New York City Panel Clears Way for Mosque Near Ground Zero

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2010/08/03/new-york-city-panel-clears-way-mosque-ground-zero/

A New York City panel voted unanimously Tuesday to reject landmark status for a building near the World Trade Center site, paving the way for construction of a mosque and an Islamic community center.

Opponents of the project, including 9/11 first-responders and family members of victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, have said the location would be insensitive.

The mosque is slated to be part of an Islamic community center to be operated by a group called the Cordoba Initiative, which says the center will be a space for moderate Muslim voices.

Several members of roughly 50 people who attended the hearing applauded the ruling, while others shouted "shame" as commission chairman Robert Tierney called for the vote. The city Landmarks Preservation Commission then proceeded to vote 9-0 against granting landmark status to the site's 152-year-old building, which can now be torn down to make way for the Islamic center.

The move was applauded by the New York Civil Liberties Union and the American Civil Liberties Union, citing principles of religious freedom.

"We congratulate the Landmarks Preservation Commission for promoting our nation's core values and not letting bias get in the way of the rule of law," the groups said in a joint statement. "The free exercise of religion is one of America's most fundamental freedoms. For hundreds of years, our pluralism and tolerance have sustained and strengthened our nation. On 9/11, religious extremists opposed to that very pluralism killed 3,000 Americans. Those fanatics would want nothing more than for our nation to turn its back on the very ideals that make this country so great."

On face value this seems out of line. However the more I think about it, the more it makes sense to allow them to build it. Freedom to excercise religion is one of the most fundamental things here in America. And we need a louder "moderate" muslim voice to offset the radicals. Any other country would not do this, which is sorta the point. We have those founding freedoms and even 9/11 won't sway us from them.

the purpose of the mosque is to define victory over the US for terrorist islamic extremists.

The american hating libs like the idea of the US eating some crow and support it in the name of freedom of religion.

This is pretty simple stuff...

America was founded on religious tolerance. I think it sends a message that the 9/11 attacks didn't alter our fundamental principles. The terrorists don't "win" if we let moderate Muslims establish a mosque near Ground Zero. They win if we start voluntarily limiting our own rights and turning on other Americans out of fear.

Exactly. If the muslims alter our principles, beliefs, and way of life, they win. This shows we're stronger than that. It shows the terrorists are full of lies and that america is the land of the free, choice, and opportunity. They hate us, yet they don't allow freedoms in their own country. They say we're ruining the world yet we welcome people of all races, religions, nationalities, and let them live freely in our great country.

Anybody who says this mosque is a "victory mosque" is a focking moron, ethnocentric, prejudiced, and ignorant. The muslims who will be attending that mosque are americans. To suggest muslims are less american is a ra-tard move. Your religion or color of skin doesn't make you more american.

In a world where September 11th never happened, there would be absolutely no objections.

On the subject of Islam, I have to deal with campaign ads from this crazy dude in the TN Governors Primary.

Tennessee Lt. Gov: Religious Freedom May Not Count For Muslims

http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/07/tennessee-lt-gov-religious-freedom-doesnt-count-if-youre-muslim-video.php

Tennessee Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey, currently running third in the state's Republican gubernatorial primary race, says he's not sure if Constitutional guarantees of freedom of religion apply to the followers of the world's second-largest faith, Islam.

At a recent event in Hamilton County, Ramsey was asked by a man in the audience about the "threat that's invading our country from the Muslims." Ramsey proclaimed his support for the Constitution and the whole "Congress shall make no law" thing when it comes to religion. But he also said that Islam, arguably, is less a faith than it is a "cult."

The question, Ramsey mused, was related to the simmering topic of a new Muslim community center scheduled to be built in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Ramsey, like many conservatives weighing in on the debate, mistakenly confused the center with a mosque -- which Murfreesboro already has -- and then proceeded to foment fears that Sharia saw would be practiced by Muslims there.

"Now, you know, I'm all about freedom of religion. I value the First Amendment as much as I value the Second Amendment as much as I value the Tenth Amendment and on and on and on," he said. "But you cross the line when they try to start bringing Sharia Law here to the state of Tennessee -- to the United States. We live under our Constitution and they live under our Constitution."

Some of you focktards are so stupid.

The Muslim religion did not attack the WTC. Religious radicals did. They don't represent the views of 99% of Islam. It's no different than fundamental Christians bombing abortion clinics. Should we not build any Christian churches next to bombed abortion clinics?

This whole "war on terrorism" is a focking facade. Take a trip outside the west and see who everyone thinks the "terrorists" are. So sad how small minded some people still are. It's the 21st century people! God is a lie! Wake up and smell the science.

Don't get it twisted... I'm not buddies with anybody who believes in god. Anyone too stupid to realize every single religion/god is based off the same basic astrology is not someone worth having a beer with.

Sunrise/Sunset, Heaven/Hell, Good/Bad... 12 signs of the zodiac, 12 apostles... blah blah blah.

Horus (Egypt 3000 BC): Born Dec 25th of the virgin Isis-Meri, accompanied by a star in the east and adorned by 3 kings. Had 12 disciples he traveled and performed miracles with. Crucified, dead 3 days and resurrected.

Attis (Greece 1200 BC): Born Dec 25th of the virgin Nana. Crucified, dead 3 days and resurrected

Krishna (India - 900 BC): Born of the virgin Devaki (meaning "Divine One") with a star in the east announcing his arrival.

