What we know

  • Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier was arrested this morning in Orlando, Florida, in connection with a federal gambling-related investigation, two senior law enforcement officials told NBC News.
  • The FBI and other officials will be announcing charges later this morning, the officials said.
  • Chauncey Billups, coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, was also arrested by the FBI, two law enforcement officials say.
  • An FBI spokesperson confirmed former NBA player Damon Jones, who played for the Cleveland Cavaliers, has been arrested in Las Vegas.
  • Members and associates of organized crime groups are among the couple of dozen people expected to face criminal charges in two separate illegal gambling-related cases.

They are talking about this on Dan Patrick show this morn. Been getting ready so missing pieces and they don’t know anything but high stakes home poker game was being mentioned.

Really curious to see what this involves. Sports betting, high stakes poker games, points shaving. Is it all NBA related?

Story is pretty vague right now. Will be following.

Dayum. I heard about Rozier, but not Billups. If there's a coach involved, there could be some serious fireworks.

High stakes poker games run by the mob. I can see where that could lead to game fixing.

There were rumors of this same thing with the pistons back in the Isiah Thomas era

Of the all the sports shaving points has to be the easiest in basketball. Can also come at it with fouls / refs which we have already seen.

This is a big deal here in Denver because Billups is a legend here.  Waiting on details but if true gonna be devastating here.  :(

Tangent off this in my state you can’t even use DraftKings. Have to go to a casino to sports bet.

Was in Columbus Ohio for work a couple weeks back and they straight up had DraftKings bars which I thought was a bit intense 😂

I love betting and don’t have issue with gambling but it being promoted that openly did just seem off to me.

i Say that prop bets should be banned.

These are the easiest to rig…I’d say bust people through tracking unusual bets then bring the hammer down crazy hard instead.

But you do have a problem if are betting big on first pitch is a ball 😂😂

I mean their guy Pablo Torres is on this story and it’s not like they are news per se, but yeah that they have a 80 gazillion dollar deal does seem a bit comflicty 😂😂

ESPN now on it. TV is on subtitles so missed part but they mentioned unusual bets placed in Rozier under in a game. He was pulled early. He was in this poker game…Yikes!

Ha, I bet a 3 way parlay on a Super Bowl with the first leg being the coin flip.

First? It's going to be like a chorus from Jesus Christ Superstar. "What's the buzz? Tell me what's a happening."

😂 nice!

I do a Super Bowl sports sheet with like 20 50/50 bets like this so everyone can play.

If you find yourself laying a grand on the first pitch of Jesus Bazardo in the 7th inning in August may have a problem!

That'd create a lot more action among illegal bookmakers.  The best way to reduce fixing is for legal bookmakers to spot and report unusual betting patterns. That's probably how the current situation came to light.

Strange story as top level sports fixing is so rare - although this will wrongly make people believe it's rampant.  Most sports fixing occurs in low-level sports - particularly tennis. Don't make squat, crazy expenses, and easy to get away with. Don't even have to throw a game, just say the first set, or lose first break, or numerous other options other than the final outcome. Enough players have admitted as much.

Somewhere David Stern and Michael Jordan are sitting around, puffing cigars and sipping whiskey, laughing their asses off about how easy it was to get away with this crap in the old days.

Word to the wise, you can't fix bets that don't get a lot of action.  It's too easy to spot unusual volume.

You need wagers that have enough handle to hide your bet amount.
