Recidivist 1 Posted April 28, 2006 Throughout college I subsidized my lifestyle by transporting a smorgasboard of party favors. I had a hidden compartment in my trunk and under the back seat. Product almost always went northbound and the cash always came back south. On this particular evening, I had several thousand in cash and a few oz. of weed and an oz. or so of blow I was bringing to a friend in North Palm Beach. My friend ended up taking only half of the weed and no blow. We partied for a bit and I left to go down to Fort Lauderdale. I broke my cardinal rule of not speeding while holding. Just before the West Palm service plaza on the turnpike, my radar detector went off. I was soon pulled over by a Florida Highway Patrolman and a Palm Beach County Sheriff. My windows were down, and as I came to a stop, I could hear a police dog barking his head off in one of the cop cars. All my cash and contraband were in a duffel bag on the back seat. The FHP asked me to get out of the car and come to the rear of my vehicle. He advised me he clocked me doing 81 in a 65. He further advised they were doing drug interdiction that evening, hence the PB Sheriff and his dog. They asked what I was doing and told them I was headed home after visiting a college buddy of mine in North Palm. He asked what college and I said U of FL. Luckily, they were Gator fans. He asked if I had any drugs in the car and I of course said no. The dog was still in the car and going nuts. I played it cool and they just gave me a written warning for speeding. Just a few weeks earlier, I had gotten my hair cut (it was halfway down my back) and had really close cropped hair. My guess is that if I still had my long hair, they would have brought the dog out and I would have been popped with a couple felonies.

parrot 790 Posted April 28, 2006 Dude, share your story. We missed a corner on a steep mountain road (he was driving way too fast naturally). There was a clearing about thirty yards wide where we went off with one tree in it and nothing else for about 200-300 straight down to the bottom of the canyon. The truck went over on it's nose and started to slide down the hill on the cab and hood. The nose of the truck hit that one focking tree dead center. It was pretty scary at the time, but seeing it later in the daylight it was positively terrifying.
shovelheadt 72 Posted April 28, 2006 While pulling comm support for a DEA mission in Nicaragua. Sniper started taking pot shots at the convoy. You could hear two little 'tings' as the bullets hit a couple of the vehicles. Next thing you know, every Army dude in the convoy either rolled out of his vehicle or popped up through a hummer turret and started unleashing holy hell in the direction of the shots. Now imagine two AF guys that have a sole purpose of providing comm support. Not only had we never seen combat, it had been years since we'd fired a weapon. Sure, they issued us 16s and 9s but what were the odds of having to use them. Both of us rolled out the passenger's door of our vehicles, fell onto the ground then huddled up behind the tire. Once every few seconds, I'd raise my arm over the hood and pop off a shot or two from the 9 in what I thought was the general direction that everyone else was firing towards. After it was all over, some Army Captain pulled us aside and said something to effect of "I realize you guys don't deal with this sort of thing, but at least take your 16s with you the next time you evacuate a vehicle". golden eagles 0 Posted April 28, 2006 Was rafting down the Cheat River with some friends from NoVa. We get to one of the last rapids, the only Class 5 of the trip. The rest had been 2-4 and had been no problem for us. The guide stopped us a few hundred yards from the rapids & said "you guys have done pretty good, nobody's been dumped so far, but if you hit this rapid at anything but 100%, you'll never make it." I remember a couple of guys saying it'll be no problem. We get just to the point of entry & the guide yells out "YOU GUYS ARE FOCKED!!" Immediately, everyone on the left side of the raft goes into the rapid. Since I was #2 man on the left side, I'm now underwater in a Class 5. I literally felt like I was in a washing machine & I was underwater for what seemed like forever getting bounced around. I remember reaching my hand out for surface & the guys in the kayaks said they seen my hand come out of the water. Then, the rapid spit me out & the life vest brought me to the top. The kayakers were screaming at me to swim to the shore, but I was disoriented & was letting the rapid throw me around. Ironically, our raft had gotten stuck on the rocks & I floated right to it. I grabbed on, but the current was trying to pull me under the boat. One of my buddies grabbed me by the back of the vest, but he had wrenched his ankle playing b-ball & was having trouble holding on. The only part of me not underwater and under the boat was my head & I'm yelling, "Jeff, don't you fockin let me go" & he's just about to lose me when the guide, who had just pulled in one of the other guys in the back, jumps to the front & helps him get me in. The other two ended up in other boats & the guide pushes us off the rock & we ride out the rest of the rapid. We get to calm water & getting regrouped & I'm really screwed up by the whole thing. Someone asks me how I am & all I can say is "The thing sucked my fockin shoes off" Never been rafting again...

