peenie 2,005 Posted March 20, 2006 what is the difference between the different car races and why is nascar considered red neckie?

jerryskids 7,195 Posted March 20, 2006 In one they turn left a lot, and in the other they turn left a lot. Seriously: the cars are different; Indy has open wheels and looks like what you traditionally think of as "race cars." NASCAR are stock cars, visually look more like normal street cars. NASCAR is considered red-necky because the vast majority of races over the years have been in the southeast, and their following was primarily rednecks. That is changing some as the popularity grows though.
hoytdwow 202 Posted March 20, 2006 Rednecks are the only people stupid enough to cheer near-fatal car crashes.
George Carlin 1 Posted March 20, 2006 It all depends on which one drives more miles in the circle.
SigEp316 0 Posted March 20, 2006 long story... open wheel drivers are douches until they come to Nascar and dominate....then they're the uber
Slruc 0 Posted March 20, 2006 Anyone can drive nascar/stockcar You have to be athletic to drive indy/formula1 HTH. BTW- Nascar is considered redneck b/c most drivers are uneducated.
EMoney 0 Posted March 20, 2006 Open wheel is Indy. Yes. Indy sucks nowadays. Yes. F1 is the bomb. Yes. Nascar is fun for a handful of races (Talladega, Daytona, short tracks, charlotte, road courses). The rest are nearly the exact same track and some would call those snoozers. The one today is the biggest snoozer of the year to me. I hate that focking Atlanta track. I've never watched a full race. I'm sure Tony Stewart or Bobby Labonte will win it. parrot 790 Posted March 20, 2006 NASCAR is considered red-necky because the vast majority of races over the years have been in the southeast, and their following was primarily rednecks. More than just that, the origins of stock cars were with the souped-up cars used by moonshine "ridge-runners" to run shine in and out and around the south back in the day. Moonshining in the Appalachians was a pretty redneck dominated activity I think.
D'ohmer Simpson 0 Posted March 20, 2006 As others have said, NASCAR has it roots in the people that used to run moonshine throughout the southeast during prohibition. The moonshiners souped up their own stock cars so they could outrun the police cars. Eventually they started to have races amongst each other to see who had the best "souped up" stock car. These races became more and more organized and eventually the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing was formed. I'm fuzzy on the beginnings of Indy cars (the IRL?), Formula 1, etc, etc. In the earlier days of racing, the drivers actually raced on the beach in Daytona, FL. Now it's home to one of the largest tracks on the NASCAR circuit. Unlike most other sports that have their "biggest game(s)" after the season, the Daytona 500 (1st race of the season) is considered their biggest. As for the cars, NASCAR still uses what they call stock cars, but are anything but 'stock'. They only resemble the cars you and I would drive (Ford Fusion, Chevy Monte Carlo, Dodge Charger, etc.). Stock cars are heavier than Indy cars, and they are not as technologically as advanced. Pretty much anything from the south is considered, or associated with, red necks. Concrete Charlie 0 Posted March 21, 2006 By 'Daytona' i assume you mean the 24 hour race? If so, that is generally regarded as sports car racing. The races are run to a time limit (like the similar "24 hours of Lemans" or "12 hours of Sebring") and the car that covers the most miles, wins. They can have more than one driver(not at the same time, Sparky), there may be several classes of cars on the track at the same time, and there is a lot of international competition, including many American teams. There's the Grand American series, Petit Lemans series, the SCCA, etc, etc. Nascar has nothing to do with "stock" cars like the Grand National cars of yore and is more a show than a race. IRL and Champ car racing is second, or maybe third class, F1 wannabe racing.
dj_stouty 0 Posted March 21, 2006 NASCAR is not as "redneck" as it once was. The proof is in the 100s of millions of sponsor dollars the sport gets from Fortune 100 companies who want to get in front of their fans. Indy racing is F1 Lite for Americans. F1 is a snobby elitist sport.
