tony hardware 0 Posted October 10, 2006 Many states formerly used themes, images or actual scaled down versions of the Confederate flag in their state flags (Mississippi). Some states have abandoned this practice. Apparently, one still hangs outside the Talladega track (see below story if you want). I think the flag can be hung as a demonstration of Southern pride without adopting the negative aspersions cast upon the flag by its association with slavery and hate groups. I think that, in proper context, this flag holds a great deal of symbolism for many Southerners and is an attractive, unifying symbol for many (despite it's dichotomous alternate symbolism representing segregation). Many people forget that this nation was once at war with itself and this flag is a reminder that a nation divided cannot stand. Anyone feel its a symbol of hate and should not be shown? http://sports.yahoo.com/nascar/news;_ylt=A...o&type=lgns
NewbieJr 541 Posted October 10, 2006 You can't seperate the good and the bad that the flag stands for. Flying the confederate flag is no different than having a swastica on your house and saying that you're not anti-jew, but you respect the discipline that the Nazi's stood for. Edited to add- Wow. I posted in a political thread.

Artist Formerly Known as Big O 0 Posted October 10, 2006 Flying the flag does not offend me but it sure does make me laugh. You can call it "Southern Pride" or "Respect for the Confederate Soldiers" all you want. IMHO, you simply make yourself look like an ignorant, inbred redneck every time you display it. Dixie Chicken 0 Posted October 10, 2006 What alot of people fail to realize is that most black people simply do not care about the confederate flag one way or another. In Mississippi there was a vote to change the state flag, getting rid of the confederate portion of it. It was voted down. The majority of the state's citizens wanted it left alone. Mississippi also has a larger black population than it does white.

But the only people worried about this friggin flag are white liberals crossing off bullet points of their daily to do list. Some white people make me fvcking sick. Get a godddamm hobby you self righteous pot heads. if they would wake up and realize its their dumbfock Dem. leadership that is crippling the African American community by giving them handouts to get votes. Jesse, Al, Louis, Hillary and Dean would be jobless if they didnt hold their voting base down. How people dont see this is beyond me.
kpbuckeye 3 Posted October 10, 2006 Does the Confederate flag offend YOU? not at all. Its a symbol of 'States Rights', of which I am in favor. just because some dirtbags have tried to use it for their cause, does not take away from its orginial orgin. peenie 1,958 Posted October 10, 2006 i'm from nj and really wasn't aware that the confederate flag meant anti-black UNTIL i moved to georgia. i actually like the look of the the flag. i can appreciate that the south is different from the north and that some people love their southern roots. i just wish the racists wouldn't fly it. there are some that have the flag bumper sticker and a saying with it that says, "southern pride, not race hate" or something like that. my sister has an american flag and a southern flag in her house and she's black. both she and her husband feel that everyone who loves the south should have one so it doesn't automatically associate itself with racists. yojimbo81 0 Posted October 11, 2006 No, the Conderate flag does not offend me. The Confederate flag does not represent slavery but the states that chose to break away from the Union. During the war some slave states fought for the Stars and Stripes. Wouldn't that make it too a representation of slavery? Like it or not, for one reason or another, the Confederate flag became part of southern culture and pop culture too i.e. Skynryd and Dukes of Hazzard. In April I drove from Chicago to Dallas. Going thru Oklahoma I saw a ton of them. Perhaps someone from the south can put better perspective on this.

As a white person from the north It does not bother me a bit. I am also in GA (Savannah) now and hear a lot of debate. Here is my argument with the southern pride thing. Back in the day it did stand for southern pride. Then the KKK and other groups used it as a banner for their actions. The southern pride people looked the other way and never said "stop using our banner for violence." They stood by and let them hijack their symbol and said nothing. (kind of reminds me of today's peaceful Muslims) So while most white people today do not see it as a racist symbol, I can not blame any black person for saying it is. I've no problem with the Dukes of Hazzard using the flag and I love Skynyrd and have no doubt theirs is a positive portrayal of the flag. The thing that bugs me -and this is a good point Bill- is that the racists use it. And it bothers me that when that happens, we don't hear enough condemnation of them from everyday southerners who love that flag.

wil_d_thril 0 Posted October 11, 2006 The flag does not offend me. It is a matter of our history and has a place. At the same time, I would not be running around displaying the flag on the back of a pickup truck, as I am aware that it could be perceived as racist. However, in a historical perspective, I have no problem with the flag being displayed. For example, there is somewhere in the Florida state capitol of Tallahassee where the Confederate flag flies alongside all of the other flags that have flown over Florida (to include the Spanish flag). And I bring this up because several years ago there was a controversy about it flying. I think it is important that the flag continue to fly in this manner and that we not be so insecure that we say that the flag may never fly anywhere.

Vikings4ever 568 Posted October 11, 2006 No, but I do roll my eyes at retards that display it. Especially when they're not from/in the south. When I went to high school, a lot of the hicks would have it on their truck, or have it on their clothes. Pretty much everyone else was , but a few people whined about it, and the school banned it my senior year.

I think it is important that the flag continue to fly in this manner and that we not be so insecure that we say that the flag may never fly anywhere. This context especially sounds particularly harmless. At a KKK rally the flag is hateful. Then you have the entire middle ground. I don't get offended by the flag nor by southern pride. Southerners proably feel the same way about the south that I feel about the industrial midwest. Now the midwest hasn't got its own a flag to fly, nor do we have the history of secession or slavery or segregation so I wouldn't know how it all mixes in. Since racists like to use it, I can understand blacks and liberals taking offense to the flag. Obviously, there's a lot of symbolism that people put into that flag. Well all flags for that matter. People are going to see what they want.
Electric Mayhem 35 Posted October 11, 2006 It's kind of like flying the Jolly Roger on your car. It could mean "I uphold the standards of Pirate Law and will take your possesions at the first opportunity - by force if necessary." or, it could mean "YARR!!! Look at me!!! I'm a freakin' moron!!" ArnieBragg 2 Posted October 11, 2006 not at all. Its a symbol of 'States Rights', of which I am in favor. This is pretty much how I feel. Not everyone who fought for the South was a racist slave owning hick who worshipped the flying of the confederate flag. Some fought for their homeland (read: state).