BiPolarBear 497 Posted April 28, 2006 "I have a stack of nudie books THIS high." ...how high is the stack of straight nudie mags? When we lived in Iran, it was during the revolution. Gun shot noises, strict curfew, and every main street armed with a teenage soldier with a rifle of some sort. One night coming back from my aunt's house, we were stopped by one of these soldiers who at the time was my age. He asked what we were doing out when curfew is in a few minutes. He made all of us get out of the car, searched it for weapons, alcohol, drugs, whatever... I thought this is it! We are going to prison cuz now it is midnight! Focker held us up long enough so now we were past curfew, and still had some major streets to cross in order to get home. We got home ok, but later that same night I saw a man get shot in the leg outside my window. He was prolly drunk or not all there cuz he wasn't acknowledging the warnings. Every night back then was gun shots. We'd also lose electricity a lot at night too. Many times we would just all gather in a family member's house by kerosene lamp and play cards. We tried to get out, mainly because I had been going to the american school there which of course closed and if I had to now go to a persian school, I'd be like in elementary school because my reading and writing of farsi wasn't kept up as well once I learned english. It took 5 months for my family who had high contacts to work it so my mom, bro, and I could get out via the underground route. They couldn't do anything about my dad. He was highly educated and at that time they needed folks like that, despite my dad also being an american citizen. Over there, you are still a citizen there even if you have citizenship in another country. So we got out and it was another 3 months till my dad was snuck out via the underground- 3 months of agony thinking dad will get caught and killed. This was my scariest experience, the thought of my dad getting killed because we kept hearing how so and so was killed for trying to get out. The part of my dad is prolly tied with when my mom and I were in a car accident that about killed us. I didn't much care about myself as I came to first, but my mom was unconscious too long and we were told she prolly wouldn't make it. For me, nothing was worse than feeling your parents may die, especially as a teenager with a much younger bro to boot. My own near death experience didn't scare me because while I was pronounced dead for like 2 minutes, I was so at peace. So I have no fear of dying when it's my time. Sorry for you guys though, it's not just yet it seems. Curly, Did you feel a little scared everyday not knowing what might happen to you in Iran? Is there a difference in how you feel here? I heard one time that Americans might ask for a pile of money or good health if they could wish for anything. I heard that the most common answer around the world was "political freedom". What do you think?

CurlyNight 0 Posted April 28, 2006 ...how high is the stack of straight nudie mags? Curly, Did you feel a little scared everyday not knowing what might happen to you in Iran? Is there a difference in how you feel here? I heard one time that Americans might ask for a pile of money or good health if they could wish for anything. I heard that the most common answer around the world was "political freedom". What do you think? Up until the revolution, no worries over there for me or my family. In fact, it was a blast living over there before the nutjobs took over. There was a lot more freedom to do things there than there is here (well if you have the dough). It was when we were getting ready to get out via the underground that yeah, it was scary. As for the rest, during and for a few years after was a different story for my family. My grandfather on my mom's side was a luitenent general in the Shah's army, which was high up position to be in. Unlike here, folks in the army that are high up are given their big nice homes, maids, cooks, etc along with a nice salary, so you were styling in those days. Also a couple of my grandmother's brothers held government positions during the Shah years. When the revolution happened, they went into hiding so the crackpot mullahs wouldn't capture them and put them in front of the firing squad. They didn't do anything except work for the Shah's government. My grandparents came here to escape and could because my mom had gotten them green cards back in the 70s. The rest of the gang who worked for that gov were stuck there because getting visas/green cards became hell no once you were identified as an Iranian. Luckily though they were able to keep a low profile because thankfully the government benefits and salaries were never cut so they just had to focus on keeping a low profile. My grandfather on my dad's side owned a ton of land and businesses. A few of them got torched because the farmers and whatnot saw this as an opportunity to revolt as well just cuz. They were actually paid pretty well and had their little homes near the land, but who knows why folks just lose it and go nutty like that. To answer your second querry, personally I'd have to disagree with the polital freedom over money and health. Over there and in such countries, if you have money, they leave you alone and you really aren't suffering. Money talks. You got it and you can afford to pay for the things that are considered part of daily living here from meat to dvds. What the gov does won't pertain to you if you can pay for what you need to have things. Health is pretty obvious because if you don't have good health, then really nothing matters in life. Here's another reason why I am not one who would be screaming "political freedom" if I was still there. As we saw with Iraq, just because you get 'democracy' somewhat established there, doesn't mean the leader is going to be any better than what they had. In fact, it's usually the same or worse as things tend to go in that part of the world. One thing could be solved and another big headache is in it's place. That's why I was never for a war. I'm glad Sadam got caught and is getting his, but to say the Iraqies are all rejoicing is ludicrous because they still have a big mess but of a different type. You soon forget what it was like before and just focus on the current problems, and tend to see these as 'worse' that big one that was just solved. That country or any of them there, will never be like a US government (which is what all the civilians want) and bombing folks, most of whom are civilian and innocent, is so not right. You can't impose your beliefs on how things should be onto a group of nations that have a such a different belief system that goes back to near the dinosaur age. It's impossible, and yes it's sad for those who are trapped, but there is nothing you can do to maybe make it better after spending tons of $s and killing thousands and thousands of innocent people in the process. The leaders in power have money and the resources to keep going. You can toss out the current regime but the next one in line is another one like them who is powerful enough and has lots and lots of money to survive it all. That's why I don't see those nations ever becoming "US like." So the unfortunate thing for me and my family over here is many are stuck in Iran. Some come and go to visit, but those who never got visas before sh1t hit the fan are hosed- and we will never see them again. What can you do? What can they do? You just have to live your life and them their lives the best we all can under all circumstances.
