Surprised there’s not a thread about this. It’s going to be second only to inflation in the minds of most people who will vote next November. 
 

Republicans argue that the subsidies, established during Covid, were never meant to be permanent, that there is a ton of corruption, that Obamacare is unsustainable anyhow, that there has got to be a better alternative. And…they’re right about all of it. But they don’t have a good alternative. Personally I don’t see a better alternative for the time being than just throwing money at Obamacare and extending the subsidies indefinitely. Maybe they will. But it looks unlikely and if they don’t, they’re going to get creamed.

I think the title of the thread is a little bit misleading. For anyone who hasn't had any experience with Obamacare (the affordable care act) subsidies are still there, just not the enhanced subsidies that were added during Covid.

Yup. My home insurance and property/ school taxes are up  by 7k in 7 years. None of the school or town/county employees are on Obamacare. I’m doing my part, get out of my pockets.

I live in Taxachusetts. Romney care has been an unmitigated disaster. Make people that don't have insurance, pay a penalty when filing their taxes. Well done

It’s around 24 million people per what I’m reading. Perhaps that’s your idea of a “few million”. But a lot of them will be small business owners so I imagine there will be much related fallout.   

You might also want to consider that there is some relationship between the doubling of your car insurance and real estate taxes and the politicians you have chosen to support.

The No Kings rally was extremely patriotic. At the event I took part in there were American flags everywhere. Nationwide there were about 7 million people; not sure where the 50 million number came from. But it was the largest single day protest in our history.

Republican moderates in the Senate are working very hard on a last minute extension of the extended subsidies for two years in exchange for financial limits and measures to reduce corruption. But there are a lot of problems with getting this agreed to, one of the main ones being abortion. Republicans want insurance for that removed from any coverage. That’s a nonstarter for Democrats. And the moderate Republicans need Democrats to vote for this because many conservative Republicans won’t. So this compromise will probably fail.

I know a couple that refuses to get married. They have 4 kids and the mom is a bartender and doesn't claim enough to get her over the free healthcare threshold. She makes WAY more the limit. The mom and kids get free healthcare and the dad gets his through his work. That is how you work the system

I was referring to Romneycare. 

But you’re right, plenty of people hate Obamacare. The majority of Americans, per polling, seem to like it. I’m not one of them. I opposed it. 

Even so, we have it now and IMO to get rid of it would make things even worse. The key to Obamacare is that people don’t have to pay more for pre-existing conditions. Once we as a nation decided to do that, we essentially made private healthcare insurance untenable. The only viable solution, short of full socialized medicine, is a system like Obamacare with all of its problems, that we’re going to have to keep throwing money at.

Lawmakers in the Democratic party are as incompetent as it gets.

If you get the 2 year extension on subsidies in exchange for exclusions on abortion, you take that deal 100 out of 100 times.

Dont let the reporting fool you.  The premiums that double are for high income households who lose access to all subsidies.  People with low income will see some increase, but, not even close to double.  And it's more correct to say they revert back to pre-covid levels, you know, since covid is over with.

Even if the reporting is inaccurate (and I have no idea if this is the case) the reaction of Republican politicians in swing districts certainly is not. In a word they are panicking (thats the word THEY are using not me.) 

If you’re right then this won’t have much of an impact on the upcoming elections. But it sure sounds like it will.

This crap was rampant in NorCal (and the vast majority of folks in the area I lived in vote R, for what it's worth). 75% of the folks seen at the clinic I worked at were on Medi-Cal. I know for absolute fact that a bare minimum of 25% of them were making large amounts on the side, either as laborers or pot growers/harvesters/clippers. To the point where I knew multiple people that were likely worth well into 7 figures that were getting free medical care. That pissed me off.

But hey, at least their weed was good. And CHEAP!
