volleyball hitting and serving? I was talking to a bunch of people (admittedly all players) and we all thought it would be pretty cool.

Basically you would have a cash prize for whomever had the fastest serve, bounced a hit the highest (standardized ball weight and pressure), etc.

You could extend it to setting for accuracy and some other stuff, but the hitting comp we all thought would be a legitimate draw for 'regular folks' that have only thought of the sport as a recreational family barbecue thing. A lot of guys can bounce it over 50 feet from a middle hit with no block. It sound like a gunshot when it hits the floor. With the right pre-event hype I really think it would do well. Especially if they had 'guest appearances' from stars in other sports that tried the different things so people had a frame of reference as to the level of skill needed to do it.

What do you think?

No.

Vollyball doesn't require any skill

See, this is the kind of nonsense talk the show could end.

I can't think of a sport that requires more skill to play, except maybe hockey since you have to know how to skate well to even attempt it.

I'm not saying it doesn't require skill, but exactly how much could you possibly do in a contest?

Maybe only if it involved WOMEN'S v-ball. And then only maybe.

Sure, there would be a women's bracket. Unfortunately the hottest women are setters (generally). The chicks that really bang the ball are generally somewhat beastly.

Are you focking kidding me? Vollyball requires more skill to play than baseball? Hitting a 103mph ball with a focking stick?

C'mon, that's a bit of a stretch. I can step onto any v-ball court and hold my own. Get the ball over the net every time with an overhand serve, come up with a few blocks and can set at will. Only thing I can't do regularly is spike. The same rules do not apply to many other sports.

Only VB players would watch..

No one else really gives a rats a$$.

Also, I have to disagree with you that vb takes some of the most skill. It takes lot of skill, but certainly not the most besides hockey. I'd have to go with baseball on that one, the eye hand coordination needed to hit a fast ball is incredible.

Plenty:

fastest jump serve (using speed gun)

jump serve for accuracy (minimum speed required with targets)

highest bounce from a hit

highest bounce from back row attack hit

setting for accuracy into buckets from distances

Hell, basketball does it with just 3-point shooting and the dunk competition, and I would honestly say that a volleyball highest bounce competition would be more exciting to watch that a dunk-off.

If memory serves me well, I remember reading some articles in college for a class I had. It said hitting a curve ball was the single hardest thing to do in all of sports.

ETA: It may have been just hitting a pitched ball, but for some reason I want to say 'curve ball'.

Volleyball is played in every gym class in America, because it's easy.

Especially if its a bender like barry zito's after he gave you a fastball.

Thats because you play, I only play recreationally, and I still wouldn't give a schit. I would only tune in to see the chicks in those tight shorts, then I'm outta there.

I could step ontp a basketball/baseball/soccer/football field at a lowish-mid level and not completely embarass myself and I don't rellay play those sports. If you take a non-volleyball player and put them onto a lowish-mid level court, they would be seriously embarrassed - I'm not kidding.

Anyone can throw, catch, run, etc. Just learning to do a basic pass consistently takes quite a bit of practice.

Only top players can hit a 103 MPH fast ball in baseball(can anyone even throw that fast?). Only top players can dig an 80MPH hit in volleyball. BUT a lot of people can hit a 60mph 'fastball'. Not many can dig a slowish volleyball hit.

I can throw faster than 60 and I am willing to bet you would not be able to hit against me or my 2 brothers. All 3 of us were pitchers in high school. Sitting on a fastball would get you struck out quick as you would get a bender or a knuckle. And 60 is way low for anything below maybe a 10th grader unless you did in fact get a knuckleball. Baseball is BY FAR harder than VB.

Obsolete at the high school level. And almost as rare in college!

If you can hit a pitch one out of, let's say 45 pitches, you are considered to be "successful". In order to be considered a good passer, you have to be able to successfully pass arould 40 of 45 serves to the correct position.

And the guy that hits a baseball that well (.300 average) has to do what else - throw and catch. The guy that has to pass the serves also has to block and hit. Blocking isn't that hard, but hitting is way more skill intensive than throwing.

.300 would be 3 out of 10 am I correct? So hitting 1 out of 45 in no way would be considered successful.

If you hit 1 out of 45 pitches, you'd end up on the volleyball circuit, no doubt!

For sure. But after throwing a fastball, that is a pitch that can fock a hitter up. Hell it has led to the knightmares of many catchers. I agree that is it not a pitch you see often but thats why our dad wanted us to be able to throw it and lord willing if i have a son I will teach him.

IF you can learn to throw a great knuckler, and have the confidence to throw it on a 3-2 count, it is a devastating pitch! Very few can do it! Neikro's, Wake, Springer, there are others, but that is my point. Hard to master.

I've played on a few competitive (rec) teams, grass and sand, the last couple of years. I've been to an AVP event and really enjoy watching volleyball. I go to the park and play with random friends of people that set up and think they don't need skill. They have horrible form and illegally hit, pass, usually hang in the net, and they still get schooled by a team of good players.

But to answer your question... No I would not want to watch a skills competition. That would be very boring and I would much rather watch a match.

I actually play volleyball. I don't find that it takes that much skill. I started playing beach volleyball seriously 3 years ago and now I can play in semi-pro tournaments and hold my own.

That is true. My point though was that hitting a fastball is not Sh!t. That is what you are EXPECTED to hit. its when you mix in the other pitches. The bender, the sinker, (the knuckle in my case) The slider, these pitches are all ones that are not easy to hit. And I would put the skills to hit the pitches up there with digging or setting or spiking anyday. Not to mention that playing the field is not as easy as it may look.

You're kind of right, if you are athletic and you play regulary with good people, I will admit its a lot easier to pick up then golf. I've been playing about two or three years and can hold my own too. Now if I got on the court with a pro, like any sports really, I would be toast.

Yeah, if you got only one pitch per at-bat

I've played semi-pro for about 10-12 years and at my best was winning smaller open level grass tourneys. But in the grand scheme of things, I'd say I was, at my absolute best, an 8 out of 10 on grass, and indoors MAYBE an 7.5 as a setter only, probably around a 6 or 6.5 hitting outside. I'm sure if I worked at any sport for 3 years I could 'hold my own' playing aginst semi-pro competition.

I still say hitting, passing, setting, blocking, serving and digging are harder skills to learn that throwing, catching, pitching and batting taking them all into account.

Ooh... I forgot about golf. I put that above volleyball as well.

Interesting question, so I looked it up. Apparently Mark Wohlers reached 103 in spring training in '95, and several other pitchers have gotten it to 102. I've seen Wagner hit 101. Anecdotal evidence has some older players getting to 107, but I highly doubt that.