Bill E. 703 Posted April 28, 2006 I had three close calls that I will not forget. The worst one was when I was diving inside a wreck that sat sideways 120 feet down. I was three rooms deep in the wreck and my high pressure hose got caught in a support beam or something behind me. I was trying to swim out of the wreck and could not move. I was stuck and my movement was kicking up silt so my visability was going. I started feeling the hoses coming off my regulator and one was going straight up. I got it untangled, but could not see a thing. I found the door and remember swimming out of the other two rooms. My buddy was outside the wreck and said I came flying out like a missle. I had been trained for this kind of wreck diving but it was an especially hazardous wreck because of the depth and the fact that it was on its side. I dove it several more times but never went inside. This was 7 or 8 years ago, but I remember it like it was yesterday. It is easy to see how people panic in those situations and if I had I would have died.

The people in the Shah's government sure didn't deserve to live life like they did in hiding. I'm glad folks still remember him over there. CantTouchThis 23 Posted April 29, 2006 Well, one pretty recent. Was last year, late April, and there waas a very late season snowstorm in Michigan, all throughout michigan. We were going up to the soo(Sault Ste. marie, about 5 hours from Detroit) to pick up my bro from college. I was only 15 at the time, only had my permit, but, my mom let me drive all the way up, or ,at least she was going to. Of course, i was going between 80 and 85(my mom freaks out if i go over 80, but, 79.9 is perfectly fine, 80.1, freak out) The snow wasn't too heavy, roads were just wet. Anyways, we were just passing gaylord on 75, and the snow got heavier. The roads still looked only wet for the most part with some slushy spots. Now, this part of 75, they don't salt. Then, we went over an overpass, i hit a patch of black ice...going 80 mph, lost control immediately. We slammed into the side rail, did several complete 360s, slammed into the other side rail, final gained back control, and of course pulled to the side. The car was still drivable(banged up though) mom got bad whip lash, i was fine. Luckily, there weren't many cars on the road, it would've been MUCH, MUCH worse if we hit another car or two, don't think we would've made it out as well. thsi was the first car crash i was ever in, and i was driving, with my permit. haven't gotten into accident since then, and have never been pulled over in about hte year i have had my liscenes, so, it made me be more cautious on the road, so, maybe a blessing in disquise. OakHeadFootball 1 Posted April 29, 2006 Went out deer hunting with a friend one day, right before sunset I walk back to my truck to find my buddy in the drivers seat with the engine running and he is franticly waving for me to hurry up. Start to unload my gun and he is freaking out telling me to get in. So against my better judgment I hop in and say "WTF!?" as he is driving like a bat out of hell to get out of there. He says to me, I ran into someone in the woods and they started following me, blah, blah, blah and he got freaked out. So before he even finishes the story we are back at my appartment. Cycled my bolt before I got out of the truck to make sure I was empty. Walked up to my door with my hands full. Handed my rifle to my friend with the muzzle pointed to the ground so I could get my house keys out. He Grabs it from me, close to the trigger, and yup KABOOOOOM. Friend just shot himself in the foot with a loaded high power rifle I just handed him on my doorstep in a small housing complex. Ohh shi Concrete chips flying everywhere... Friend howling hopping around on one foot. Neigbors running for cover. Yup I was freaked. Couldnt get my door open, must have tried every key twice. They just didn't seem to fit Friend is now unsucesfully trying to smash the door down with his body weight. Had to run to the neighbors house to tell them to call 911 my friend has been shot. They didn't want to even open the door, not that I could blame them. Went back, finaly got my door open now that I am regaining my composure a little. To make matters even worse the paramedics, who are litteraly across the street at the fire station, wouldn't respond until the State Police cleared the scene. Took them about 20 minutes to get there all the while I am hugging my buddy on my kitchen floor trying to keep him calm. Yup pretty freaked out that day. My friend got lucky. The bullet snuck between 2 bones in the top of his foot. Left a good 2 in exit wound in the bottom of his foot and took alot of meat with it, but he has recovered. If it hit bone he would probably be missing part of his foot. Apparently the rifles bolt didn't hook into the rim of the bullet so it didn't eject it like it should have, still, no excuses for this type of accident. No charges were filed. State Police took my rifle for "evidence" got it back in a couple of weeks. What a feeling walking out of the cop shop with a scoped .308 Win.
