IGotWorms 4,059 Posted April 11, 2013 Delivery people Hair stylist Mailman at Christmas Cab drivers Hotel cleaning people Sometimes I tip the counter people at carryout places that have a tip jar. I hate it when they put a tip line on the credit card receipt though, so I never tip that way unless it's a sit-down restaurant. Also I give your mom the tip all the time

nikki2200 4 Posted April 11, 2013 I always struggle with this and never know what I'm supposed to do. Definitely delivery people, taxi drivers, parking dudes, and beauticians (which is a bit weird because my future sister-in-law has been doing my hair and I wonder if it's condescending to tip her). But then it gets sketchy. Like... am I supposed to tip the cat sitter who is working through a service? What about cleaning people? Movers? I had a good one a while ago and I can't remember it now and I was like... are we supposed to tip that guy? Maybe it was the guy who wrapped up our Christmas tree. Are we supposed to tip him? Oh... at the one grocery story I go to they help you bring the groceries to your car. I tried to give the woman a couple of dollars one time and she said no. Then I felt like an ass because I was treating her like a servant or something. So the next time I didn't offer a tip to the girl, and I think she may have been expecting one? I don't know if it was a store policy not to accept tips. The whole thing makes me uncomfortable. I just wish we were more like the rest of the world and people just got paid to do their jobs and it wasn't left on us to figure out when/where it was appropriate to tip and how much. I hired a cat sitter to come to my house for 15 minutes and made sure she had water every other day. I think it cost $9. Just like my future in-laws come over and check on the cat every day or so when we are out of town now. What exactly is bad about that?

KSB2424 3,148 Posted April 11, 2013 Not to sidetrack but what about at buffets? To be honest I rarely eat at buffets but on a recent golf trip to Myrtle Beach we all went to dinner one night at a Captain Georges. Seafood Buffet, nothing like some crap ass buffet like a Golden Corral or Shoneys or something like that. Those places are the suck. But anyway, after we ate a few of us looked at each other and asked? "Are we supposed to tip something?" I mean, the waiter type dude did fill our water/beer/tea/soda's up and brought us clean plates for the buffet but that was it. We didn't order anything to him and served ourselves. Whats the protocol here?

Whats the protocol here? Yes, you tip at buffets: 10-15% depending on quality of service, in contrast to 15-25% at formal restaurants.

While I agree with your last statement, I don't think it is ever "wrong" to tip someone for good service. When people refuse it is usually based on company policy, not being offended. When in doubt, tip well as most of the people you're tipping are less well off financially than you.

That makes sense, we all threw down a few bucks each, so he probably did okay. Maybe a rule of thumb is that normally I tip 20% to a waiter for good service at restaurants. Since a buffet waiter does only half the work cut it in half to 10%. Its easy math that way anyhoo.

They're not getting paid to do a job. You have to pay them in order for them to get paid. They make like $2 an hour or something. I don't agree with the system, but if you don't give them a tip, they are essentially serving you for free.

frank 2,307 Posted April 12, 2013 I'm very sorry the government taxes their tips, that's ###### up. That ain't my fault. Price: $11.59 My tip: $5.00 I may not be as rich as most of you focks, but I tip often and tip hard. I think it's appropriate to tip at least $5 no matter how much the bill is. If you go to a diner or something, those people are working their focking asses off, moreso than in fancy schmancy restaurants and the tabs are really cheap, so I don't think it's really appropriate to tip like $2 because all you got was an order of poppers and a diet coke. They've refilled my soda and water at least 4 times and are running around like maniacs. Ya know?
