RaiderHaters Revenge 4,286 Posted June 1, 2018 36.07 Noah Webster - Wildcard This guy is really hard to put down to a category. Non-Fiction writer, congressman, educator, reformer, inventor. I think a true steal at this stage of the draft. Author of the second most reprinted book in US history Noah Webster Jr. (October 16, 1758 – May 28, 1843) was an American lexicographer, textbook pioneer, English-language spelling reformer, political writer, editor, and prolific author. He has been called the "Father of American Scholarship and Education". His blue-backed speller books taught five generations of American children how to spell and read. Webster's name has become synonymous with "dictionary" in the United States, especially the modern Merriam-Webster dictionary that was first published in 1828 as An American Dictionary of the English Language. Webster lacked career plans after graduating from Yale in 1778, later writing that a liberal arts education "disqualifies a man for business".[11] He taught school briefly in Glastonbury, but the working conditions were harsh and the pay low. He quit to study law.[12] While studying law under future U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice Oliver Ellsworth, Webster also taught full-time in Hartford—which was grueling, and ultimately impossible to continue.[13]He quit his legal studies for a year and lapsed into a depression; he then found another practicing attorney to tutor him, and completed his studies and passed the bar examination in 1781.[14] As the Revolutionary War was still going on, he could not find work as a lawyer. He received a master's degree from Yale by giving an oral dissertation to the Yale graduating class. Later that year, he opened a small private school in western Connecticut that was a success. Nevertheless, he soon closed it and left town, probably because of a failed romance.[15] Turning to literary work as a way to overcome his losses and channel his ambitions,[16] he began writing a series of well-received articles for a prominent New England newspaper justifying and praising the American Revolution and arguing that the separation from Britain was permanent.[17] He then founded a private school catering to wealthy parents in Goshen, New York and, by 1785, he had written his speller, a grammar book and a reader for elementary schools.[18] Proceeds from continuing sales of the popular blue-backed speller enabled Webster to spend many years working on his famous dictionary.[19] Such a smart man from that time, something everyone can learn from (bolded) His big break Webster married well and had joined the elite in Hartford but did not have much money. In 1793, Alexander Hamilton lent him $1,500 to move to New York City to edit the leading Federalist Partynewspaper. In December, he founded New York's first daily newspaper American Minerva (later known as the Commercial Advertiser), which he edited for four years, writing the equivalent of 20 volumes of articles and editorials. He also published the semi-weekly publication The Herald, A Gazette for the country (later known as The New York Spectator). Some of the best work ever written was the Federalist Papers, basically an in depth look inside the Constitution
vuduchile 1,945 Posted June 1, 2018 In hindsight I should have done anything to attend one of the games. Back then my main FF league had a "supplemental" draft mid season. We did it at a wing place when Byung Yung Kim blew one of his 543245 saves vs. the Yankees. My best friend in the league is/was a Yanks fan and I had to sit there listening to him talk trash while we drafted mostly worthless players. It was sort of a fluke that I got to go. We lived in CT at the time and my ex wife worked with a guy who sold us tickets to an ALCS and a WS game at face value.
Voltaire 5,276 Posted June 1, 2018 Does Robert de La Salle work for you guys? He's explored and set up forts at critical junctures all through the Great Lakes and up and down the Mississippi, spent 21 years on the continent and died in what would later become Huntsville, Texas. Why I highlight the pick for possible controversy is that he did this however in the service of France in direct opposition to the interests of British Colonial America. Voltaire 5,276 Posted June 1, 2018 I like the foreigners that made impact idea. I do too. It may be late to set it up or no? If we were to set up some new categories, mid-draft I would expect unanimous consent. One 'no' vote kills the idea. We could make others at the same time ... something for military prowess. While we're at it some category for military prowess besides general such that it would encompass 90sbaby's 442nd and free up vudu's Audie Murphy pic. I love, love, love the Audie Murphy selection but can't honestly advise vudu where to put it. "Foreigners who contributed" and "Heroes" Anything else? Feel free to anyone to say "no." RaiderHaters Revenge 4,286 Posted June 1, 2018 37.2 Barry Bishop - Explorer Bishop's work on shear moraines brought him to the attention of Sir Edmund Hillary, who invited him to join the Himalayan Scientific and Mountaineering Expedition of 1960–1961,[1] where he served as the expedition's official glaciologist and climatologist.[2] Though he was not sponsored by National Geographic on the trip, his photographic, scientific, and mountaineering accomplishments cemented his career with the Society. With fellow expedition members Mike Gill, Mike Ward and Wally Romanes, Bishop made the landmark first ascent of Ama Dablam, which was also the first winter ascent in the Himalayas.[1][6] was an American mountaineer, scientist, photographer and scholar. With teammates Jim Whittaker, Lute Jerstad, Willi Unsoeld and Tom Hornbein, he was a member of the first American team to summit Mount Everest on May 22, 1963

vuduchile 1,945 Posted June 1, 2018 Foreigners who contributed could open a can of worms at this point. I had had Tim Berners Lee at one point, not bothering to check to see if he was ever a citizen. If this category is opened up, Id definitely want that pick reinstated. Heroes could be good. Or maybe badasses.
titans&bucs&bearsohmy! 2,745 Posted June 1, 2018 Why dont we just say the wildcard category can include foreigners? That might be better than making a new category 30+ rounds in.

Voltaire 5,276 Posted June 1, 2018 To do it, I'd want all eight thumbs up on new categories. Each of us has a veto. And if so, the status of de la Salle, de Soto, Lee, and 442nd would have to be discussed. I wasn't Nostradamus. When I set this up, I just kind of pulled categories out of my ass. Now we're seeing better how stuff fell through the cracks. I had done this once before with the world history draft, but the 'who qualified' question then involved ancient legendary figures who may or may not have been real, rather than passports. Voltaire 5,276 Posted June 1, 2018 watch the trailer for Hotel Artemis. That will break you of it Well, amazingly you're right. Age has caught up sadly. This isn't the clip that you'd recommended, I just wanted to use it to point out that nothing she can do turns me off. Jodie Foster is still so sexy flailing around like that speaking jibberish, wearing rags, and without makeup. I'd still be willing to put up with both the lesbianism and the crazy in an effort to cure Nell. To me, i's impossible to un-sexy Jodie Foster.
