I’m a little bit weird when it comes to that. Like if I can trace you to me then I just can’t. One of my friends dated this girl in our HS and they were third cousins. Kept saying “it’s ok cause we are only distantly related”. But I’m over here thinking “damn y’all making southern stereotypes real “

How does one know if someone else is their 3rd cousin? I have a lot of cousins and don't even know one 2nd cousin.

3rd cousins share a great great grandparent. Second cousins share a great grandparent. I’ve got a good bit of second cousins I grew up with and still see every year

Quick story... 

Freshman year of high school, I was on the JV baseball team when a girl who was a friend of mine came over to talk to me.  After the game, one of the guys on the freshman asked if she was my girlfriend.  I told him that she wasn't and that I could try to fix him up.  They dated all throughout high school.  They found out something that they found very disturbing at her graduation party that I found to be hilarious.  Turned out that they had the same father.  The girls parents were married and both cheating on each other.  They found out when the girl the dad was cheating with, got knocked up.  Turned out, the mom was knocked up as well.  Parents got divorced and her mom told the guy she was cheating with, that he was the father.  Father was in the Air Force and got stationed in Kansas City, so he left with the other girl that he knocked up and later married.

About 13 years later, the father gets stationed in NJ... not knowing that his ex moved there 6 years earlier, and in the same town.  Because the girl lived across the street from me, we became friends.  That's how come I was able to introduce them to each other.  At her graduation party, it was the first time that the guys dad was around at the same time her mother was... and when they met... fireworks erupted.  I laughed my azz off.  Half brother and half sister were banging for about 2 years when they found out!

I decided to share this.  I don't think this counts... but I guess it does.  I met this girl at a party when I was 22.  We'd never met each other, but we got along pretty well.  Had sex that night and a few other times, probably about 7 or 8 times in total.  After that little run, we didn't see each other for 10 years.  We met again at a family reunion.  Found out that we're like 5th or 6th cousins... or something like that.  My great grandmother and her great grandfather were brother and sister.
