Does birth control really cost

I am seriously asking, because I don't know. Question inspired by (partial) story below.

ABC News’ Alexa Keyes reports:

"The social issues debate re-ignited on Capitol Hill today when senators killed a proposal to throw out President Obama’s contraception mandate. Conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh was thrust into the center of the debate after he called the woman who was denied the right to speak on the controversial all-male conception panel at a hearing last month a “slut” on his show Wednesday. The issue heated up more today when Limbaugh took his comments even further.

The conservative radio host’s remarks sparked an angry backlash from House Democrats, including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of California and Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y. But instead of heeding their requests for an apology, Limbaugh doubled down against what he called the “conniption fit” of the House Democrats.

Echoing Foster Friess, the single largest donor to the pro- Rick Santorum’s super PAC, Limbaugh said that he would “happily buy [Fluke] all the aspirin she wants.”

Limbaugh was referencing the comment Friess made in February when he said the “gals” in “his day” put aspirin between their legs in lieu of contraception. Limbaugh then expanded his offer to include the university’s entire female student body.

“I will buy all of the women at Georgetown University as much aspirin to put between their knees as they want,” he said.

Sandra Fluke, a third-year student at Georgetown University Law School, was barred from testifying by Rep. Darrell Issa, the committee chair at the faith-based hearing on Capitol Hill, because he deemed her unqualified. Issa said the panel was supposed to focus on religious freedom and Fluke is not a member of any clergy.

She eventually spoke to a Democratic hearing spearheaded by Pelosi on Feb. 23, where she talked about the need for birth control coverage. Fluke spoke of one friend in particular who needed contraception to prevent ovarian cysts.

Rush Limbaugh, though, had a different take on Fluke’s testimony. On his show Wednesday, he suggested that the reason Fluke cannot afford birth control is because she is having too much sex.

“Can you imagine if you’re her parents how proud of Sandra Fluke you would be?” he said. “Your daughter…testifies she’s having so much sex she can’t afford her own birth control pills and she agrees that Obama should provide them, or the pope.”

Fluke testified that without insurance coverage, contraception can cost a woman as much as $3,000 during law school."

Rush thinks you take a birth control pill every time you have sex and the reason she can't afford it is because she's having too much sex?

Is that what he was saying???

Are you seriously trying to figure out what Limblob was trying to say?

The question is spawned by Fluke saying that it costs here $3000 for birth control during law school (typically 3 years, so $1000 per year).

The answer to the question is that it can cost that much, but it is probably less than that for almost everyone. :dunno:

Nope. He was saying that if we pay for her tramping around, then we are her pimp and she is our prostitute.

That's what I took away from it too.

Although I'm equally perplexed by the aspirin comment. I've never heard of that one.

It is not just contraception but all aspects of "women's" health care that will be free. And yes, with a government run program it will cost at least that much.

For most people it prolly costs like 15-30 bucks a month. So more like 300 bucks a year.

I guess if you don't have insurance (or insurance doesn't cover it) then it can be cheaper or even free if you go to Planned Parenthood.

Please do keep pushing this issue. Obama will take 90% of the women's vote and drub whatever dooshnozzle it is that the Republicans end up nominating.

Which form of birf control was she using to equate $3000 a year? Abortion?

Some women can only take certain kinds of birth control because they have reactions to other kinds. My guess is this particular woman is limited to an expensive brand of birth control.

But really, is it any of your effing business? Or Rush Limbaugh's, for that matter?

The woman was apparently seeking to testify before Congress.

It's not even a womens right issue to me. It's simply that our gov't wants to MANDATE a service provided by a private industry.

Most (more than half) of all insurance covers contraception. An even a larger percentage of big group plans like you find in coroporations covers it. And the gov't already helps to fund womens health clinics that help those uninsured to get the pill or whatever.

It's not about womens rights, its about making a private insustry bow down to the all mighty gov't. Again.

So take her testimony on the merits. Don't call her a slut and hint that she must be getting abortions on a regular basis.

When morons like Rush Limbaugh go around saying these women must be sluts because they want access to birth control, it becomes a women's rights issue. The right wing has gone full retard on this, as usual.

Rush Linbaugh is a shock jock radio talk show host. The sooner YOU realize that the better off we'll be.

If you read my original question, way up at the top, I was asking about the merits of her contention that birth control cost $1,000.00 per year.

In fairness to Rush, most women are sluts.

Yes. It can cost that much. I pay $60 a month which would be $720 a year.

Really? He and his ilk seem to drive a lot of the Republican party's agenda these days. If you aren't in their good graces you probably aren't getting the right wing vote.

That's for the patch though. This broad can buy regular, normal contraception pill for less than 40 bucks a month. And that is without any insurance at all.

The 3K number is hyperbole used for a shock factor. Not much different than a radio host using hyperbole for a shock factor.

Who said anything about the patch? And women typically have to try a few different kinds of pills before they find one that works for them, so they can't all just "get a cheaper one".

This is exactly why men shouldn't be in charge of making laws about our vaginas.

the issue has nothing to do with womans rights... The govt loves talking about giving away free stuff... They love segmenting the free giveaways into their favored subclasses of people that they can pit against each other... This one is a womans free give away. Tomorrow may be a latino college tuition giveaway. Occasionally even see the military veteran giveaways.

Flavor of the month free cupcake.

In the grand scheme of things it is somewhat inconsequential, the massive bloat and size will accelerate costs more than these freebie giveaways... Just another BS issue to sidetrack the mouthbreathers...

How did we pay for our own birth control the last forty years and now all of a sudden we can't?

i think it was somewhere around the time when we wanted our cake and to eat it too..

Amazes me how loosely the idea of 'rights' gets tossed around. We get a few new rights every month or so... Misunderstanding what a right really is has caused all this trouble.

Because covering birth control is much cheaper than paying for pregnancies. Since everyone will be required to have insurance this is a way to keep the collective costs down.

You didn't answer my question. How did we pay for or own birth control the last forty years? I understand insurance companies pay for it in most policies. How did people without insurance or weren't covewred pay for it?
