Democrats underwater in new poll

The Democratic Party’s approval rating is underwater at 40 percent, according to a new poll, the latest troubling sign for a party still grappling with its losses from November.  

A Harvard CAPS/Harris Poll released on Monday found that only 4 in 10 respondents approved of the job that the Democratic Party is doing, a slight drop from June, when 42 percent of respondents answered similarly.

Of the 40 percent of respondents who gave the Democratic Party a thumbs-up, they included 72 percent of Democrats and 29 percent of independent or other voters.

The latest poll shows that the party’s disapproval rating sits at 60 percent, slowly inching up from 58 percent in June. Twenty-eight percent of surveyed Democrats and 71 percent of independent and other voters contributed to the overall 60 percent disapproval rating of the party.

By comparison, the Harvard CAPS/Harris poll found the GOP with a 48 percent approval rating, which includes 85 percent of Republicans and 38 percent of independent and other voters who had that sentiment.

Overall, the GOP had a 52 percent disapproval rating.

The polling underscores a broader trend for Democrats who have grappled with low approval ratings as the party has attempted to reset after a disappointing November election. While the party has begun to regain some of its footing with its messaging as it rallies against the Medicaid cuts included in Republicans’ major policy bill, the party is still searching for national leaders to help guide the party.

“Democrats are doing a good job throwing jabs at the administration but that’s not helping them with their own image, which remains in the cellar,” said Mark Penn, chair of the Harris Poll, in an email.

However, the Harvard CAPS/Harris polling indicates there may be several openings for Democrats: For one, the latest poll found that only 40 percent of respondents said the country was on the right track, while 51 percent said it was on the wrong track.

And while 52 percent of respondents believe the U.S. economy is strong today, only 38 percent of respondents also say that the economy is on the right track. 

One thing likely to play in Democrats’ favor is that the president’s party in power typically faces headwinds during the midterm cycle, which could aid Democrats in retaking the House and making inroads in the Senate. 

The Harvard CAPS/Harris Poll survey was conducted from July 6 to July 8 and surveyed 2,044 registered voters. It is a collaboration of the Center for American Political Studies at Harvard University and the Harris Poll.

The survey is an online sample and weighted to reflect known demographics. The margin of error is 2.2 percentage points

I see this as more of the fracturing of the Democrat party than anything else.   

The far left radicals hold too much influence now, they hate everything and everyone, notably this nation.  So as they grow the Democrat polling will go down.  The leftists hate moderate Democrats as much as Republicans.  So I think we are watching a party splinter into two.  

This might seem bad but I think that eventually we end up with three parties.....which might actually save the Democrat party as the elimination of leftists would entice the moderates they have lost to come back.  JMHO

I would be more alarmed if this wasn't the case. The Dems have fumbled the last year and a half away being ineffectual, griping dipshits while the GOP happily turns the country into an autocracy. Unfortunately, the GOP will continue to piss off more voters by doing the opposite of what we want, and the Dems will clean up in the midterms. Then, having learned nothing about how badly they screwed up or why the nation hates them, they will go about their fuckery and call it a "mandate" just like the morons on the hill right now.

Harvard Should Break up With the Harris Poll

Harvard is lending its name to a methodologically flawed poll that often promotes a right-wing political agenda.

Every month, the Harvard-Harris Poll (a partnership between Harvard’s Center for American Political Studies, The Harris Poll, and HarrisX) administers a public opinion survey that tracks Americans’ attitudes on a wide range of political and social issues.

It’s no secret that the Harvard-Harris Poll is inaccurate and misleading. A number of experts from both sides of the aisle — including statistician Nate R. Silver, Democratic pollster Geoff D. Garin ’75, Republican pollster Chris Wilson, liberal journalist Josh M.J. Marshall, and conservative law professor Ilya Somin — have criticized the survey. FiveThirtyEight, a public opinion blog that aggregates political polls, recently ranked Harris Insights & Analytics in the bottom 50 percent of American pollsters.

Harvard aspires to be the top academic institution in the world — so why is the University attaching its name to a mediocre poll that has been blasted by political experts? Harvard should immediately disaffiliate from this flawed and biased survey.

Since 2017 — when Trump sympathizer Mark J. Penn ’76 became one of the poll’s co-directors — the poll has relied on leading questions. Unlike a proper survey, which asks unbiased questions in order to collect accurate and reliable information, Harvard-Harris poll questions tend to align with right-wing narratives and prompt respondents to lean toward conservative choices.

To see this ideological slant, let’s take a look at a question in last month’s poll about U.S. President Joseph R. Biden’s bipartisan immigration bill.

In the prompt, the poll regurgitated Republican talking points, citing the number of migrants that would enter the country each day, — a claim that is highly misleading — and stating that Trump has opposed the bill “to give the Biden administration any wins on an issue that he says they failed to do anything about.”

The question failed to specify a single positive consequence of the bill. Naturally, as a result of this skewed framing, the results showed that a majority supported Trump’s position of blocking the bill from passing. [...]

Many of you dumb focks will continue to believe in polls.   Even though I have told you too many times that they are entirely useless.  One side is biased, the other side is biased...etc etc etc...Polls are 100% a reflection of today's media.  Biased completely.  Used to try to influence, and not to actually show anything.   Someday you will all get it.
