surferskin 30 Posted March 20, 2006 Hi Yanks, I thought you all would like to see the real figuresfrom Down Under. It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by a new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by our own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars. The first year results are now in: Australia-wide, homicides are up 6.2 percent, Australia-wide, assaults are up 9.6 percent ; Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)! In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent. (Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not! and criminals still possess their guns!) While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months, since the criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed. There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the elderly, while the resident is at home. Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was expended in "successfully ridding Australian society of guns." You won't see this on the American evening news or hear your governor or members of the State Assembly disseminating this information. The Australian experience speaks for itself. Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws affect only the law-abiding citizens. Take note Americans, before it's too late! what do you think about this you bed wetting libs?
hoytdwow 202 Posted March 20, 2006 Who gives a $#@! about gun control in Australia?
DuckStupid 40 Posted March 20, 2006 Yeah, taking guns out of law abiding citizens hands does absolutely nothing. I've argued this in the past.
phillybear 364 Posted March 20, 2006 I think that Camden, New Jersey has been voted the most violent city in the United States over the last few years. I believe they have a ban on guns, for what it's worth.

paulinstl 295 Posted March 20, 2006 Spam email sucks especially when it's as completely bogus as this one. Don't you check this stuff out before you post it? You should!
Recliner Pilot 61 Posted March 21, 2006 As bogus as the original source for this thread is, let me add this: How many gun crimes were committed in NYC over the past year?...............should be ZERO according to the logic of gun banners. How many gun cirmes were committed in DC over the past year?................should be ZERO according to the logic of gun banners. What happened to the crime rate involving guns once Texas passed our Conceal and Carry laws.............gun crimes plummeted. It may sound simple, but the bumper sticker that says "If you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns" has been proven to be true accross the country. naomi 343 Posted March 21, 2006 What exactly is an open letter anyway? Letter you write to someone but publically share with others, I think. So usually to someone important. Sean Penn wrote one to President Bush that circulated the net for a while. another open letter example Thought long and hard for a sarcastic angle in that question, 'surely he's not really asking'

FunkyMcCool 0 Posted March 21, 2006 As a liberal I agree with the sentiment of RP and other cons on this thread. While I abhor gun violence as much as anyone, banning guns across America at this point in our history would be the equivilent of shutting the barn door after the horses have run out. I'm smart enough (or dumb enough?) to admit that I don't have the answer for curing the plague of gun violence in this country, but I DO know that blanket gun prohibition simply will not work. It didn't (doesn't) work for drugs and it won't for guns either.
hoytdwow 202 Posted March 21, 2006 I'm all for people toting guns around. Just remember: It's rude to wear your spurs at the dinner table.
Jim Mora 26 Posted March 22, 2006 An interesting letter...and while I disagree with any appeal of the Second Amendment, most of that letter is bogus. "Facts are stubborn things, but statistics are more pliable."
