Jimmy Johnson ( nascar question ) who will be thought of as the best ever...

Recommended Posts

When JJ call it quits -- JJ or Dale Sr. ? Dale had the ultimate ending I don't think he would of wanted to die any other way than on the last corner / last lap of the Daytona 500. JJ just has been just as if not more dominant in an age with better racers overall and faster cars.

He will have to beat out Richard Petty.

This is the right answer for "How you want to die"

Jeff Gordon

He had to compete against Dale Earnhaid Sr and he still won 4 championships.

He is third on the all-time wins list with 87 career wins and has the most wins in NASCAR's modern era (1972–present). Active iron man leader for consecutive races participated in. In 2009 Gordon became the first NASCAR driver to reach $100 million in career winnings.

I heard Earnhardt Sr. as well he had to race against... :dunno: Fact is there is more competition IMO now then 20 - 30 years ago and just flat out better cars.

Sterling Marlin - unquestionably the best after murdering Dale Earnhardt.

In a coors light car no less.

Take away the stupid "Chase for the Cup" crap, Gordon would have six titles and Jimmie Johnson would have two titles...

If you are really saying Gordon is better than JJ I think only Gordon would agree with you. I will say he had a hell of a start and a 3 year run but faded off some. Gordon is still granted a top 10 all time driver.

ETA the whole chase thing actually makes the "sport" somewhat watchable in doses - and more interesting. w/o it would be like the NFL saying let's not have a playoffs lets just brown the best regular season team champion.

Great driver. Nowhere near the best ever. I am pretty sure that without Chad Knaus, JJ does not own 5 SCs. Without the ill-conceived "chase", he definitely doesn't.

Why does NASCAR have to be like the NFL? They are totally different... The thing about NASCAR that was great was that it rewarded the drivers that were consistently good all year, now you just get to the "chase" and then you just need to get hot for 10 races to win the title... It wouldn't be bad if they wouldn't use the same race tracks year after year in the "chase"...

I don't watch NASCAR any way, so it doesn't matter to me...

if it is a "sport" why not have a playoff system like any other sport?

No but they have 4 majors like Tennis -- Nascar has 1 the Daytona 500 to START the season -- I would be fine with no CHase but make the Daytona 500 at the end and worth a lot more than any other race in regards to points.

Golf and tennis are good analogues, since both are individual sports with lots of events scattered year-round in all kinds of different venues.

Tennis and golf both have official rankings and points systems of various kinds used to determine who the "#1 player in the world" is, and in both sports, neither the fans nor the players really care much.

It's all about who wins the most slams. When your GOAT resume is tallied in either sport, that is the primary thing that matters, and many would say the ONLY thing that matters. Including insider guys who are actual contenders for the title of GOAT in their respective sports, like Tiger and Jack in golf and Sampras in tennis. No offense meant to Federer, but I simply don't know his stance on the subject off hand.

For NASCAR to be able to seriously get into a discussion about who is kicking the most ass in any given year, adopting a similar model to those two sports is probably the way to go. It's not as cut and dried as March Madness, but it's been satisfying fans for a hundred years.

I'm not a NASCAR fan, and I'm not an Indy Car fan, but I watch some of Daytona and Indy every year. They're pretty much the Masters and Wimbledon of their sports. If there were an obvious US Open, I'd probably watch that, too. But there isn't, so...

As it stands now, the NASCAR GOAT is probably just the guy who's won the most Daytona 500's. Whoever that may be. I wanna say Petty, but it'd just be a guess... :dunno:

Fedex Cup? :dunno:

I doubt the golfers strive to win the FedEx Cup at the beginning of the season, their goal is to win one of the four majors...

No argument here. But it is a post-season playoff and it comes with a big payday, which is significant in golf.

Reading these left-turn threads out of boredom got me to thinking... auto racing is a lot like horse racing. They are more team than individual sports. The drivers (jockeys) have athleticism and skill, but put them in a jalopy (nag) and they aren't winning squat. Put them in the fastest car (horse) and their odds significantly increase.

Auto racing is even more of a team sport because of the active participation of the team during the race. A jockey is on his/her own during the actual race. Also given the short career of a race horse, jockeys ride multiple horses over their career, so statistically the cream will rise to the top.

I guess my point is that it seems hard to say any one driver is the GOAT without considering him in the context of his team. :dunno:

One of my biggest problems with taking NECKCAR seriously. The whole notion of 'teams' in what is supposed to be an individual sport is a farce. It puts those with no, or fewer, teammates at a serious disadvantage. Then there was the fiasco a few years ago where Jimmy Johnson stole Jeff Gordon's pit crew down the stretch. It would be like one baseball team 'borrowing' another team's closer for the playoffs. Just a joke of a 'sport'.

LIke others have said - this may be true, but it still does not discredit the fact that the PGA Tour does in fact have a playoff. Players must qualify to be in it, once in they must produce to advance - and at the end the champion wins a cool $10, 000,000.
