Let's Meet John Kasich

Recommended Posts

I tried to find the most non-partisan site I could. PBS will have to do.

http://www.pbs.org/newshour/updates/john-kasich-believe-candidate-stands-10-issues/

He is the grandson of coal miners and immigrants and a prodigy politician who talked his way into a meeting with then-President Richard Nixon at age 18 and won his first election at age 24 (state senate). John Kasich spent nearly two decades in Congress and won re-election as Ohio governor by a whopping 30 points last year. He helped write the country’s first balanced budget in decades (1997), worked as a television contributor for Fox, wrote three New York Times bestsellers and once was kicked out of a Grateful Dead concert for trying to get on stage.

Okay so the first paragraph is giving me warm and fuzzies. Especially the parts in bold.

Climate Change: Climate change is real. The EPA should not regulate emissions.

In 2012, Kasich said he believes climate change is real and is a problem. In the same speech, the Republican asserted that the Environmental Protection Agency should not regulate emissions, but that states and private companies should work to contain carbon output from coal-burning power plants. The Ohio governor indicated this year that he is concerned about protecting jobs while protecting the environment.

Bingo. Climate Change is real, but we don't know how much 'man' is actually doing it. And while the obvious of trying to be as 'clean' as we can is a good thing, we have to balance the economy and jobs with any environmental decision.

Criminal Justice: Less prison time for nonviolent offenders. Focus on rehabilitation and treatment.

Prison and criminal justice reform have both been themes for Kasich as Ohio governor. This includes a 2012 bill making iteasier for ex-felons to get work and a 2011 bill that favors rehabilitation over prison for people convicted of nonviolent crimes. The Republican candidate has sharply criticized prisons as holding too many people who are mentally ill and advocates increased treatment for mental disorders.

Sounds good to me. We need to treat the mentally ill and the dug addicted. And we need to harsly incarcerate the violent offenders. I'm on board here too. So far we are 2 for 2.

Education: Continue Common Core. Cut education spending.

The Ohio governor has defended the Common Core education standards written by state education superintendents and local principals and has criticized its opponents as politically-motivated. Kasich has long pushed ideas for education reform, including promotion of occupational choices earlier starting in elementary school and a plan to dramatically overhaul funding formulas to give poor districts and charter schools more resources. In crafting his state’s budget, Kasich used his veto power to cut more than $84 million of funding from public schools.

Hmmmm. Not sure about this one. I'd like to know more about why he thinks cutting spending on education is a good thing. Eduction is the key to most everything in my opinion. It's number two on the gov't "to do" list behind defend the homeland in my opinion.

Immigration: Allow undocumented immigrants to stay in the country legally. A path to citizenship is not preferable but may be part of compromise.

It will cost to much money and we will be drowing in litigation if we try to deport everybody here illegally. We need a path to citizenship, AND stronger borders / a wall for the future. Kasich speaks to half of this. Another Push.

Obamacare: Keep the federal Medicaid expansion. Repeal and replace the rest of the Affordable Healthcare Act.

As governor, Kasich adopted the Medicaid expansion offered by the Affordable Care Act and pointed to Ronald Reagan’s expansion of Medicaid to defend his decision. The Ohio Republican has called for the rest of Obamacare to be repealed and replaced. In late 2014, the Associated Press reported comments that indicated Kasich believed the law was unlikely to be repealed. The governor’s staff asked for a correction.

Another Push. Not sure how I feel here.....need more info.

Social issues: It’s time to move on from the same-sex marriage debate. Ban abortions after 20 weeks, with an exception if the life of the mother is in danger.

Following the June Supreme Court ruling upholding same-sex marriage across the country, Kasich told CBS’ Face the Nation, that he believes in traditional marriage but “the court has ruled and it’s time to move on.

Kasich is a firm abortion opponent. In June 2013 the Ohio governor signed into law a bill to ban most abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, allowing an exception only if the life of the mother is in danger. The same legislation cut funding to Planned Parenthood and also required women to undergo an ultrasoundbefore getting an abortion. In 2015, Kasich indicated he was uncomfortable with a proposal that would have banned abortions as early as six weeks.

Absolutely Perfectly aligns with what I believe. 1. It's time to move on from same sex marraige. Once the gov't got involved, it was inevitable. 2. Abortion is here to stay, BUT should be strictly regulated. A 20 week mark is more than enough and a good and smart compromise. 3. Planned Parenthood can survive just fine on its own accord without federal funding. Kasich hits a home run here.

