Agree with Terminator 2 and Empire Strikes Back.
Also Godfather II

The originals were all good movies. They probably don’t make sequels for originals that aren’t good though.

GF2 is great. GF1 was so freaking good though.

Maybe Last Crusade over Raiders?

The Dark Knight > Batman Begins

Getting into the MCU, there's a few sequels that are better than the original movies.

Evil Dead 2 > Evil Dead

I thought about this but didn't do, both great and different.  Evil Dead, when I saw it as a kid, truly scared me, lots of great gore, just watched it today, but Evil Dead 2 is hilarious.

Yeah I was debating as well...  I love gory movies and the first one was great, but I think Bruce Campbell and his comedy just made the second one better...

That’s a good call.

I am not sure I ever saw either all the way through when I was younger. When I try watching them now I just can't get through them

saw Road Warrior first and thought it was great.  Watched Mad Max after and it sucked.

Trilogy

Every movie that takes place after the original is a sequel.

Every movie that takes place before the original is a prequel.

A third movie is most commonly called a trilogy (as a set of three) or a threequel (a specific, informal term for the third installment). It can also be referred to as "Part 3" or have a unique title like The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

Common terms for a third movie
  • Trilogy:
The most formal term for a set of three connected films, books, or other works.

  • An informal but widely understood term for the third film in a series, essentially a sequel to a sequel.
