that's only because every single eagle fan had to replace their TO jersey.

Hey surferskin, I want to apologize for some of the stuff I posted the other day. You've actually made me laugh a couple times this week.

I have a Dawkins jersey too  Unfortunately he's lost a step, but when you're Dawkins that still means you're pretty damn good.

I see the Eagles again, but let's see here..............wait, I'm looking for it......nope, no mention of the Dolphins anywhere

Again, if you think that looking at a year of merchandise sales equates to number of fans, you are mistaken.

Yeah I'm gonna attribute the lack of Dolphins merchandise sales to the fact that their colors are focking horrible. I don't think there are too many drug gangs out there that want to make turquoise and orange their "colors".

Well that's two different years now. Again, if you think anyone is going to buy your baseless claim over hard proof that the country is buying and interested in the Eagles, you are mistaken.

Hey D'umber, I did some research to try and figure out who has the largest fanbase among NFL teams. From everything I can find, it's a concensus that it's America's team, the Dallas Cowboys. A close second would be the Pittsburgh Steelers. Also found was Green Bay and Oakland. All of these franchises have a storied past and years and years of success. I should have mentioned Green Bay instead of Miami to be more accurate, but if you want to argue Miami vs Philadelphia fanbases, all I could find was a Harris poll...

1998 1999 2002 2003 2004 2005

Miami Dolphins 9 9 6 8 6 5

Philadelphia Eagles 6 3 5 5 9 10

The data only goes back to 98, but only the past 2 years have the Eagles been chosen as a more favorite team that the Dolphins, and I would attribute that to bangwagon fans due to the super bowl appearance. While both teams were doing nothing, the dolphins were voted more popular. I think it's fair to say that if you go back in time, you'll find Miami to be more popular as well going into the Shula era. That core fan base won't disappear. Maybe the Eagles are on their way to building a national fanbase, but time will tell. I doubt it, based on the stigma that the team has.

That's the best I can do to provide actual facts.

The Fins had a better record than the Iggles last year.

Yes, and no one cared.

Simply ever since Marinohomo retired - the "care level" flatlined.

How many Philly fans do you think the team has added across the country the past 4 years by losing championship games and a super bowl?

:ratsass:

No one in the Philly area cares how many fans of the Eagles are in Montana. Being the fan of the local team is a birthright. You are born in Philly, you are an Eagles fan. In Kansas City? A Chiefs fan. In Dallas? A deeldoh.

HTH

That was my point. There are Cowboy fans everywhere. There are Steeler fans everywhere. Philly fans are far and few between outside of the local area.

Oh sure, I'm not saying the Dolphins weren't popular at one time, but that time was long ago. The NFL is all about 'what have you done for me lately' and frankly the Dolphins haven't done anything, no disrespect to them, and their appeal has lessened. It's clear that from the sales of merchandise and the info above the Eagles have a much bigger appeal to the country than the Dolphins do, and as they return to the postseason again this year (barring injury) that appeal will only continue to grow.

And honestly, that is fine with me. If you are an Eagles fan in Detroit, you should have your head examined. Unless you are a transplant from the area - stick to yer Lions!

The Cowboy fans "everywhere" = front-runnin' frauds. Steeler fans everywhere = close to the same. It was funny, my father in law, a moderate sports fan asked me if I was excited about the SuperBowl, as we had to root for the Pennsylvania team. Um, no. The Steelers might as well be on Mars.

As far as the movie, as a lifelong Philly resident and Eagles fan (and owning a few Papale rookie cards - EBAY BABY!!! ) I see the Eagles angle as a bonus, I think it is an awesome human interest story - a regular guy getting an opportunity and living a dream. I think many of us working schleps would kill for that - whether it be as a Bronco, or an Eagle, or a Packer, or Cowb.. well...

The NFL is all about 'what have you done for me lately'

This is where you are wrong. The Packers and Cowboys continue to have huge national fanbases despite putting up same bad records the past few years. From the same poll they were ranked #1 and #2.

Also the Eagles will probably not make the post season this year, again.

Jesus, everything black and white with you? You could probably add Raiders in there too. But they are exceptions to the rule. The merchandise numbers alone prove it is 'what have you done for me lately' but this is true with most sports, not just football. People want to associate with winners.

So you're saying that there are less Eagles fans now than there were in 2005.

I already pointed out the bandwagon fan argument and agree with it. But the fanbase of your most popular teams don't change, win or lose, and the Eagles have a low national fanbase, that was my whole point, and I think now you agree with me, I know the elbow does.

Perhaps a little, yes. Pittsburgh and Seattle picked up a few so it is 'what have you done for me lately or as you now agree, bandwagoneers. No difference.

The Eagles have more national appeal than the Dolphins.

Well we'll have to agree to disagree. I think I have provided evidence to the contrary, but if you're going to just look at last year's merchandise sales to hold your opinion, so be it.

Saw the preview for the first time last night - it actually looks pretty good! I think Invincible will do pretty well at the box office. I'll wait for the reviews before deciding if I'm going to see it.

Incorrect. We've looked at two years worth of merchandise now that has the Eagles at the top, and no mention at all of the Dolphins. The fact that you continue to say only one year tells me you want to ignore data.

And we've also looked at you're info which shows the Eagles ahead of the Dolphins in the recent past. So that's at least three data points proving my point, and only one proving yours, and even then it only proves it in the past. You got a link to that poll by the way? As it stands now, it's obvious the Eagles have more national appeal than the Dolphins.

Right, so the past two years the Eagles have sold a lot of merchandise, but what effect has that had on growing their national fanbase? None that you can provide.

And yes, in 2004 and 2005 the Eagles have been voted more popular by the Harris poll (found here by the way http://www.harrisinteractive.com/harris_po...ex.asp?PID=604) for the most recent two years, and the Dolphins were more popular going as far back as they go.

So for 2004 and 2005, the Eagles have been more popular than the Dolphins, agreed. What affect has that had on growing their national fanbase? I say little or none. Given the fact that the Dolphins were growing their fanbase under the shula super bowl winning era, I don't think 2 years can make up for that.

But those fans come and go. Sure under Shula the fan base probably grew, but then it declined as the Dolphins did nothing and Marino left.

But let's forget about fanbases because they're impossible to judge or rate. Going back to what we originally started with, the Eagles, as of right now, have more appeal than the Dolphins do.

national appeal is directly related to fan base

If you're going to argue that appeal has to do with winning record, you are wrong there too. But still you want to argue that point, the fins had a better record than the birds last year and will have a better record this year.

The Eagles have more national appeal because they were in the Super Bowl more recently, the entire TO deal brought them a lot of attention, McNabb is more of a recognizable player than anyone on the Fins (might change with Pepper there), and the city of Philadelphia has just been getting a lot of recognition lately as far as appearing in movies, TV shows, voted the next great city, etc.

So I guess that the Dolphins fans don't care about their team to much, 'cause they sure as sh|t ain't buying any of their merchandise :P

Please the Eagles will return to NFC East dominance. Maybe they'll meet the Fins in the SB, if the Fins get that far

I know you're just trolling but every team in the NFC East could potentially finish in first OR last. Right now I'd say the Cowboys look the best on paper, but Philly has the best QB in the division and they might have the best defense, too.

i agree. the cowboys and giants are the best team on paper to me, but this division is so close talentwise that a few lucky bounces here and a couple of injuries there, and any team could win it.

lets also keep in mind that if T.O. decides to be a jerk (and anything could set him off)..........we all know what could happen
