wiffleball 4,797 Posted February 28, 2007 Kieth Urban. About as 'mainstream' as they get in country music - BUT - huge point here - He's actually talented. Actually, incredibly talented. A lot of the more 'mainstream' artists suck buttwater.
Fumbleweed 555 Posted February 28, 2007 If you knew of someone that was not a fan of country music but agreed to give it a try. Who would you tell them to listen to? It depends on if they could tolerate a little twang or not. George Strait is kind of the ultimate active country artist in my opinion, but if a person is fairly cosmopolitan, they may fail to relate to the music. I love playing George Strait as I travel through rural Texas. It just makes sense there. If a person is less rural, they might do better with an artist that is not as "twangy" for lack of a better word.
The Moz 71 Posted February 28, 2007 Not a huge fan of Country but I really like Toby Keith and to an extent Trace Atkins. I would reccomend those 2 over anyone else. If they like a GREAT voice Allison Kraus.
wiffleball 4,797 Posted February 28, 2007 Not a huge fan of Country but I really like Toby Keith and to an extent Trace Atkins. I would reccomend those 2 over anyone else. If they like a GREAT voice Allison Kraus. Wow. I don't usually critique other's preferences, but I'm Not sure how you can be so right about AK and so wrong about Trace. - What a dichotomy! Allison Kraus & Union Station is amazing. Every one of them is award-winning in their individual instrument playing ability alone. Then, throw in the incredible voice of Allison Kraus and they put out a quality rarely seen in any genre. Trace Atkins? Geebus, what a focking embarassment. He's basically a country rapper. He can't sign, he talks. And puts out such producer driven classics like "Honky Donk Badonkadonk". I would be freaking embarassed to introduce him to anyone that I liked that wanted to get to know country music. Toby's got a great voice, good song writing and okay musical skills. He got a little overexposed there for a while, but it sure doesn't detract from his voice. IMHO.

Have to agree with this. I would only recommend Trace Atkins if the goal was to put them off of country music forever.
Super Cubs 155 Posted February 28, 2007 Kieth Urban. About as 'mainstream' as they get in country music - BUT - huge point here - He's actually talented. Actually, incredibly talented. A lot of the more 'mainstream' artists suck buttwater. Kieth Urban and Rascal Flatts are'nt what I would call county. I was one in 70,000+ to see George Strait last night at Rodeo Houston. There is none higher than King George. I would go with his first 3 albums and greats hits vol 2 before any of his new stuff. But I think I would go with Clay Walker over George. Only because I think his music would appeal more to non fans.
wiffleball 4,797 Posted February 28, 2007 Kieth Urban and Rascal Flatts are'nt what I would call county. Rascall Flatts are the Backstreet Boys of country music. I can appreciate that you may not think that Kieth Urban is your brand of 'country', hell, there's really no one 'country' sound anymore. However, there's a crapload of Country music industry insiders that DO think so. - And have said so repeatedly via the CMA's. Urban was the first Non-American to win: Horizon Award Male Vocalist of the Year Entertainer of the Year (male) Hell, he actually won Male Vocalist of the Year 3 years in a row. - Only George Strait has done that. He plays multiple instruments, composes the music & writes & performs his own songs. - Hell that's more than most country artists these days. - That's country enough for me. But some folks need that 'twang' (like Strait). Unfortunately, that's what turns most non-fans off. So, that's why I think he's a good inroad. IMHO.

naomi 360 Posted March 1, 2007 Agreed that it depends on how much twang that person could take. Generally Sherrie Austin (she's a country aussie) Definitely Allison Kraus Lyle Lovett Big & Rich Miranda Lambert Jimmy Wayne (a name can't sound much more hickish than that) Recently I've been starting to like Brad Paisley, I use to think he was too generic but then started to fall in love with his voice. That rec. would be more based off personal like and then he seems to have popular appeal.

naomi 360 Posted March 1, 2007 I love country music, but these 2 could be left off the radio waves and I would not miss them! You've got to hear Lovett's Nobody Knows Me, he starts singing about liking eggs over easy with flour tortillas and somehow it's a good song. (think this might be a famous song he's covering, not sure though). That and In My Own Mind...classic. B&R I admit have a couple really annoying songs made up for by two in particular that are really good. Sux?

Lionsjunkie 1 Posted March 1, 2007 Kenny Chesney This time last year I would've never have given any Country music song a chance....then I saw Kenny Chesney at Mandalay Bay in Veags and have been on board ever since. Several of his songs are related to drinking and white sandy beaches....kind of gets you in the Kenny Chesney Live is a good start

Good variety of stuff....most of it very positive and solid.....but there's the occasional downer like Whiskey Lullaby...which doesn't mean it's not a very good song as it is. Somebody mentioned Steve Wariner. He's my all-time favorite country singer, but he's been out of the mainstream for several years. He kind of represents country from a different era, but I still think he's my favorite all-time.

Nothing he sings anymore is about rural life....at all. It's about one of two things: Life in the Caribbean and/or life back in high school. Glad you made a connection with his music...for many, there's not much connection with him left. Certainly not for many average rural persons.

I think his Road & Radio Tour was the highest grossing act last year...and, he has already sold out several large stadium shows 4-6 months in advance this year. What I like about him, vs some of those twangy country folk that sing about their trip to the grocery store, their kid spilling his chicken nuggets all over the place etc, etc is that people really connect with summertime, drinking, and the white sandy beaches of the carribean....who wouldn't Here are just a few that really get me in the mood for some drinking and grooving http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=344H24I7SL4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2iBxG-Jtgk0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YP_sB9Sny4

I meant what I said. He's still obviously got a huge following. But, he's left many fans without much taste for him. I didn't say he wasn't immensely popular with a solid core of people. I just know quite a few people who feel his music left their sphere of reality years ago. I'm glad you connect with the Caribbean. It's not someplace I get to go very often. I connect more with the grocery store/chicken nuggets thing.

CantTouchThis 23 Posted March 1, 2007 Haven't been listening to it a lot lately but... Big and Rich- seemed to be well liked by a lot of people who are not country fans Montgomery Gentry- they have a lot of southern rock and blues in their music, never heard a bad song from them. Toby- He is just the man Some stuff by Kenny and Tim- a lot of there stuff is slow and boring, but, some stuff is very good. Anything by Garth obviously, he is quiet these days, but was a God back in the 90s Hank Williams Jr. is also awesome.
