MisanthropicAnthropoid 0 Posted July 17, 2008 I'm taking my four younger siblings to the midnight showing. Pretty excited, after how impressed I was with Batman Begins. Also, I've been a huge Nolan fan since seeing Memento and Following.

No one bothered to fandango them so no one is going tonight. Not usually my type of movie but it looks good.

Christian Bale (The Machinist, 3:10 to Yuma, The Prestige, Batman Begins) stars. Heath Ledger plays the Joker. Maggie Gyllenhaal (Donnie Darko, Stranger than Fiction) is also in it. MisanthropicAnthropoid 0 Posted July 18, 2008 Heath gets his Oscar. Chris ought to get one too. Action packed, but doesn't feel like an action movie. Off the cuff, I'd say it tops the original. You won't be disappointed.
MontanaOvahBrady 0 Posted July 18, 2008 Just caught the midnight showing. If it wasn't 3 am I would write more. But amazing. Simply amazing. It didn't stray away from the comic books while giving the audience something that no other superhero movies gave us. Heath Ledger stole the movie, oscar for sure. I'm going to sleep. thorshammer 0 Posted July 18, 2008 I saw it. It was and and and and finally . go see it. its worth the cash. Ledger will get the "O" nod for this too.
wiffleball 4,800 Posted July 18, 2008 Wow. Did that movie suck. I can't believe they killed off Maggy Gyllenhall & Michael Caine. He was my favorite part of the whole franchise. Apparently, the whole thing with Caine was contractual.
wiffleball 4,800 Posted July 18, 2008 PTA: Pretty wild coincidence that Heath ledger played with both Maggie and Jake Gyllenhall. I'm surprised the Westboro Baptist kooks haven't come out and said Heath died because he played a homersexual.

MicktheGreat 1 Posted July 18, 2008 I don't want to reveal any spoilers. Oh...I've already seen the movie. wiffleball 4,800 Posted July 18, 2008 I'm pretty sure he was just trying to be a dik and make people think they were reading spoilers. Well actually, Mick just revealed a HOOOGE sperler - Turns out Michael Caine is apparently NOT KILLED in this movie. Him and the Batmobile are pretty much the only two things that made the first Batman worthwhile. Now that that tension's been relieved, it really takes away from the drama of the movie. They could kill off the whole lot as long as long as at the end of the movie Alfred's cruising into the suset with the BatMobile.
MicktheGreat 1 Posted July 18, 2008 Like a lot of people, I saw The Dark Knight early this morning (12:01 a.m.). Here are my thoughts: PROs: 1. The Cast For a comic book movie, this has a fantastic cast -- probably the best cast ever for a super hero film. Christian Bale shines again as the ridiculously wealthy playboy Bruce Wayne and the caped crusader Batman (though, in all honesty, he plays Bruce Wayne better than he plays Batman). Maggie Gyllenhaal is definitely a step-up from Katie Holmes (who played the same role in the last film), and Aaron Eckhardt makes for a likable Harvey Dent. Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, and Eric Roberts are also all solid in their roles. 2. The Joker I've been extremely skeptical about this portrayal of Joker for a long time. I always thought that Jack Nicholson's portrayal of The Joker was the best comic book villain ever. I was critical of the Heath Ledger casting and chalked up the early buzz surrounding his performance as the media's tendency to place the brand of "icon" on individuals who don't deserve it (no offense...Ledger's a decent actor...no where near the "icon" that he's being portrayed as right now). All that said, I was completely wrong about the Ledger casting. He's about as near perfect in this film as one could expect -- adding a level of menace and manic that is absolutely spellbinding. Personally, I like my villains to be pure bad, without any notion of internal conflict or reservation (see: Chigurh, Kizer Soze, Voldemort, Alex DeLarge, Stansfield, etc.); and Ledger's depiction of The Joker is exactly in this vain: pure chaotic evil. 3. The Action Scenes Though still not a great director of action-sequences, Christopher Nolan does a considerably better job in this film of providing the audience with some space in which to see exactly what's happening. There are a couple of spots where he slips into those close-up profile shots (which don't really work during heavy action sequences); but it's not so crippling in this film as it is, at times, in his previous effort. CONs: 1. Length Surprisingly, the story here isn't nearly as tight as it could've been or should've been. Most of this has to be placed on Nolan himself who directed & co-wrote the project. The film feels about 30 minutes too long and really, really peters out toward the end -- relying on a series of highly repetitive and tiresome scenes, culminating with an ending that is, frankly, boring in comparison to the rest of the film. 2. Tone This Batman film tries to introduce some different and more complex philosophical ideas regarding the very notions of "super hero" and "super villain". That's all fair & good in theory. Unfortunately, most of this quasi-philosophical babble feels rather forced and somewhat bland. The problem isn't with the ideas themselves -- it's just that others have done a better job of discussing the complexities involving the world of super heroes (Alan Moore's graphic novel, The Watchmen, for instance, which makes the complexities of this film seem like those of a day-time soap-opera). 3. The Second Villain No offense to the second villain. In reality, this villain isn't given much to work with in the script, making his/her plight seem pretty absurd and boring. Plus, this second villain has the added pressure of competing for our attention with The Joker, which, as alluded to earlier, is no easy feat. Ultimately, I'd recommend seeing The Dark Knight. I certainly don't think that it's the "masterpiece" that a lot of critics are making it out to be. I could probably entertain the argument that it's the best super hero movie ever made -- though, personally, I don't think that it is. It's definitely not worth mentioning in the same breath as the great crime films (as some are suggesting). Ledger will probably get an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor, and I wouldn't be disappointed by that at all -- like I said, I was extremely skeptical of his performance at first but my mind was changed. I'd give it: (out of 5)

Wow I'm in complete disagreement about Maggie Gyllenhaal. Both that wife and I were making fun of her the entire movie. It was like something was focking wrong with her face in this movie. Absolute dog face. Someone took a pear and turned it upside down. FAT forehead/puffy eyes and upper cheeks.... virtually non-exsistant chin. She was butt ugly in this movie and it really ended up being a problem for me. Boy was she a disappointment... it looked like she was on medication that made her upper face retain water or something. Very droopy dog looking with her big eyes and no chin. x 3. Just her being in that role made me care much less about her plight in the movie. Weird because I thought she's looked better before. I do however agree with your comments about the length. About 3/4 of the way through it's like things just started to meander. Around the time our 2nd villan comes to fruition and from there on. The wife and I even made a few comments about the movie taking a nap right then. Too bad about Ledger dieing... he was focking perfect for that role and did fantastic. I mean really... just fantastic for that role. I for one am drinking Ledgers oscar nom/win koolaid.

Maggie has looked attractive in other movies...but she was just not stunning enough in this movie to sweep Bruce Wayne off his feet. Wayne is dating Russian skaters and models...but he's waiting for ...that thing?