Dionysus (Greece - 500 BC): Born Dec 25th of a virgin. Traveled with a group performing miracles like turning water into wine. Referred to as "King of Kings" and "Alpha and Omega"... resurrected upon death.

Mithra (Persia 1200BC): Born Dec 25th of a virgin. Had 12 disciples and performed miracles. Buried for 3 days and resurrected. Was referred to as "The Truth" and "The Light"

Sound similar to some other guy being worshiped lately? Why so many similarities you may ask? Allow me to share...

The birth of each "god" is based 100% on astrology. The star in the east "sirius" is the brightest star in the sky. On December 24th it aligns with the 3 stars of Orions belt (The 3 Kings). All 4 stars make a line that points to where the sun rises on December 25th. That's why the three kings follow the star in the east in order to find the "The birth of the sun". The death and resurrection etc. etc are all just metaphorical representations of simple astrological events.

I could go on and on, but I won't bore you with the truth anymore... You guys have fun destroying the planet with your invisible friends...

George Carlin said it best:

When it comes to bullshit, big-time, major league bullsh!t, you have to stand in awe of the all-time champion of false promises and exaggerated claims, religion. No contest. No contest. Religion. Religion easily has the greatest bullsh!t story ever told. Think about it. Religion has actually convinced people that there's an invisible man living in the sky who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever 'til the end of time!

But He loves you. He loves you, and He needs money! He always needs money! He's all-powerful, all-perfect, all-knowing, and all-wise, somehow just can't handle money! Religion takes in billions of dollars, they pay no taxes, and they always need a little more. Now, you talk about a good bullsh!t story. Holy Sh!t!

Christian Conservative Leader Calls for No More Mosques in U.S.

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-20013448-503544.html

In the wake of the uproar over the mosque to be built near "ground zero" in New York, a prominent, controversial social conservative is calling for the prohibition of the construction of any mosques in the United States.

"Permits should not be granted to build even one more mosque in the United States of America, let alone the monstrosity planned for Ground Zero," Bryan Fischer of the American Family Association wrote this week on the AFA website. "This is for one simple reason: each Islamic mosque is dedicated to the overthrow of the American government."

Fischer is the AFA's director of Issue Analysis for Government and Public Policy. The AFA is a conservative Christian group that been in the news before for taking a number of extreme positions -- for instance, earlier this year Fischer called for Tilikum, the SeaWorld orca that thrashed its trainer to death, to be killed according to Biblical rules. In 2005, the AFA finally ended its boycott of Disney, which it kept of for nine years to protest the company's erosion of moral values.

Fischer's position takes the debate to an entirely new level. He writes that every mosque "is a potential jihadist recruitment and training center" and that because of Islam's "subversive ideology, Muslims cannot claim religious freedom protections under the First Amendment."

Another AFA writer, Elijah Friedeman, wrote that he agreed each mosque is a "potential jihadist recruitment and training center," but he said the right to build mosques in the U.S. should be protected. "If we ignore the legal foundation of our nation, we will be left in a legal quicksand with no protection from others who want to suspend our freedoms when they feel like it," he said. "I would give the Devil the benefit of the law, if for no other reason than my own safety."

Some people are just plain, focking retarded.

Greg Gutfeld’s Gay Bar

http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/242916/greg-gutfelds-gay-bar-stephanie-gutmann

Greg Gutfeld of Fox News Channel and The Daily Gut has proposed the best response yet to Park51, a.k.a. Cordoba House, the 13-story “community center” and mosque two blocks away from Ground Zero: “I am planning to build and open the first gay bar that caters not only to the west, but also Islamic gay men. To best express my sincere desire for dialogue, the bar will be situated next to the mosque Park51, in an available commercial space.”

“This is not a joke,” Gutfeld claims. “I’ve already spoken to a number of investors, who have pledged their support in this bipartisan bid for understanding and tolerance.”

“As you know, the Muslim faith doesn’t look kindly upon homosexuality, which is why I’m building this bar. It is an effort to break down barriers and reduce deadly homophobia in the Islamic world.”

Gutfeld’s proposal has already gone viral and ideas for names for the bar — conveying the Islamic flavor — have been pouring in from the blogosphere. They include “Al Gayda,” “The Velvet Sword,” “Party Like You’re an Infidel”, “72 Virgins,” and my favorite, “The Ba’ath Party.”

This being New York, Gutfeld’s developers will have to fight their way through a forest of zoning regulations and community opposition. The same people who signed off on a mosque two blocks from Ground Zero will have fits over drinking and dancing. To counter this, I propose that Gutfeld use the same tactics as the Cordobites: Make a complete 360 and say, “A gay bar? Whoever said anything about that? This is a refreshment and recreation center. What do you mean ‘Why this location’? We just happen to like this location. Why, I find your questioning of our intentions insulting and homophobic.”

He got a spot on Beck talking about this and it was pretty damn funny.

I guess it depends on when you believe this country was "founded". If you're trying to sell me on this country being tolerant on religious, I can point to about 100 examples of intolerance...during colonization or pre-Constitution. This country was founded by religious radicals who were kicked out of Great Britain for being intolerant.

Personally, I have no problem with American Muslims. I just don't think it's a good idea to build this mosque in that location. It's sort of like the Dome of the Rock next to the Western Wall next to the spot where Jesus was crucified. How did that work out for all of them?
