posty 2,307 Posted October 20, 2009 http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/...,655632,00.html US President Barack Obama has shelved his plans to attend festivities marking the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will reportedly take his place at the Nov. 9 celebrations. Germany is going to have to wait longer than expected for US President Barack Obama's first official visit. Citing government sources in Berlin, Reuters reported on Friday that Obama will not attend the anniversary festivities marking two decades since the fall of the Berlin Wall. The event will take place on Nov. 9 -- just two days before Obama embarks on a long-planned trip to Asia on Nov. 11. According to the German television channel n-tv, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will stand in for the president. It is considered unlikely that her husband, the former President Bill Clinton, will accompany her. Berlin is going all out for the anniversary, with such luminaries as Kofi Annan, Mikhail Gorbachev and Lech Walesa expected to be in attendance. German Chancellor Angela Merkel is pushing hard to complete ongoing coalition negotiations soon so that her government is fully formed in time for the festivities. Despite Obama's absence, however, Merkel will get some face time with the US president in early November. She is planning to travel to Washington and will be addressing a joint session of US Congress on Nov. 3. Obama has not visited Berlin since taking power. He was in Germany briefly in June, when he made stops in Dresden and at the Buchenwald concentration camp memorial. It was during that trip that Merkel extended the invitation for Obama to help Germany celebrate the fall of the Wall. Merkel's government expressed understanding with Obama's scheduling difficulties, Reuters reported. Obama's first state visit to Berlin is now expected to take place in 2010. Correct, and, being fascists themselves, they would never celebrate the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Mungwater 588 Posted October 20, 2009 Yeah, its fitting that he's going to miss the celebration. Meaning, it is the spot of two of the most memorable presidential speeches of all time, there is no way he can top them, so why bother?
NewbieJr 541 Posted October 20, 2009 you and newbie's vaginas bothering you today? Why would you think something's bothering me? I'm in a super-de-dooper mood today. Besides, are you naive enough to think that either RP or Posty or GettnHuge (or any of their ilk) wouldn't have started some sort of wasteful-spending thread had he flown over there? Come on, are you new here?

We played a huge role in that wall comming down, its what international relations should be about. It should not be going places and dragging America through the mud, this is an instance where we did a lot of good and of course he is dodging it for what a new healthcare speech? date night? watermelon eating contest? Now who is going to call me racist for that? Look up the definition of racism before you do.

Exactly, this is something that the President of the United States should be attending, not trying to get the Olympics for Chicago or attacking a TV network that disagrees with him... NorthernVike 2,080 Posted October 20, 2009 It doesn't matter. You know and I know that some of you asswholes would have been bitching about him going there. Yeah because it was a Dem Pres. that precipitated the fall of the wall. You may want to give up on this one Newbie, there's no fish there.

This isn't about this particular topic. It's a generalization that we all know is true. Whatever he decided to do here, and in every other decision he'll make in the next 7 1/2 years, will be met with criticism from Rush, Hannity, & their little sheep that reside here. You know it and I know it. Except you're one of those sheep, so you won't admit it. Have a great day.

MedStudent 56 Posted October 20, 2009 If Obama goes then he is met with: "Whats he doing over there when we have a war going on and the economy is in shambles!" Then if gave a speech in Germany: "those cheering crowds in Germany are just like the crowds that cheered Hitler!" Obama sux either way!! Throw the bum out! He's not doing enough for me me me me me! As I've stated numerous times, if the ecomy is still bad in 2011, he will be a one-termer. If it's buzzing along, he'll be re-elected in a landslide. Any other 'issue' is water under the bridge. I think a trip to discuss economic policy and security in one of the most rapidly developing parts of the world is more important. Its more than just an every run of the mill anniversary celebration, its celebrating arguably the most significant event of the last fifty years in the eyes of the world. He'll travel to try and get the olympics to line his buddies pockets, but he's missing a great opportunity here. I've lived in Germany for about five years, and the Germans absolutely LOVE Kennedy and Reagan for what they did to help tear down the wall. This is an event that he should be attending. But then again foxnews did not have as many lemmings back then. I was living there at that time, I don't know if Clinton was asked.. I don't remember. Clinton wasn't really well liked by the Germans because of all the base closings, but he did get some good press when congress impeached him. My landlord even told me in broken english "Fat girl, no big problem, leave alone". Lots of little german towns where we had bases and such turned into ghost towns. Restaurants/bars, a lot of them went out of business because the soldiers left. Fox news is absolute garbage, but then again, I think all the media sucks. Every outlet slants the story. I had a reporter in Macedonia come up to me and ask me some questions (where we were going, what was the mission, where our guys are..) blah blah blah. Well, I told her that she'll have to talk to the public affairs office at the UN. She replied with "Don't you think the American people have a right to know where our soldiers are going and what they're doing??" I just replied, "For the sake of the soldiers security, no they don't." She then responded that she was going to take my name down and get my commission revoked. Nothing happened obviously, but their sense of ego is annoying.

wiffleball 4,660 Posted October 21, 2009 Seriously, think about today's environment. Imagine if Obummer quoted the last democratic president to make a big speech at the wall. I AM A BERLINER!!! Fox: "Can you believe it! Obama rejected his own country! He's ashamed to be Amurican!" Man, if stupid is a trickle, this country is shooting the rapids... KSB2424 3,086 Posted October 21, 2009 I don't think this is that big of a deal. Nor did I think the whole Olympic thing was either. But it does kinda seem he has is priorities kinda out of whack. Sorta like Obama going out his way to shake hands with Chavez and kissing up to those types, but disregarding allies and not caring about stuff like this. He reminds me of a woman at a sporting event that has to ask which colored uniform she is supposed to pull for. Somebody needs to tap Obama on the shoulder and say: "Hey Man, see those democratic countries in the UN? Those guys are on our team. See those communist dictators that support terroism and other forms of crimes against humanity? Those are the bad guys. I realize they all don't wear the same uniforms, but we pull for the good guys. When the bad guys do something wrong we boo and hiss. When the good guys celebrate, we clap with them. mmmkay?"
