I've known Donald Driver since he was a rookie: he participated in Santana Dotson's charity billiards tournaments. I love to play pool, so I first entered one when DD was a rookie. He ended up as my "celebrity" on my team (randomly picked), and we won. 6 months later there was another charity tournament, and by this time Dotson's charity merged with Quickie's. This time DD specifically asked to be on my team, and we won again. We just hit it off.

 

DD's largest charity event - a golf and pool tournament - is held in Houston every summer, and I always bring a foursome. It's a great time, and lots of players and other celebrities participate. Because of my friendship with DD, we're treated just like the celebrities (stay in the same hotel; limo with them to the VIP parties; enjoy the same hospitality room, etc). When Rodgers was a rookie, he came to DD's event, and he hasn't missed one of DD's events since - and I've gotten to know him as a result, because I don't miss these events either. In fact, Rodgers was teamed up with me a couple of events ago, and we took 2nd.

 

It's cool to have become friends with DD and Rodgers; I get invited to some pretty special stuff (DD's 10th wedding anniversary party; Halloween parties, etc), and it just makes being a fan all that much more enjoyable.

 

I'm around these guys fairly often: you have no idea how difficult it is to draw the line when it comes to granting attention to fans. Keep in mind that there was a camera there as well, and Rodgers would prefer to avoid interviews, as they all would - it gets incredibly draining. I can tell you that Rodgers is very generous when it comes to autographs, but since his stature has been elevated the last couple of years, it's forced him to withdraw a bit societally.

 

It's nice and all that she's a fan, and it's a hardship to have endured breast cancer - but seriously - it's incredibly unfair to attach a label to Rodgers just because he walked past an old lady wearing pink holding out a hat. She actually had a Matthews jersey for Matthews to sign, btw.

 

He's the opposite of a d0uche, and I'm defending him because I know what he's like.

It turns out Ms. Cavanaugh is a regular at the airport when the Packers travel and can often be found trying to get players to sign things for her.

Of course, the image is damning in a way regardless of context. Rodgers - and those charged with caring for his public image - simply has to be smarter than that. There's obviously a camera crew there, there's a woman they know is a cancer victim - and he just breezes right past her. I get it. Really, I do. Aaron Rodgers and other players didn't autograph her cap as she saw them off to Atlanta -- but it's not the hat she's upset about, it's the Internet and radio chatter created by the video of Rodgers passing her by.

 

"I was terribly upset this morning because I did not realize what was online, and opened up my email," she said, "and I was just shocked."

 

The video has drawn criticism but the only people Jan is critical of today are those creating the chatter.

 

"I am very unhappy with people making so much out of this, because this really isn't that big of a deal. It's up to the players to decide who they want to give an autograph to, and that's their prerogative."

 

Just a week earlier, Rodgers autographed Jan's pink jersey bearing the number 12 as the team departed for Philadelphia. A few years ago the now-star quarterback signed a number of things for her, too.
