I think that most QBs are system QBs and some systems really suck. A lot of the time a QB is being drafted into a terrible franchise and expected to play like a seasoned vet. Usually behind a sub par line with crappy weapons.  This is why you see teams always willing to take another chance on a qb. Tua has been mostly a turd so far. 100 percent guaranteed that there is a coach salivating about him being cut. HE can fix him.

I'm very happy for Darnold. He is a perfect example of why most QBs should not be drafted and then started right away. The Jets have done this repeatedly, (Sanchez, Geno, Darnold, Wilson). ... but I also don't think Darnold was some awesome prospect that the Jets ruined either. People have to remember he didn't do anything after being traded to Carolina and he then got to be a backup in San Fran for a good coaching staff and system... then finally had his breakout in Minnesota with another good coaching staff and system and plenty of weapons, at age 27.   It's sort of similar to Geno Smith, who got to go to the Giants and sit and learn behind Eli (when the Giants were at least somewhat well run still) and then go to a good coaching staff/organization in Seattle with prime Metcalf and Lockett.  In Vegas though, he turned into a pumpkin.  Yes, same coach and some weapons and I do think Darnold is better but the point is both got to sit and learn in well run organizations.

Darnold looked like Jets Darnold to end 2024 and the Vikings had used a first round pick on McCarthy. What should they have done differently? Throw the bag at a guy who was supposed to be their backup? 3 years 100 mil, 55 guaranteed.

I don't fault the team for how they handled the QB situation this year. They didn't have much choice given the way the rest of the roster was constructed and paid. My issue with KAM is his lack of drafting prowess. Most of his picks have been hot trash.

Darnold was awful for the Vikes to close last year. I think letting him walk was the right call even if the result didn’t work out in hindsight.

i don't follow the Vikings enough to know all the grievances a fan could have with their GM, so i'm just going off the comment being made in this thread about Darnold.

Teams saw that fans were upset because only a few teams had one (because there were only a few to begin with).  Then teams started conning their fans into thinking that their mediocre QB's were "franchise QB's".  Over time, they started believing their own con.  Repeat the lie enough times, you start to believe it.  Fact is, there's still only a small few QB's that are franchise QB's.  The rest are JAG's who are either in the right situation or wrong situation.  Instead of drafting a JAG in the first round, build your OLine and talent around a QB you take later in the draft, and he'll produce better than the guys taken before him (see guys like Jalen Hurts, Geno Smith, Russell Wilson, Kirk Cousins, and Dak Prescott).  Yeah, a lot of QB's go in round 1... a lot of busts go in round 1 too.  Maybe instead of teams lying to themselves that the guy they get will solve their problems, they actually solve their problems, then draft a QB... they'd find out that they're less likely to bust on a QB.

I mean, obviously I agree with all of this. I'd remove Geno from your example but the rest are perfect. Even someone like Bo Nix kind of feels like that, though he was a first rounder.

I believe the Jets will take a QB with the earlier of their first round picks. Normally, i'd be against it, but in their situation they have spent draft capital on the offense line in recent drafts with Fashanu, Tippmann and Membou... and obviously with offensive weapons in Wilson, Hall (who i expect to be tagged) and Mason Taylor. I even kind of like the more minor moves they made to test out young WRs with a change of scenery in Mitchell and Metchie.  They also have the Colts improving 1st rounder if they want to draft another WR.

It's a totally different situation than when they forced the Zach Wilson pick.

Baker and the Browns have made it just as far as Baker with the Bucs.  With the Browns they had the Chiefs on the ropes in the divisional round.
