How do you guys feel about bringing a laptop to your draft?

Recommended Posts

A few years ago I brought my laptop to our draft and pretty much everyone made fun of me. It was a good time, but I haven't brought it for the last couple of years. I am thinking of taking it again this year, so that I can use the draft buddy. I was just wondering how you guys feel about bringing laptops to the draft?

I dont have a problem with it. I actually would prefer it if people brought a lap top. We do a live draft on the internet though with some people present at my house, some people not.

Gotta do it! ;) Of course, if you finished close to the bottom the last year you brought it, be prepared for more teasing.

For me its a must have. There's just no way I can keep all my research organized without having my spreadsheets setup on my laptop at the draft.

If it helped- bring it.

If you brought it cause you thought it was cool- they're going to crack on you again and probably distract you.

Looks like it couldn't have been much help since you've gone without it for the past couple of years.

We've got a big ass draft board. I just do my homework, and bring my own rankings to the draft.

Actually this is one of the times you want to invest in draft magazines. find teh worst one. Hand it out to the other members in your draft. Tell them it's a good way to mark off who has been taken. Then let psychology do the rest. The'll see xxx bad player is ranked so high and start to wonder why no one is taking them. Then they will feel it is a steel and have to take him.

You on the other hand bring your pla top and the draft buddy and

I don't see why they'd make fun of you. It would be a good idea, and help you keep organized. However, I wouldn't risk it, some drafts can get kind of messy and your CPU may end up with some spilled beer on it. Just a thought.

I brought mine last year, and like you, was made fun of. But because I charted the entire draft using the Buddy, the commissioner frantically emailed me when he dropped his draft board and all the names of players fell off. I simply emailed him what I had input and literally saved his arse. I'll bring it again this year but the new commish has already asked me to back up the board with my data so no jokes this year!

You know, I finally got one of those Draft Predictor programs this year - and have practiced using it, it seems ok - but it looks like it's sort of a pain in the ass to use during a draft. We have a draft board with stickers that we rotate who puts the stickers on, people trade players/picks - it just seems easier to me to just go off the draft board and your own rankings printouts. I don't want to have be chained to the laptop the entire draft to make sure each pick is input.

We run an auction league, and with the draft buddy it will be really easy to just spit out the cap room for each team. So as a means of backing up the commish, I think it will be really handy. I didn't really think of that aspect of it.

Also, the place where we have our draft has wireless high speed, just in case there are any recent injuries. One year we were drafting and watching a preseason game on the big screen when Trent Green tore his ACL on the Rams. The guy who had drafted him about 10 minutes earlier was pissed.

rather have a lap dance than a laptop, though one could be distracting when drafting

 I'm with you. Seems to me that if one is organized, it would be more trouble than it's worth. But, I would not laugh at anyone who did. I might give him some shiat just to try to throw him off. Take it back, I would definately give him some shiat.

I've caught a few jokes for doing it the past couple of years, but since I kicked everyone's ass last year, I think I'll have more of a problem with people looking over my shoulder to figure out what exactly I'm doing on it than dealing with any jokesters.

I've taken mine a few times, it comes in handy for deep drafts, much more current for deep picks than the mags

Great for Commish also to log everything into our FF site

Laptop + excel + projector = nice draft board for everyone to use

Shovel - I thought about doing this as I have a projector and large pull down screen - but I didn't think it would be easy to read. Do you have a certain file setup to make the picks or how do you do it?

Made fun of you? Whatever. I've brought mine to the draft for several years in a row. Wouldn't draft without! Let those punks clutch their fantasy mag while you use your cpu!

Nothing wrong with that. I never have, but I have seen others do it. They are able to keep a lot of information handy on it.

This is the year 2006. Computers have been around for many years and are fair game. The people that don't want you to use a laptop probably still want to use USA Today each week to calculate the scores. They feel using that new invention called the "Internet" doesn't give the same personal touch.

