross when  "grown ass men" as some people are fond of saying, hide behind a screen telling someone to kill themselves, etc. 

But I also feel like the easiest way to combat that is to stay off social media and ignore pathetic people.

It's most likely little kids. Except for you since you are thinking along those terms.
