IGotWorms 3,315 Posted February 14, 2013 Anybody watch this show? I tried watching the pilot but couldn't get into it. However I have read in several places that it is a good show, so I'm wondering if I should give it a second chance.

Mungwater 588 Posted February 14, 2013 I like it, but it is a little slow at the beginning. One of my professors in grad school was an undercover CIA guy for about thirty years. Once he retired and started teaching, he had to come out from cover (his wife was an agent too). He would tell the most amazing stories about the things he's done, very similar to the show. parrot 789 Posted February 14, 2013 I've watched the first three episodes (though I was flipping back and forth with "Way of the Gun" last night. Don't know how I had never seen that before). It's pretty solid. The coinky-dink of the Noah Emmerich character moving in right across the street from the KGB agents is a bit much to swallow, but I can get past it. Mungwater 588 Posted February 14, 2013 If I could do it all over again I'd probably want to be a spook. But how does one even get into that kind of thing? Anyway, that must've been a very interesting class He said that they come find you, he was finishing law school and got a phone call. He went on an interview, then you get a letter from the department of interior offering you a position. He also said that the language classes are all in places in plain sight, like car dealerships and whatnot. Really amazing. Undercover guys have real jobs and receive paychecks from the companies (they know that they have spooks in them, but don't know who). Even when you receive your paycheck, you send that right to the government then they issue a check of what your real pay is. He said that when you do your taxes you do them with the information from your cover job, there is one guy in the IRS who knows who all the spies are and changes them after they get your returns. One cool story was that he was going to wiretap a Russian line when working in Moscow. He had the cover of a finance guy working in the embassy. He said that they pre-recorded his voice at a cocktail party and the other people would respond accordingly to the recordings. The KGB was listening and thought that he was there. While the party was going on, he went into costume as an old Russian lady and tapped the line. He then ditched his outfit at the safehouse and snuck back into the party. Really amazing stuff. Funny part was that even his own family didn't know he was a spy. His family got on him about not finding stable work because he kept moving to different countries every three or so years. He is in his seventies now, even now he said that he was contacted because they found an Al Qaeda cell in College Station TX and they recovered his photograph at their place. IGotWorms 3,315 Posted February 14, 2013 Yeah I've heard that they come find you. I wonder how they figure out who to go after. I once read that they put recruiters in college positions, but I don't know if that's true. Hell, your professor could've been one but then he probably wouldn't talk about how he used to be a spy. Interesting stuff. I bet the lucky guy has had enough adventure to fill a few lifetimes.

Interesting stuff. I bet the lucky guy has had enough adventure to fill a few lifetimes. He said that they're mostly in conservative colleges where patriotism runs high. He said that Texas A&M is full of them, they got him from the University of Iowa. The only reason he left the CIA and started teaching at the Bush school of Leadership is because George Bush Sr. is a very close personal friend of his and asked him. Can you imagine the stories that must be going on a cook out with those two guys? Would be amazing
IGotWorms 3,315 Posted February 14, 2013 Interesting. That makes sense that they would target "patriotic"-type schools. Guess I shouldn't have been a liberal arts major at a commie pinko liberal institution. Although if I were a recruiter I would want some of those people, but maybe that's just me. Although if I were a recruiter I would want some of those people, but maybe that's just me. it would follow that communists, muz brotherhood recruiters would be at liberal arts institutions. most kids grow out of their communist leanings when they get out of the college surroundings and start paying taxes, so the 30 year-old, hairy guys that are there trying to get 20 year-old a$$ would be the ones to target. I don't think that's necessarily true. Sure there are some realities of life that you must confront after college and that probably has some effect on your values/beliefs, but I don't think it causes everyone to suddenly abandon core philosophical beliefs and adopt a cynical philosophy of selfishness. shotsup 832 Posted February 15, 2013 I usually DVR a few episodes and bang it out on a weekend to see if it is worth watching. Give us a fee weeks and I'll let you know.
striker1z 0 Posted February 15, 2013 I've watched the episodes so far. It's a little slow at times, but it's really good at times. The thing that really annoys me are all the commercial breaks. I've had to DVR it so that I can fast forward through them.
posty 2,296 Posted February 26, 2014 Season 2 debuts tonight (10pm ET on FX)... Runs for 67 minutes tonight, so set your VCRs accordingly...

parrot 789 Posted February 26, 2014 Never seen it, but season One is on Amazon Prime. So whats the consensus? Worth starting it from scratch? Or PASS? It's not life-altering or anything, but it's solid. And Keri Russell is still pretty hot.
IGotWorms 3,315 Posted February 26, 2014 It's not as good as the cream of the crop out there right now--True Detective, GoT, etc.--but it is easily one of the best of the rest.
KSB2424 3,083 Posted February 26, 2014 Okay. Well lets make this all about me for just a second. I do not have Netflix, but I do have cable and Amazon Prime. The only shows I am currently watching are The Walking Dead and The Blacklist. The Blacklist is just meh, but the wife likes it okay so its the one show we watch together. Amazon Primes streaming is pretty unspectacular but the two I've been eyeing is Sons of Anarchy, Justified and The Americans. Which goes first? And which out of the three would a 30 something year old woman (my wife) like most, if any?

It has some of the wittiest writing and best characters on TV. I know some women who really love Justified, but I think they are mostly just in it for Olyphant. I watched the first couple season of SOA, but then kind of lost track.

And it is far, far better than The Blacklist. Of the shows mentioned I would go: 1. The Americans 2. Justified 3. SOA
KSB2424 3,083 Posted February 26, 2014 I think I'll start off with the Americans since its just one season on Amazon and then start to DVR the Series tonight and watch that with the wife. Then maybe start Justified as my own little television show. I think there are several (like 4 seasons) of those already. Thanks.

Justified is one fo the best shows on TV -- if youre choosing to start Americans ( whose only watchable aspect seems to be glimes of Keri Russel somewhat nude) over Justified
