Charles Rogers / Mike Williams: Millen's says team not afraid to get rid of EITHER

Recommended Posts

Lions WRs Williams and Rogers must atone for their past mistakes

NICHOLAS J. COTSONIKA

7/27/2006

Starting today, when they report to training camp with their teammates, wide receivers Charles Rogers and Mike Williams have to do what is expected of them.

Rogers and Williams will be competing with Roy Williams, Corey Bradford, Mike Furrey, Scottie Vines, Glenn Martinez and Eddie Drummond. And not just for playing time. For roster spots.

Millen insisted the Lions could cut Rogers or Williams, regardless of draft status, financial commitment or salary-cap implications.

"I think we would be willing to cut anybody," Millen said. "I think we just have to be. There's realities of where we're at, but ... everybody has a chance to define what they are. Here we go."

Coach-speak, GM-speak, whatever you want to call it, but these are very interesting comments.

From fanball:

Lions: Millen praises Rogers

07/27/06 12:22 PM

THE NEWS

Lions general manager Matt Millen offered a glowing review of wide receiver Charles Rogers performance during the offseason workouts. "He was catching everything with his hands," Millen told Thursday's Detroit Free Press. "He was running excellent routes. He was going full speed all the time." Rogers finished last season with 14 receptions for 197 yards and one touchdown.

Our View

The Lions brass still hasn't forgiven sophomore receiver Mike Williams for skipping rehab assignments this spring, so it looks like Rogers could have the inside track to winning the No. 2 receiver job. We'll keep an eye on this training camp battle throughout the summer.

Make up your mind, Millen!

Detroit is going to be a total disaster this season. There is absolutely nothing positive you can say about that team except that they play in a weak division.

exactly. this is what i've been saying all along: these guys have this year to prove themselves. notice the lions aren't cutting anyone NOW. know why? because they'll get this new opportunity to prove themselves.

in other words, as i've said all along: give mike this year before passing a final judgment.

:thumbsup:

rogers has been getting glowing reviews all summer. how is it inconsistent to say he's been doing well but that he has to keep it up because he's out of chances?

Something tells me one of these dudes will be gone at some point before the season. The Lions currently have at least 8 WRs on their roster; not many teams go into a season with more than 6. So let's take inventory:

Roy Williams = roster spot secure

Eddie Drummond = thanks to his return skills, roster spot secure

Corey Bradford = the organization likes him; signed as the team's first free agent this off season; spot secure

Scottie Vines = won over many team observers last year with top notch work ethic; spot secure

Mike Furrey = Hand-picked Martz guy; if he performs half-way decently, he should make it

Glenn Martinez = classic hardworking overachiever; practice squad fodder

Which leaves....Ginger Rogers and FMW. My money would be on Rogers getting the boot, since they'd take less of a cap hit with that move. The ironic part about that is, from a pure talent standpoint, Rogers may very well be the most talented of 'em all.

vines worked hard last year, but i'd hardly say his spot is secure. it's a clean slate for everyone this year--including vines. he's nobody's pet on the current coaching staff.

i cant see Furrey being much of a factor at all, he was playing safety for the Rams so that indicates something about his abilities to play out wide

no matter what Millen says they wont take a huge hit to get rid of these guys, they screwed up enough it seems by picking them and i cant see them being that boneheaded to drop them and screw it up even more

Vines = cut

Furrey = S

Martinez = cut

Williams

Williams

Bradford

Rogers

Drummond

they could even keep Vines if they wanted 6

<_< It's really not. I just thought it was funny to hear both reports in the same day.

Behind the scenes: Vartan Kupelian and Mike O'Hara

Charles Rogers' career with the Lions has been on a treadmill the last two years. And somebody pulled the plug. He has gone nowhere.

There were broken collarbones in 2003 and '04, and a four-game suspension last season for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy.

By the end of last season, Rogers ranked fourth or fifth among the Lions wide receivers, and there was a time this offseason when he might not have been that high on the pecking order.

That has changed. Rogers recently bought a treadmill. It is not a sign of a career that had come to a rest, but an indication Rogers has recommitted himself to being a productive player.

You know they're stretching to say something positive when they remark on the fact an NFL player finally broke down and bought a treadmill. Where's Mike Williams' treadmill? Well, that answer is simple. He's too busy eating to buy one.

Agree with most of your post except for the word "maybe."

:clap: So true. Rogers and FMW will likely be safe for this season, they need the depth. But this is probably it, at least for Rogers.

According to this article...Charles Rogers has impressed and Mike Williams has not. Rogers could be a deep sleeper.

When camp opens, Millen expects four Lions to be on the physically-unable-to-perform list -- Bailey (left ankle - 310 lbs), Lehman (right foot - 290 lbs), tight end Dan Campbell (elbow - 345 lbs) and wide receiver Scottie Vines (groin - 265 lbs).

Bunch of fat lazy asses. Tsk tsk. :banana:

these guys were hurt on the football field--not by having a trainer grab their legs :banana:

Apparently you don't understand that a physical involves running. Of course it comes as no shock that you're speaking about something you don't understand.

Let me get this straight: Millen spends a first round pick on a WR 3 years in a row, then in year 4 he picks up a WR to kick off the year's free agent season?!?!?!

Pure genius, that Matt Millen. :banana:
