About to shut my league down.

Recommended Posts

Well, first, I do NOT like the idea of commish plays for free! Are those duties that extensive? How much is the leauge buy in? Seems almost a Congress-like perk to me.

That said, what does shuting down the league accomplish? You're already in the hole for the $90 website. Turning off the league doesn't get that back and will certainly cease any additional payments as well as cost you any "friends." Are there additional costs beyond the $90? If not, shutting it down does nothing.

If you want, at least, your $90 back, you just have to go forward and keep asking for the money.

This. I don't understand why if the OP clearly stated that the league dues were supposed to be paid up prior to the draft, then how come the draft was held with unpaid owners?

I agree that shutting the league down is not the answer. Otherwise that whole "commish plays for free" perk is thrown out the window & you no longer have the ability to win any money at all.

I'd continue to email/call/text the deadbeat owners for a couple more weeks to hopefully resolve the issue without folding the league. Adverse real life events such as job loss, death or sickness in family, can get in the way of fantasy football. Hopefully this is the issue but it many be.

Also, if I stipulated to the leagues I commish that I wasn't required to pay my league fees, there'd be no league. Does Vegas allow you to place bets without money? Everyone pays to play, that's the deal.

Hopefully you find a fair resolution to your issue RamRock without shutting the league down. Good luck sir!

Since the advent of internet hosting sites, i have never heard of the commish going for free. How do you justify that? I think you should disband the league....and never commish another.

It is not like the old days when the commish had to tally the stats from the newspapers. What exactly is it that you do? - other than a pizz-poor job of collecting the money, including your own?

And yes, I do know what a commissioner does, because I commish 3 leagues myself. But I would never ask for a cent in compensation. And collecting the money is easy...Either everyone pays by LeagueSafe BEFORE the draft or we don't have a league at all. Never had a problem. But then again, I take control of my leagues and the other owners respect that, i guess.

Once again, agree with most everything posters have added to the thread...

I do think, "commish is free"... Is odd, and I personally would not participate for that reason alone.

As others have suggested, give one final deadline. If the majority have not paid, kill the league and refund the few that have paid. You have to do this, otherwise you will be pulling teeth the rest of the season and more importantly, set a precedent for all future leagues. If I was one of the few that have paid, I would be furious at this point. I don't care if buy-in was $20 and 0-2. It's principle.

With that said, Im about to hit you with some tough love here...

Based on what you have told us, it appears that you do lack experience, and management skills. The situation is the way it is because you have let it become that way. You have failed, as a fantasy league Commissioner. Hopefully you will take what you have learned, and move on. As always, Good Luck in your future endeavors.

In all fairness I realize this will not be the most popular thing to do , but this league needs to be discontinued . !2 team league . I won't honestly say that the people in our are my friends , two maybe three are actual friends. With that being said here is the actual breakdown of the payments that were made on draft day.

2 - paid in full (one is my son)

1 -paid a third

1 - paid two thirds

Commish is free

I'm already in the hole for the $90 for the website.

And just in case anyone is wondering I'm 1-1. My record isn't a factor.

7 players have not even paid a dime. Yeh 7 , I have posted on our message board and have also sent out emails. NOT ONE RESPONSE! I have no other option than to just shut the league down. Agree or disagree or suggestions anyone.

Tks Ramrock

What my Commish does, he collects the money 2 weeks before the draft. If any team doesn't pay by the deadline, he scouts for another team. If any team has not paid, then there is no draft until EVERY team has paid. He learned by getting burnt in the past my certain owners not paying.

I'm not sure why anyone really cares that the commish of this league plays for free, unless you're actually in the league... :dunno:

I commish 1 league and I pay to play. I wouldn't play in a league that the commish plays for free, unless he's paying for something else. Either way, I don't give a fock about how this league is run.

As for how to handle this situation. Most haven't paid...Some have made partial payments...Sounds like you have some cheap ba$tards in the league. The way I see it, your options are:

1) Give a date that payment is needed by, or you're going to either shut it down or give money back and it'll just be a free league.

2) Reduce the buy-in so the cheap ba$tards can afford it, but then see #1.

3) Shut it down and tell everyone to get a job.

Speaking as the commish of my main league that's going on 11 years now, I know how frustrating it can be trying to collect league fees and, even worse, people's transaction fees post-season. That said, I've conditioned our league well to the point that everyone's entry fee is due by draft day (at the latest), or they don't play. This works out well because our league still has 90% of the original members so no one wants to lose their spot as demand to get in the league is very high. Transaction fees have even become easy to collect through requiring people to have PayPal (how people don't have PayPal in this day and age is mindboggling).

As to your situation, it's a shame given the league's age but there's no way I would put up with the annoyance and/or stress of having to deal with grown ass men who can't pay their entry dues timely. Deadbeat POS's.

I give guys up until the playoffs start to pay. If you didn't pay you get bounced out of the league and the next team in the standings takes the spot. This works in my situation because we are all friends and no one is a d-bag, although that being said, one time a good buddy of mine didnt pay so I booted his a$$ out for a year. With your situation I'd give it a few more weeks and revisit the shutdown option at that time. Hopefully everybody or most guys will pay and it'll be a moot point. Also we stopped paying for FF sites years ago - takes too much of a bite out of the league budget and prize funds...

We stopped collecting money at the draft years ago, as maybe half the guys would pay then. Everyone would be paid up by the end of the season. Now we just wait til the season's over. The Commish tells everyone who owes what to whom, and within a couple of weeks, maybe a month if a couple guys are dragging their feet, the winners are paid, and everyone's happy.

I don't understand how you can be in a 20 year league and only a couple of the guys are friends. :dunno:

Clearly stated in league rules , payment needs to be made on Draft day

If this is the case, but 1 or 2 don't pay each year until later on, then I'm not surprised many are not now paying.

Why should they? You've set the precedent to not enforce the rules.

15 year league, we pay weekly winners, division and super bowl at the end of the year, $300 buy in. No need to pay right away. Seems an easier way to do things.

It's "an idiot", and you're missing some punctuation in there too. If you're gonna call someone stupid you might want to use proper grammar.

Just STFU if you have nothing worth while to contribute. Damn, some people never grow up.

As to the original post, send an email to the entire league and set a deadline. In that email, let them know if they don't pay up, you're shutting it down.

Hire a collector to get all the fees. You no pay by tomorrow? You get broken finger.

The guy has to be pretty big, mean, and swift.

Good luck, I'm rooting for you.

I'd agree.

If going to a draft, you should have cash in hand, or be prepared to make arrangements to pay within a reasonable time frame at a time that is convenient and agreeable for the commish.

otherwise you should not be at the draft table.
