***Geek Board NCAA Tourney Pool***

Alright, based on how much interest we can generate I am ready to run a board pool for the tourney. I'll use something simple (ESPN) for rules and scoring. $10 or $20 was what I was thinking but that is open for debate. I'd prefer to use Paypal for payments as that will avoid any bs regarding 'lost' checks, and give people a little more protection against QLIAFT-like situations (I'm not a welcher/thief but I think people need something more than simple trust when it comes to online pools/leagues).

If by next Monday there is solid interest in it, I will start organizing payment, Paypal details, etc. ESPN usually lets people start making tournament entries/groups around Selection Sunday so that would be when I e-mail out the group name/pass. Danzone usually shows up to put a good $5 pool together and uses paypal. I've done that the last two years and there hasn't been any problems (except my poor picking..). I'm not sure if he plans on that this year or not, just thought I would throw that out there.

I collected the money for a college bowl we ran at TDZ and also ran the secret santa in which 7 people sent me gifts and then I re-routed them. I'm sure than can vouche for me. People even sent me checks. Id rather paypal, but not everyone has it.

Apparently TDZ has been doing it the last couple years so he must be legit (not even Geeks would be dumb enough to get ripped off twice...well, most geeks). If he says he is doing it again then we can just join his.

Alright then, I will do it. In light of how TDZ previously did it and what most posters seem to approve of, it will be a $5 entry fee. Please use this thread over the next few days to discuss how we should work payout (percent to winner/2nd/3rd, all to winner, etc). Also want to discuss method of payment over the next few days and get that settled. Paypal places limits on number of transactions one can receive and also charges a fee, so I'm not sure how well that would work. The other option would obviously be for me to email an address to everyone and have check/MO/cash mailed in (need to decide soon for this one to make sure everyone can get their payment sent in on time). While this isn't as secure (a big deal in light of QLIAFT) $5 should be a safe amount to send and everyone will have the option of posting my address for all to see and torment (I have no intention of screwing with people or taking my time sending out payment, but I fully understand that people will have some skepticism for all such deals on the board now).

I could be wrong, but it's my understanding PayPal has a 500 dollar limit on accounts that aren't "business accounts" but nothing as far as the amount of transactions one could take in. Considering everyone is only paying 5$, even if 50 people played we would only be at 250. As for the fees, I believe it is something like 4% so it's not like anyone is going to be eating a big loss. We're talking about 4 bucks for every 20 people who play. We could always adjust the payouts taking into consideration the 4% PayPal would be taking from you (or whichever account we deposit into).

 

Either way I don't care. It's only 5$ so nobody is going to lose the house over it. It just seems alot easier to go to a website instead of involving all this archaic paper nobody uses anymore.

Then I am fine with paypal for everyone who can. I can add together the fees and subtract from the payout (and include documentation to keep it legit).

 

ETA: Once we begin with collecting payments, make sure you clarify in the letter/Paypal payment what your forum name is so I can keep a running list of who is all set.

Thats fine, I actually expected more people to be reluctant after the QLIAFT incident. For the people who use paypal they at least have the option of opening a trouble ticket. Other than that and having my address I'm not sure what other security measures I can offer (but if you think of some let me know).