Taxes: Cut income and corporate taxes. Close some loopholes. Raise other taxes, including a state tax on fracking.

Another Push or N/A. I need to know more about his tax plans.

Unions and workers: Limit union powers, especially for public employees.

During his first year as governor, Kasich pushed for a bill that would curb collective-bargaining for public employees. Ohio voters rejected the idea in a state referendum and Kasich has not returned to it.

Sounds fine to me. Unions once had their place, bu they (generally speaking) do more harm than good these days.

Iran and Israel: Iran deal raises concerns.

Following the announcement of the proposed nuclear deal between Iran, the U.S. and multiple other countries, a Kasich spokesman told reporters that the governor was concerned about the proposal. The Republican candidate attended Netanyahu’s speech to Congress and said the U.S. should not pressure Israel into peace negotiations.

A very safe and vanilla stance. But I feel the same way.

Islamic State and Iraq: Put U.S. boots on the ground to fight ISIS.

Kasich believes that in order to defeat ISIS, the U.S.will eventually have to put combat troops on the ground. In addition, the Midwestern governor has called for a better international plan to battle the group.

Another Push. I think eventually we'll have to do this as well. Ignoring it like we have been won't work. The world is to small in 2015 and beyond and the crazies are even more crazy. The bolded I really like. If the US can be a strong leader in bringing the world together against these fools that is the best way possible.

All in All, I'm firmly on the bandwagon. Seems like a reasonable dude, with lots of experience.

He's actually one of my favorites on the Republican side. I'd need to know why and how he expects to cut education spending. Also, if he wants to repeal the Healthcare Act, I need to know what that would mean for the 16 million who now have health insurance because of it. If he wants to take things back to the way they were before ACA and just hide his head in the sand and pretend things are fine, then I'd never vote for him.

I like him. Republican and conservative for sure, but he's pretty moderate and reasonable in his views. Strike you as the kind of guy who is willing to change his stance if its proven wrong. Also I think he would attempt to be the entire country's president rather than doing something like just writing off half the nation as loser welfare leeches who can never be helped

All in on Kasich. Absolutely and with great enthusiasm. I use to be a Republican explicitly because of deficit hawks like him. Back before Dubya/Cheney when the party use to care about fiscal responsibility. Balancing the budget has always been and remains my top issue since High School. It's been a lifelong obsession, So I'm very well aware of Kasich from his time as budget chairman in the House. Deficit issues are also why I liked Newt so much four years ago, well, Kasich is even better than Newt. For all the nice things I've said about Bill Clinton, in fact it was always Gingrich/Dole that I agreed with during their budget fights. It was Kasich behind the scenes with the pencil, paper, calculator and an enormous stacks of budget printouts doing all the nuts and bolts work, going line by line over the entire budget, arguing with his Dem counterpart to make it actually balance. I trust him more than any other person in America on this, my top issue.

I still like Lincoln Chafee as my #1 because his foreign policy is so much better than Kasich's, but let's face it, he's not going anywhere. Of the rest, Kasich is way ahead of anyone.

I'll take credit for bringing him to your attention early. This dude is exactly. .EXACTLY. .what this country needs right now. Plus he can win because he attracts independents.

I pray that he lasts and doesn't go full right-wing retard to appease the Republican base.

Kasich is the real deal.

Glad this guy is polling very low, no focking way in hell do I want this guy to even sniff the ticket.

There is a reason the liberals love him, he loves taxes, obamacare, and probably would give amnesty to the illegals.

He better not win the nomination.

What type of health insurance do you and your kid have? You don't work, so I'm assuming you either have no insurance or some form of Medicaid?

Yah, I've tried to understand his position several times, but he's never taken up the task.

All I know is he has an obamaphone, but hates Obama. He's on some sort of disability, but hates liberal moochers.

Even on social media sites, I find that the loudest right wing political ramblers are all of my poorest and least educated friends. The UPS truck driver, roofer, guy who is constantly starting some crappy new business and lives at home (with his son that he gets food stamps for). It really is this strange paradox I will probably never understand.

