football_scooter 0 Posted September 27, 2006 http://www.turkishpress.com/news.asp?id=143974 Police won't confirm suicide bid by controversial gridiron star Owens Terrell Owens -- one of the most famous and controversial football players in the United States -- is in hospital, but a Dallas police spokesman has refused to confirm reports the mercurial player attempted suicide. "I'm not confirming anything," Dallas police lieutenant Rick Watson said at a press conference, although his comments appeared to contradict local media reports that the 32-year-old tried to kill himself with prescription pain pills. "In the course of our investigation we have determined this is not a criminal offense. This a medical type situation," Watson said Wednesday. "It's my understanding there was some information that was released prior to me speaking, but this is the official statement," Watson added. "The Dallas Police Department does not have any other investigation going on regarding this incident." Watson confirmed that police responded to a call involving Owens on Tuesday night at the request of paramedics. Dallas media cited a preliminary police report as saying Owens apparently purposely took too much medication, and confirmed to an officer that he had tried to harm himself. An official from Baylor hospital told AFP that he had been admitted but would not discuss why. A spokesman for the Dallas Cowboys also declined to comment when contacted by AFP. On Tuesday night, an unnamed Cowboys source told the Fort Wort Star Telegram that Owens had suffered an allergic reaction to pain medication. "This is not serious," Owen's publicist, Kim Etheridge, said. Owens was prescribed pain medication after breaking the bone leading to his right ring finger in the Cowboys September 17 victory over Washington. Cowboys coach Bill Parcells said on September 20 that the pain medication made Owens ill. Owens had originally been expected to miss two to four weeks of NFL action. But he caught passes on the sideline during team practice on Tuesday, when Parcells said he thought Owens would take full practice on Wednesday. "If he can get to the point where it looks like he can function and he feels pretty good about it. ... It's just, can he withstand the pain of catching the ball? If he can withstand it, he can play." Signed to a three-year, 25-million-dollar contract in the offseason, Owens also missed most of Dallas' preseason practices and all but one exhibition game due to a hamstring injury. Owens returned for the Cowboys' regular-season opener against Jacksonville, catching six passes for 80 yards. Last week, Owens said he plans to be in uniform when the Cowboys face the rival Philadelphia Eagles - Owens' former team - on October 8. Owens's departure from Philadelphia was acrimonious. The media has no business breaking this stuff, but of course, you are biased, and an idiot. Im biased? Ummm...how so? Because I factually pointed out that TO has used the media to promote himself in the past? I nor anyone in my family have ever been excused from part of our jobs only to do sit ups in front of the house for the cameras.....Myself, nor anyone in my family is a high priced athlete that uses the media to his advantage time and time again. The media broke it, because much was made of alot of it from his publicist. Idiot? No need for the insults...but you might want to look in the mirror when you accuse someone of that...especially someone who simply posted some factual information. Grow up. robzm19 6 Posted September 27, 2006 I just thought about something. If he had the surgery a week ago sunday I would imagine pain pills would be prescribed starting the next day. normally for vicodine/hidrocodone theyll give you one tablet every 4 hours off the 500mg. Now all the bottles ive seen have been for 20 in rare cases 40. Tos was 40 so that means in 10days every 4 hours at 1 pill he would of been on his last pills. maybe he did only take 5 pills. I just dont see him having 35pills left in the bottle.

Wow...you did not look ignorant enough when you insulted me the first time...so you thought you would try again? Irrational? What about pointing out the fact that he has whored himself out to the media in the past making this type of situation not so private anyway was irrational? Eagle fan? Even more ignorance....but nice try. Media has screwed the pooch? They have taken their information from the publicist and police reports....again...maybe you should understand the facts before pretending to know enough to talk intelligently on a topic. GhostofMeanMachine99 1 Posted September 27, 2006 It should be pointed out that TO's previous two employers supposedly recommended to the player that he should seek psychiatric treatment, to which the player flatly said no way. I believe the one person who's clouding up the whole picture here is the publicist. She was the one who called the fire department last nite, who told them she was worried about what the heck just happened, and also the same one who prevented TO from popping the last few pills into his mouth. She was there when the paramedics arrived, and she was also there when the police arrived. I would gather she was also present when TO answered the questions asked by the police. With that said, if there a few chances for her at that point to clarify the situation for the police. By her not doing so at that point, I would have to believe that she had no idea. Now today, this person the publicist has to out into the public, tell everyone that it was a big misunderstanding, that the original police report was inaccurate (even though she was right there), and I would gather the story that TO told her when he regained his faculties is the honest truth, that he mixed his meds with some supplements. So it comes down to TO's truth, even though the publicist/friend has more insight into what happened than anyone involved. So we'll never know unless the friend within the publicist actually comes forward to present all of the facts of the story. Methinks there is a huge case of denial within that swelled head of Owens, and that is the real tragedy of the whole situation.

jlbay 0 Posted September 27, 2006 As an Eagles fan I will weigh in on this. Obviously one of two things happend here, either: 1) Owens tried to kill himself. Which if this is the case than his handlers are doing this guy a great dis-service. I don't care if it is his agent, his PR assistant or the Cowboys braintrust - if they are spinning that he is just fine, and plan on having him play or continue to generate their cashflow - then they should be ashamed of themselves. As has been posted this is a human being, like him or not, he should be treated humanly and be given the necessary help his current condition requires. or 2) He had a very bad reaction to his prescription drugs (possibly taking a larger dose than was prescribed). If this is the case then the Policy Department and the Fire Department should have been more forthcoming. I don't think that Owens and/or his handlers would have made an issue out of them making the statement that Owens was simply treated for an adverse reaction to his medication. However, I don't think you can really fault the news agencies for getting this wrong, they have reported on the limited information they have, and it does seem to indicate a possible suicide. A couple of other points on this subject, I believe the 911 tape will be very revealing as to what exactly TO's PR woman thought was going on. If she did call this in as an attempt at taking his own life, and is now back tracking, boy her career should be over. I don't think a massive Cowboys cover up is underway, as some have elluded to, I simply don't think the NFL would allow any team to not getting a player in desperate need the help they require. Also by this quote I think there are some NFL league ramifications any way this shakes out: According to the NFL's substance abuse policy, "The illegal use of drugs and the abuse of prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs and alcohol is prohibited for players in the National Football League." NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the league was "aware of the reports” about Owens’ health. “We are monitoring the situation and staying in close touch with the Cowboys," he said. If this really is no big deal, as it has been characterized by Owens PR person, why would the league need to monitor the situation and stay in close touch with the Cowboys. I just think there is more to the story than what has been spun by either the media or Owen's handlers.
