ProfessorZ 0 Posted October 30, 2006 Yea, they're great. For those of you who don't know what we're talking about, let me give you a little summary. The commercial is montage of historical images - - This is Rosa Parks. She fought segregation. - This is people protesting the Vietnam War - This is Muhammad Ali - This John Cougar Mellancamp **BUY OUR FOCKING TRUCK** - This is Richard Nixon - This is a picture of the desert - This is the 9/11 light monument - These are firefighters representing the guys who died in the twin towers Are you feeling nice and patriotic? Good because it's also patriotic to BUY OUT FOCKING TRUCK!@## Chevy, as American as a black woman fighting segregation, as American as Muhammad Ali fighting racial discrimination, as American as Richard Nixon, as American as 9/11 and the fire fighters who died in the towers, as American as a little girl in a cowboy hat sitting in our FOCKING TRUCK. Are you feeling patriotic yet? ARE YOU?!?#!@ WELL GOOD!#!@@# **NOW BUY OUR FOCKING TRUCK**
tony hardware 0 Posted October 30, 2006 I'm not surprised to find haters in here. Mellencamp doesn't suck. "Jack and Diane" is one of the best songs ever. Seriously, ever. How do I know? Because 90% of Americans turn that song up loud and listen to the whole thing every time it comes on the radio. You most likely sing along too. There are only a handful of songs like that. hoytdwow 202 Posted October 30, 2006 I like Mellencamp, but I think that song is pretty lame actually. Totally lame. A baldly jingoistic ploy that marries marketing with "patriotism" Focking sellout
Electric Mayhem 35 Posted October 30, 2006 I agree Jack & Diane is one of the best songs ever. I also think that pulling on the heart strings of Americans to buy a truck is lame, especially relating a truck company in any way to 9/11. Leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Also never much liked his music. Guess I'm a commie Little story about Mellencamp. He was a struggling young artist looking for a record deal. The only offer he got was from Mercury records. They agreed to sign him under one condition..he use the stage name of John Cougar. He hated the idea, but it was his only chance. As soon as Hurt So Good and Jack and Diane made him an artist to be reckoned with, he realized that he now had the power, not Mercury records. He promptly changed his name back to Mellencamp. That's it. End of story. He's no vain idiot like Sean Combs or Ocho Sinco. Liking his music or not is an opinion. It's very staright forward roots rock. Nothing fancy. Guitars, drums, and vocals. I happen to enjoy 90% of what he does, but I can understand those who don't.

Chevy = American company American company = American jobs buy Chevy = more American jobs Come on people, just because you hate our president, doesn't mean you have to hate our country. Look at the hunter, lumberjack and boyscout and say, "geez, America is a nice place. I may not want a Chevy truck, but its a nice looking car." Practically every car manufacturer has factories in the US. Just buying new cars means jobs for Americans. I am extremely patriotic. I don't want to be pandered to because of it. I have visions of Mr. Burns wringing his hands in a Chevy board room watching profits soar and laughing at the success of his Americana ad campaign.

jerryskids 6,836 Posted October 30, 2006 Do you think Mellencamp will do a Honda commercial when the new Honda plant opens in Indiana next year and employs 2,000 of his fellow Indiana-ites? If they pay him enough, yes. Honestly, I don't get the hatred of the patriotic nature of the ads. They are going for their target market. If you don't like the ad then you probably aren't in that market. It is the way of advertising.
hoytdwow 202 Posted October 30, 2006 Honestly, I don't get the hatred of the patriotic nature of the ads. The problem, and the same problem exists in politics today, is that, for a large segment of the population, if you don't get all misty-eyed at the patriotic displays in ads like this, then you are UNPATRIOTIC. jerryskids 6,836 Posted October 30, 2006 Sure, but it's offensive to smart people I'm pretty sure that Chevy will sacrifice the MENSA market if they get 100X more hicks to buy them. Also the goal of advertising is for you to buy the product, not to like the commercial (ex: Energizer Bunny). Also, if you are old enough to remember "baseball, hot dogs, apple pie and Chevrolet" you can probably still sing the jingle. That was a fairly patriotic campaign as well. wiffleball 4,790 Posted October 30, 2006 I agree that I like the song and the commercials, but: Wasn't it JCM that was soo anti-establishment, anti-sell-out, not too long ago?? I'd really like to know the process here. Did he write this jingoistic song ("hey, Toby Kieth's making a BUNDLE on this stuff!") , then get his agent to market it to the highest bidder? - Or did Chevy contract with him to write the song for their new ad campaign? It's not like Chevy just happened to hear this song before it was even released.