Dear gocolts,

Some people are just tired of all the rhetoric and fighting. Much like Ronald Reagan was able to do, we need a President in 2016 who can bring people together, not further divide. You may not agree with his stance on ALL things, but that's okay. He is a Republican, he has Conservative ideals, but at the end of the day he is a realist. He understands to get things done, in a positive way, you have to listen to others. You have to be conscious and compassionate to different views and all people. A person like that is able to gain compromise and get things accomplished for the betterment of the whole. And because his basic ideals run in line with Republicans and Conservatives, the ship will be guided that way....even if only small increments at a time. John Kasich is exactly what this country needs...a person that talks to us...not at us.

Warmest Regards,

KSB

I am from Ohio. While he may not be a perfect poltician, who is? They all have there views and cannot please everyone.

Kasich has done wonders in Buckeye country. No flash, but the guy understands what is needed. I wish the rest of the country would dig into what this guy is all about and his record.

If you want the country to move in a positive direction, he could be the guy.

We may be missing a great opportunity if we let this guy go without giving him a chance.

He is what we need.

The kind of conservative that you want as President would never get elected, Gary.

Kasich has the experience and temperament for the job, more so than any candidate in the race.

Sux is one of the loudest conservative blowhards on the site and he milked unemployment the full 99 weeks before getting off his lazy ass to get a job. He's mooched more than I have in my entire lifetime but I'm a liberal, so I'm all for handouts.

What I don't understand and my paradox with this mindset and statement is that why wouldn't Sux (or anyone) NOT use a government entitlement or tax break if it is available to them?

Just because you disagree with a law doesn't mean you wouldn't abide by it. I may think that the speed limit in my town needs to be 35mph. But if it's 55mph I am still going to drive 55mph as that's the law. I may think the mortgage tax deduction is bad policy, but if its there, You bet I will deduct my interest on my mortgage on my taxes. Just because you think another system or way is better doesn't mean you don't abide by or live by the existing rules, laws and entitlements of the land.

I feel unemployment benefits are a fallback to be able to feed your family and keep your house if you should lose a job. Money is taken out of your paycheck and I have no problem with anyone collecting unemployment.

Sux admitted that he got lazy and milked it for as long as he possibly could before taking a job. He started a thread about it. THAT is the exact thing conservatives b1tch and moan about every day. People looking for a free ride. Entitlements. Sucking off the government teat. All big, overused sayings the right loves to throw around. Until it's them that has the opportunity for a free ride./

Technically, staying on unemployment for 99 weeks because you can isn't cheating the system, it's just being an assh0le. And if this is the kind of assh0le you are, don't get on the cases of others who also knowingly milk the system.

You want 99 weeks of sitting on your ass? Go ahead. But that's two years you didn't make any real money. Two years you didn't pay down a mortgage, pay in to a 401k or anything meaningful. And it probably assures me that you won't be able to afford to be where I am or going, and that's good, because I don't like quitters or losers. Have at it.

it was at a time when jobs weren't easy to get so his laziness let someone who actually wanted to work get a job. It's that way all the time, that's why guys dome guys always seem to be out of work. Fine by me, that's more jobs for people who have drive and want to succeed and support their families. I just get a kick out of republicans who whine about liberals wanting hand outs, while they sit on their ass with their hands out.

I do not believe that for even a second. Hell, he has used obamacare to expand medicaid in his state BIG TIME. So that tells me he will buckle on it, just like most folks in the GOP

KSB

Yet here you are, wanting and pining for more of the same, establishment republicans that are too scared of being blamed or called a racist to do the right thing.

We do not need some guy to get into the White House that is going to cave every chance he gets. I understand I am not going to agree with anyone 100% or even close, but some things are just too important. I have one concern, my son. He has to grow up and live in this country.

I, like many others, are focking sick and tired of this constant BS. All you have to do is look at the polls to see this. Guys bucking the system are on top.

Now, I also understand that will not last. I am sure the establishment will shut them all out at some point. But holy fock man, we MUST get a true conservative in there this time. It is detrimental and this guy is not it, not by a long shot. He better than focking Jeb, I will give him that, but that is as far as I will go at this point. Seen way too much stuff about this guy that scares the hell out of me. Just look at the liberals in this thread, they love this guy. THat should tell you all you need to know.

No?

He blew up the deficit.

He expanded medicaid.

He bailed out social security.

He gave amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants.

The size of government grew quite a bit under his presidency, yet alone when he was governor of California.

You would hate that man as much as you hate Obummer.