The people who are "making fun of you" or intimidated. I bring mine an give to host crap if he doesn't have wireless internet. It won't be long until everyone brings a laptop.

I'll be bringing mine for year 3 this year. At first guys snickered and laughed at me a bit, until I gave them a short little show of what the Draft Buddy can do. They soon realized it was way easier and more organized than crossing off a paper.

I still print out my cheatsheets, etc. in case of power or cpu problems.

every draft is so similar, with everyone having very similar information and rankings, that I find the laptop cumbersome. I play in several espn leagues and have for some time that when i get to my $$$ leagues, I dont even need paper let alone a laptop

plus, after the 1st 5-6 rounds, you will have the core of your team and be looking for players that have good matchups for when your stubs have byes., and sleepers too

A few of my friends bring their laptops and it works out fine for them and I don't have a problem with them wanting to use it. Whatever works best for them.

Do whatever it takes to give you an edge over your opponents, if bringing a laptop would help at all, do it and don't give a flip what they say.

i don't really see the difference between organized paperwork and a laptop. on my excel printouts, i have my rankings that i update daily, SOS for each position for regular season and playoffs, OL rankings for RBs, projected points, ADP, auction values, consistency ranking percentages, bye weeks, and my personal notes.

I just highlight and go on to my next pick. i used a laptop three years ago and the draft was to fast as i was going from workbook to workbook. i am a little old school though.

I am contemplating using one this year, as this may be my first year using Complier and DB. I took 2nd two years ago and won it all last year without it. Did alot of research, but I am not the most organized person. Papers were everywhere.

But I have a little problem with buddies at the draft asking my questions on who to get with their pick. A few years ago, he was looking for a TE, and I gave him Gates (relative unknown). Problem was that I was going to draft him myself. The real problem is that I am a real nice guy by nature, always giving help to those who ask for it. And I know if they see my laptop and FFT spreadsheets, it would be "Hey what does your sheet say I should go for next?, Can I take a look at your laptop?"

I am a nice guy but this stuff really  What do you guys do in this situation?

I bring a laptop every year. It helps to keep things organized and it makes it easier for me to record who goes in what round. I got laughed at last year as well, but I anticipate less laughs after winning the championship! :first:

Nothing special. I only use it to record everyone's picks so you don't have people yelling "who did he just pick". I keep a separate sheet for my use.

I just use multiple tabs at the bottom of the sheet. You figure you won't have any more than 16 rows going down the left side (1 row for each draft position). You can set this part up before the draft with team names beside each pick.

Then at the top, you'd have a different column for each round. You can comfortably fit about 5 or 6 rounds on each sheet, then kick over to another tab.

If someone needs info from 4 rounds ago, either click over to the previous tab or just biatch slap him for not paying attention.

First off I'll reply to original poster. NO I have no problems with laptops at draft. I use Draft Buddy to keep up with everyones picks. I am commish and find this to be a very useful tool.

I'm in a work re-draft league. Every year we have 1 or 2 new guys because someone has moved on to other jobs or quit/fired. Well the last 3 years the new guys have been FF rooks who only agree to be in the league so that thye will fit in witht he group. They don't know sh!t from shinola and constantly ask me what they need or who's the best WR left.

Since they are rooks and have never played I will try and help when I can. Particularly if they are going for something I do not need i.e. I already have my 3 RBs and he needs one next.

BUT if they do this starting round one and continue through the entire draft I will not be as helpful. I'll not suggest to a rook a player I am targeting for a late round sleeper pick or especially an obvious pick that anyone with half a brain would know to pick.

HTH

False info. "I'm really stoked about Reggie Kelly this year, he should be huge for the Bengals."

As long as you're not holding everything up at the draft by looking through things on the laptop when it's your turn, go ahead and bring it.

Hand him the SI fantasy football issue. It sucks, he'll make a bad pick, yet he'll still think your a nice guy anyway.
